Melanie and Louie Lee are understatedly a celebrity force in Castle Rock. They know every street route and alleyway, hidden gem, new development, and historic landmark. As the Lee Team, this dynamic duo has stellar expertise on all local – and mountain – real estate needs.

Hailing from the proud state of Kentucky and its namesake University of Kentucky, Melanie and Louie began their real estate path through appraisals and insurance, respectively. Louie’s involvement in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes really set him on a strategic real estate path. He had the good fortune of being mentored by John Bandimere, Joe Coors, Paul Lewan -- entrepreneurs of integrity and grit. “These wonderful businessmen taught me what true servant leadership means,” Louie shares. “Your reputation is your livelihood. You have to develop a work ethic and characteristics of treating others the way you would like to be treated. Learn to put yourself in others’ shoes so you can do your very best to help serve them.” After moving to Denver in 1990, Louie worked for various builders and ultimately landed in The Village at Castle Pines as an owner of a Coldwell Banker independent brokerage. From the beginning, Louie’s focus was crafting his expertise in South Denver and Douglas County. “From the moment I met with Chris Mygatt, Senior Vice President, Core Four Engagement Leader, I knew I found a business mentor that would help me grow personally and professionally. Tammy Miller, Regional VP of Colorado, helped me create a comprehensive business plan that I continue to use to this day. My current Managing Broker, Karen Ricci, is like a sister to me. She gives me daily encouragement, shares her wisdom, and makes me laugh when I need it,” Louie shares. Melanie continued to focus on appraisals as a Certified Residential Appraiser until getting her broker’s license in 2004. Louie and Melanie joined forces in 2011 forming the Lee Team within

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Melanie’s focus remains in the local area as well as business in the mountains with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties in Vail. Her prowess in Eagle County helps many of the team’s Denver area and Douglas County clients with their mountain homes, and her appraisal background offers clients another opinion on their home value. This unique niche provides a priceless asset to the company and the people who hire them. Melanie sings her father’s praises in teaching her a hard work ethic. He was a dentist who was dedicated to serving his patients with personal attention. Watching successful women in real estate also inspired her to work hard and push towards success. “This is not an easy business and when women can juggle the demands of a family and the home and the demands of a successful career…it takes real dedication and organization to make it all work.” Success is not something Melanie nor Louie tout much. In fact, they didn’t even track their career volume until 2013. (Since then, they have generated $328 million.) Yet they consistently rank in the top 3 for Coldwell Banker, averaging $40 million per year. In 2020, the Lee Team was recognized as Coldwell Banker’s #1 Small Team with 85 units and $84 million in sales as well as making it into the 2020 International Society of Excellence. “The last 10 years, having Melanie join me full time has been a wonderful experience for us both personally and professionally. She brings a skill set that we do not see on the sales side of the business. We are also lucky to have an incredible assistant, Ashley Lenihan, who is truly the third leg of our team,” Louie says. While success seems to come naturally to the Lees, they choose to promote their community rather than themselves. The independent small businesses, charities, and local restaurants that make the greater Castle Rock area special, charming and thriving are where the Lees concentrate

their attention. Melanie and Louie have a monthly ad in Castle Rock Lifestyle Magazine. Rather than promoting listings or their team’s skills, they highlight community leaders and promote area small businesses in their monthly Lee Team Business Highlight. “We have something we call the Making a Difference page that goes behind the scenes and highlights area businesses. The people and businesses in this community are what make it unique and special. This past year has been particularly brutal for our area merchants. We want to give them a platform to share their passions and encourage others to support them. We feel it is our responsibility to make sure they weather this crazy storm,” shares Louie.

