What CBC boys say about the Kiwirrkurra Immersion ...
Ari Brierley Figueiredo Year 11
Matthew Read Year 11
Taj Ryan Year 11
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? One night when we were making dinner, I went outside and saw there was a group of about 30 kids, so I got the other CBC boys and we hung out with them for a bit. We hung out with them during the day as well, but it was nice to have that time with them.
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? Being out in the bush with the kids, learning about their culture while we hunted for witchetty grubs and goannas.
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? When we said goodbye, because I didn’t know if it was going to be my last time seeing them. There was a lot of emotion, and some of the kids starting crying. It was really great to see that they loved having us there.
How has the Immersion changed you? It gave me a better perspective on life, it showed me what’s really important. Even though they don’t have a lot by our standards, they’re happy all the time, and I think I learnt a lot from them. What surprised you most while you were in the community? That some of the kids remembered me [from last year’s Immersion]. I wasn’t too sure if they would, so it was really nice when they did. Page 8 | CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 1 Term 3
How has the Immersion changed you? It’s helped me appreciate a different side of Aboriginal culture than we normally see. What surprised you most while you were in the community? How open everyone was, how they accepted us and how kind they always were.
How has the Immersion changed you? I found out about the kind of person I can be, and how much enjoyment I get out of helping other people. What surprised you most while you were in the community? How happy the kids are. There’s not much there, but they’re always happy and finding something to do and having fun.
Brady Santaromita Year 11
Liam Solar Year 11
Ben Funga Year 11
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? Hunting with the elders and the kids. It was great, digging for witchetty grubs and searching for goanna.
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? Going into their houses and experiencing where they live. It shocked me a bit, because it’s so different to how we live.
What’s one moment from Kiwirrkurra that you’ll never forget? When we were leaving, one of the kids started to cry, and it really hit me just how much of an impact we’d had on them, and how much of an impact they had on us.
How has the Immersion changed you? I learnt a lot from the kids. They want to get really involved with you, and want to know about you, and you want to know about them. What surprised you most while you were in the community? How many people there were. The town’s population is about 150 people, and there are only 30 houses.
How has the Immersion changed you? I learnt a lot about working with other people, and it opened my eyes to how important family is in Aboriginal culture. What surprised you most while you were in the community? The way the kids came up to us on the first day. I thought they would be really shy, but they were very warm and welcoming.
How has the Immersion changed you? A big insight into how they live, and their culture. It really changed my perception of Indigenous Australians. What surprised you most while you were in the community? How they live. They have houses, but they do things like get rid of the doors to keep the space more open, so that people can come and stay whenever they want.

Achievements Congratulations to Luke Mertens (Year 12) who has been selected to represent Western Australia in the 2017 Cross Country team. Luke will be competing at the School Sport Australia National Championships in Hobart from 10 August to 14 August. Well done, Luke, and good luck!
Help save three lives! This week I was so proud of four of our Year 12 students, Matthew Lomma, Fraser Russell, Harry Kalogirou and Alexander Stapleton, who joined me in donating blood for the first time at the South Fremantle Donor Centre. Ned Marshall also attended but plans to donate on our next visit. Each person gave a single unit of blood (470mL), which is less than 10% of your total blood volume! We are a registered Red25 group (Christian Brothers College Fremantle) and encourage all members of our community to join our group at their next donation. Students who are 16 years and older are eligible to donate once a year, until they reach the age of 18. Our next group donation will occur in two weeks and I look forward to having more students and staff brave their fear of needles to save three lives. It’s important for fathers to distinguish between their parenting role and their relationship break-up. This seminar, held in a male-friendly environment, suggests helpful ways to keep in touch with your child to build skills and to recognise strengths and challenges. Stepfamilies present a whole array of challenges that are different to those found in a biological family. This workshop is based on research that highlights some of the more helpful ways of forming and living in this new family. This workshop is a taster for our longer stepfamily courses.

Every parent wants to do the best for their child but can often feel overwhelmed. After many decades of research it has been found that one of the most useful skills and awareness a parent can give is emotional intelligence. This means helping their child to recognise what they are feeling and why. This short course explores the most helpful way of responding to a child to help them to learn how to regulate their own emotions.
Find out how to build a rewarding father-daughter relationship. As the primary male role model in a girl’s life, Dads play an important role in the development of their selfconcept and self-esteem. This can often affect how their daughters relate to others, particularly to boys and men. This course is designed to help parents develop emotional intelligence in their child and learn the art of emotion coaching. This evidence-based program teaches coaching skills to help parents recognise, understand and manage their own and their children’s emotions during difficult times. Parent Child Connection for DADS Being a parent can be tough. People with primary school children are invited to this four week course to learn new skills, feel better about their parenting and gain confidence.
Making Stepfamilies Work Find out how to build the enduring, resilient stepfamily you both want. The course offers strategies on communication, discipline and managing competing demands.