For the past 22 years, he has organized an annual golf tournament in a Ryder-Cup style format of Colorado vs. Texas men for charity. Now that their kids are grown, he is back to focusing on his competitive game, aiming to qualify for a national senior event in the near future. Melanie also loves sports. She enjoyed watching her kids’ sporting events as they were growing up and is finding the time to get back on the tennis court. She and Louie loved to travel around the country watching their kids play. Under Louie’s encouragement, Melanie is also learning how to play golf. Logan and Lexie are the Lee’s pride and joy. Logan, 22, is in the Air National Guard. He attends Metro

YOUR REPUTATION IS YOUR LIVELIHOOD. YOU HAVE TO DEVELOP A WORK ETHIC AND CHARACTERISTICS OF TREATING OTHERS THE WAY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED. LEARN TO PUT YOURSELF IN OTHERS’ SHOES SO YOU CAN DO YOUR VERY BEST TO HELP SERVE THEM.

Melanie and Louie extend their philanthropy by actively supporting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes along with Groundwire Christian Ministry and several homeless ministries. And when time allows, Louie hits the golf course. In fact, he has a pretty incredible history with the game. In the 1980s, Louie played in the Tournament of America’s golf tournament, representing the United States in Quito, Ecuador. Full of nervous energy, he hopped on a plane to Miami without a passport or birth certificate in hand. Luckily by the time he touched down, his good friend, Hall of Fame baseball player and state senator Jim Bunning, cleared the way for Louie to get an emergency passport and make the tournament! Louie played competitively for years before his kids were born, including in the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

State University for Aviation and is in flight school at Centennial Airport working toward his professional pilot’s license. Lexie, 19, attends the University of Kansas. Together the Lee family enjoys doing charity work, traveling, and joining Louie on golf outings. “Success to me is not a focus on business,” shares Louie. “It means I have a wife of 30 years and two healthy kids who have grown into compassionate young adults and are pursuing their dreams. Success means Melanie and I have been able to walk alongside family and friends and encourage them through life’s challenges. Success means people trust us enough to guide them with their real estate investment.” A fine summation of success indeed.

Piper KNOLL By Chris Menezes Photos by Merne Judson

Growing up with a single father and alcoholic mother who constantly battled to stay sober, Piper Knoll’s view of “success” was the ability to buy a bag of crunchy Cheetos, eat only the skinny ones and throw out the fat ones – without the guilt of wasting food or money.

at the CU campus for a few years,” Piper explains. “It was a struggle, but I gained a deep understanding that if you work hard, you can overcome hardship and thrive. My dad showed me that betting on yourself was the best bet you could make.” “Everyone knows the scrawny Cheetos are better!” Piper says. Of course, success looks much different to Piper now, but back as an underdog in northern Colorado with little means or opportunity, it was all about the Cheeto. Piper dreamed of the day she could be picky with her favorite coveted snack. Although she always had a burning desire to do more with her life, she didn’t have many examples of what that might look like. There was one thing she did have, however – the example of a strong work ethic. “I watched my dad work multiple jobs at times to provide for me and my sister. He even had a paper route

24 • June 2021

Piper always excelled at sales, and in her late teens, she decided to move to Denver for a commission sales position selling shoes. One day a successful insurance agent approached Piper looking for shoes for an awards event. They struck up a conversation, and after a few minutes, Piper had an interview for a position in her agency. The fancy stiletto heels were a bust, but they earned Piper a job selling insurance. While Piper really enjoyed selling insurance, there was always a hunger for more. One day in 2001, one of Piper’s insurance clients (who happened to be a contractor) invited her to the Parade of Homes, where she just fell in love with houses and began to dream of a future in real estate. She made the plunge in 2005.

As she built her business over the next few years, she saw much success and challenge. Eventually, she realized she could offer more to her clients by being a part of a team. So, in 2011, she joined The Knoll Team, where she has led the charge as a top producing agent and team lead, helping to perfect the team’s systems and processes over the years. “I’m lucky to be the Team Lead of The Knoll Team, which started years before I came on the scene by my amazing husband and his mom,” says Piper. “We have been able to grow the team with several amazing agents including Richie Averill, John Chapman, and of course, my husband, Justin Knoll, and mother-in-law, Pam Meier. We also have two amazing support team members.” In addition to being a top producer, Piper is heavily involved with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and serves as a director, a President’s Circle Major Investor, and was the 2020 chair of the Young

Professional Network Advisory Board, among other formative roles. Piper’s path in leadership has not only allowed her to sharpen her real estate skills by networking with some of the best leaders in the business, but it has also helped her build a business that is 100% sphere and referral-based. Last year, The Knoll Team was able to help over 60 families attain their real estate goals, and they closed almost $28 million in sales volume.

Piper is deeply passionate about supporting families and children in need. Among the organizations she supports is A Precious Child, a local organization that gives families needing a hand resources like school supplies, clothing, and baby essentials. She also supports the Cherry Creek School Foundation, which offers a wide variety of programs to the district and emergency relief to families in the community.

“Volunteer leadership is so important to me. Real Estate has given me abundant opportunity, and it is critical that I give back to this industry and help raise the bar of professionalism,” Piper says.

Piper’s ultimate passion, however, is being a mother to her two daughters, Eden and Macie. Eden will be off to college in the fall and Macie is very involved in Karate, which Piper just recently began doing as well.

Piper picked up golf just last year and is working hard on her game in her downtime. She and Justin are huge baseball fans and season ticket holders to the Colorado Rockies. “I fell in love with Justin and baseball at the same time, so it was very fitting for us to get married on home plate at Coors Field!” While Piper still enjoys crunching on a scrawny Cheeto every now and then, she views success much differently now. “Success to me is creating a life that I am proud of, setting a great example for my daughters, and being able to support causes that I am passionate about. Oh, and my husband loves the fat Cheetos, so I get my scrawny ones without waste. It’s perfect!”

Volunteer leadership is so important to me. Real Estate has given me abundant opportunity, and it is critical that I give back to this industry and help raise the bar of professionalism.

Photos by Merne Judson

It is no secret COVID-19 has changed life as we know it. A lucky few have used this transformative year to tap their creative spark and launch new endeavors to feed their souls. Laura and Frank Melish are among those who have found the silver lining and discovered a new calling. Introducing…Blue Moon Estate Sales – Southeast Denver. Tapping Frank’s passion for treasure hunting and Laura’s expertise in customer service, the couple launched a franchise of the successful company based out of their country home in Elizabeth, Colorado. The Blue Family started Blue Moon Estate Sales in North Carolina in 2009. Laura and Frank were immediately drawn to the company’s recipe for success and were searching for a way to help Colorado families. They are pleased to offer stellar assistance to you and your clients across the Denver metro area. Blue Moon prides itself on raising the bar to ensure a great experience for each client every time. Whether it is a family or a business looking to downsize, the process begins with a free consultation to discuss the client’s goals and evaluate the items to be sold. A sale date is established and hundreds of professional photos are taken to launch an online advertising campaign. Frank dives in to conduct extensive research on the more unique and valuable pieces to ensure items are sold at the best possible price. Clients are always reserved the final decision on what goes and what stays, and Laura and Frank provide guidance every step along the way.

GRIT is the foundation of our company, and we do not make promises we do not keep.

@realproducers

realproducersmag.com

Laura and Frank are confident in their ability to achieve fair market value for their clients. They draw on the company’s tight network of experts and knowledge of current market trends as well as real data from thousands of successful Blue Moon Estate Sales across the country. To secure a successful turnout, Laura and Frank market to their direct, extensive customer base. Unlike their competitors, they do not rely solely on third-party companies to drive buyers. This unique combination helps them reach more potential buyers for their clients than clients might be able to reach themselves. “Our multi-faceted marketing approach means that we reach the right people at the right time. Our target audience is largely made up of families, new homeowners, potential homeowners, savvy shoppers, and collectors looking for unique items. We work hard to find buyers in every niche possible,” shares Laura. Prior to the sale is when the magic happens. Laura and Frank transform the home into an elevated retail experience. They staff the sale, provide tables and display racks, prepare staging areas, promote items of interest, and clean up once the sale is complete. Every item in the sale is priced at fair market value, which is determined from past sales, market trends and, of course, the condition, age, history, and other attributes of an item. Sales are typically conducted on-site over two days unless additional time is deemed necessary. Clients receive payment five to seven business days after the sale’s closure. “While we have many great services, we are especially proud of our staging and pricing skills. We understand the nuances of staging and know how to create a sale-friendly environment, regardless of whether a home is big or small, old or new, metropolitan or rural,” Frank says.

and account relationships. Drawing on her strong customer and client relations skills, she drives the team to provide the best service at all times. The Melishes are thrilled to help Denver residents streamline and simplify their lives. They came to the business with a passion for antiques and breathing new life into old relics. They understand the stress that can come along with downsizing belongings and are happy to take the load off of their clients with respect, sensitivity, and compassion.

Blue Moon accepts cash and credit cards and is the first estate sales company to offer a rewards program for shoppers. They utilize a full Point of Sales system, allowing them to track all sales and provide itemized reporting for shoppers and clients. In the unregulated industry of estate sales, Blue Moon is raising the bar to ensure their clients have a great experience. The fee structure is clear, and clients and referral sources are represented with honesty and integrity.

Contacting Laura and Frank means taking a step toward a rewarding estate sale experience full of appreciation, creative spirit, and attention to detail. Whether you are looking to downsize belongings or discover your next estate sale treasure, they are ready to meet the challenge!

“Grit is the foundation of our company, and we do not make promises we do not keep,” Frank added. Laura and Frank have been married for 27 years. Frank worked in the construction industry for 35 years, yet always dabbled in research, history, and treasure hunting. He brings his first-hand experience and genuine compassion for helping families during times of transition to offer direct assistance throughout the process, A to Z. When we first met Jeff Plous and were regaled by his story in our June 2019 issue of Denver Real Producers, he told us he was planning on starting his own brokerage. So, we figured we’d check back in on him and see how it’s going. Turns out, things are doing great!

Hatch just received DMAR 2021 Brokerage of the Year for an office with up to five agents, both for number of sides and total production. Jeff was also recognized #5 for total production as an individual agent.

Denver Real Producers • 35

“Our first year in business (2020), we helped over 100 people and did about $66 million in sales,” Jeff explains. “This year’s DMAR Excellence Awards show us that Hatch is definitely headed in the right direction!” In addition to Jeff, Hatch Realty includes Taylor Simmons, Ashley Mendenhall (whom we met last July), and Deena Rathjen. While Deena is just getting started in her real estate career as a rookie, Jeff, Taylor, and Ashley have sold nearly $400 million in career volume combined. Before entering real estate sales, Taylor worked for a property management and vacation rental company, Ashley was a hairstylist, and Deena was an event planner for multiple luxury rental buildings. Jeff worked for Centex Homes and a custom home builder in Chicago. While they all have varying experiences, the one thing that connects the team at Hatch Realty is their love of real estate. For Jeff, the passion spans from selling homes to building them and everything in between. He developed the interest as a kid, sketching floor plans on graph paper and building crazy houses and buildings with balsa wood, construction paper, and Legos. He dreamt of becoming a developer and double majored in real estate and finance. Taylor wanted to have more personal interaction with clients outside of just being a property manager, and he wanted to help people build their real estate portfolios. Deena has family members who are top agents in Iowa, and she always wanted to be an agent herself. Ashley wanted to be in real estate for over 10 years but thought she wasn’t “sales-y” enough. It wasn’t until a loan officer friend explained to her real estate was much more about building relationships than sales that she felt confident enough to pursue her passion. 36 • June 2021

Spend any amount of time around this fantastic foursome and one easily picks up on their love for the real estate game and the organic, flowing synergy among them. When Jeff totes his kids’ toy computers and singing phones to a team gathering, the rest of the team dives right in, engaging in the good humor and touch of whimsy to inspire their strategic planning and brainstorming session. “Since becoming a licensed agent in 2004, I’ve learned that not all agents are created equal,” Jeff explains. “There are those in it for the passion and those in it for the money. I opened Hatch because I wanted to create a brokerage designed around being an agent for the passion.” “I don’t want to be a company focused on how many agents we have and how many sales we have each day/ month/year,” he continues. “I want a company simply focused on helping people make good decisions – period. I want to be known for finding Susie a yard for her dog, or Adam his first home, or the Jeffersons their dream estate. I’m in this for life. The other agents who work at Hatch are as well. We just love making a difference in the lives of our clients.”

buyer they got the home they wanted or a seller their pride and joy of a home is about to break the record for their neighborhood. With the changing industry and introduction of iBuyer programs, Zillow agents, etc., Jeff knows Hatch won’t be a fit for every client out there. However, he also knows that not every client wants to “feel like they are ordering fast food from a kiosk. We are here for those clients.” “Success is winning that impossible bidding war, breaking a record with a sales price for your seller, or even just helping your client understand that they should hold off and rent another year so they can be more competitive in the market. We define success as helping our clients make the best decisions and getting them what they want.” Opening Hatch has been a dream come true for Jeff. He and his associates are excited to continue finding new and unique ways to help people with their real estate endeavors.

NICK CORAM

rising star Photos by Merne Judson By Chris Menezes Shot on location at The Maven Hotel

T H E R E WA R D S O F P E R S I S T E N C E

REFINED BY FAILURES, NICK CORAM HAS AN ENTREPRENEURIAL TENACITY THAT WON’T QUIT. WHILE HE HAS OPENED AND CLOSED MULTIPLE BUSINESSES IN HIS LIFE, HE NEVER LET THE NEGATIVE PERCEPTION OF DEFEAT DETER HIS ABILITY TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD AND TO TRY AGAIN. INSTEAD, HE FINDS THE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED IN EVERY SITUATION, FLIPPING “FAILURE” ON ITS HEAD AND EXTRACTING THE SUCCESS, OR POSITIVITY, INHERENT IN EACH LIFE EXPERIENCE.

Because of this perceptiveness, Nick has no problem saying he was an absolutely terrible student growing up. He found the experiences he had traveling and starting businesses were just as valuable. “I was just never a fan of traditional education,” Nick says, but he’ll never forget when his Civics teacher pulled him aside one day, and with tears in her eyes said, “Nick, I hate it when you talk in my class, and it is not because you keep interrupting. I hate when you talk in my class because people listen to you and take what you say to heart. I hope you understand this better moving forward.” 44 • June 2021

Nick took those words to heart and began implementing them when he moved to Fort Collins and started a t-shirt company. TreeHouse quickly developed a following in the small college town. Nick became well adept in graphic design and screen-printing during this time, which has allowed him to create amazing marketing campaigns. “Looking back now, I’m not sure if we ever actually made money, but one thing is for sure, it was pretty crazy to see a lot of people I didn’t know wearing our clothing,” says Nick. “Every now and then I would compliment them and give the high five and continue on like it was no big deal. In my mind, I was freaking out! I’ll never forget that feeling.” Nick had to eventually shut down the company when it was threatened by a lawsuit, due to a “national expansion gone wrong,” as Nick puts it. Afterward, Nick worked various 9-to-5 jobs that he hated and moved back home with his parents. It was at this point in his life, however, that Nick had a huge shift in trajectory when he decided to get his certificate to teach Yoga. “It [Yoga] allowed me space and understanding to be good with where I am because it’s exactly where I should be. a decision from that point on that I was not going to encourage people to buy or do things that they honestly did not need,” Nick says. “When I started practicing and teaching yoga, everything changed,” he continues. “I started feeling like I had nothing to fear because my only intention was to do good. This has been essential in real estate, especially when it really starts to wear on me.” Nick obtained his license three years ago in Colorado Springs and had quite a turbulent start. After enduring a few initial disappointments, only two months later, he stopped pursuing real estate. “I was so lost and defeated,” he says. After a year of personal training at 24-hour fitness, making little money and going nowhere, he decided to message his soon-to-be mentor, Mark Davis, about getting back into real estate. “I don’t even know where to start in saying how thankful I am for Mark Davis. From day one he told me the truth about real estate. He critiqued my client calls so hard that it kinda hurt. I wonder if he knew that was the best way to motivate me.” Nick started coming into the office just to watch Mark work. He then started calling through his numbers list with an autodialer for hours. “I never pulled a sale from it, but I think I earned Mark’s respect because he allowed me to go on an appointment with him, and then allowed me to split the deal. THIS WAS SO HUGE. I continued to follow in his footsteps and used the commission to buy my own lead generator,” Nick explains.

produced over $4.4 million in volume. He is currently working hard to develop a Defi Application that facilitates real estate transactions by adapting blockchain technology. “I believe Stable-Coins will be the future of real estate and I’m excited to see where this goes,” Nick explains.

One year later, Nick moved to Denver and joined Equity Colorado Real Estate Group. Last year, he

“I wore a robe and carried a wand the whole time,” says Nick. “I even sprung for the VIP all-access tour (totally worth it). This has been a dream of mine for a long time and I did it all thanks to real estate.”

46 • June 2021

Nick is living his dream right now. In addition to loving real estate, he still teaches yoga on the side and enjoys sewing leather bags to decompress when he gets really stressed. He recently purchased his first place and is working towards his second. He was even able to fulfill a longtime dream of visiting Harry Potter World at Universal Studios.

A seven-thousand-square-foot warehouse grants Amanda the opportunity to provide the Denver Metro luxury market with a revolving inventory of unique furnishings and décor. Through the company’s website, thedenrentals.com, Amanda also has reimagined

the way local stylists can operate their businesses. The fully “shoppable” website allows stagers and stylists to see what items are in stock, add them to their cart, select a date with the timeslot, push “enter” and Amanda’s team will do the rest. “We have truly revolutionized the way stagers can do business. No more long hours spent shuffling through warehouse aisles hoping for options to be available and within budget. Stagers can even pull together mood boards to present with their bids.” The Den offers their inventory for sale with the homes and recently launched @thedenrentals_shop to sell and share some of their favorite pieces as well.

Taking a page out of her fashion design playbook, New York-transplant Amanda Eufer-Lewis is lifting Denver and Boulder home staging and styling to new heights. Her goal? To exceed the expectations of buyers in Colorado’s white-hot housing market.

Amanda earned a stellar reputation leading public relations campaigns for top fashion brands in New York City. The urge to be closer to family and invest in real estate beckoned her and her husband west, and they settled in Denver. As she looked to shift 52 • June 2021

gears from public relations and get back into a design-focused career, Amanda quickly – and happily -- fell in love with home staging. For six years, Amanda worked in the Denver metro market as an independent home stager. Yet she felt the urge to control her own inventory. She yearned to facilitate her growing business as well as that of other stagers and stylists and decided to expand her business into a full-service home staging rental and prop house. In January 2020, The Den (@thedenrentals) was born. @realproducers

“I wanted to provide Denver stagers and REALTORS® with a higher-end look to match or exceed the expectations of buyers in the escalating market, especially with higher-end listings,” Amanda says.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Amanda attended Oklahoma State University, where she studied apparel design and production. After obtaining her degree, she moved to New York City and won a position as an assistant designer, eventually transitioning into public relations. She finished her career in fashion as Public Relations Director for LaPointe, after working for other top fashion houses, including Jonathan Simkhai and Lela Rose.

The Den curates all décor used in a home staging to complement the specific property’s features. “There is no one style that fits all or even most homes, so I always set out to use modern furnishings and eclectic styling. I want to highlight the newest trends so properties are always ensured to be set apart from the rest.”

Healthy Lungs (and Hold the Chemicals)

A perennial environmental concern over our lifetimes has been air pollution, with terms like “fossil fuels” and “climate change” in the news near-daily. Through decades of research, we’ve come to understand that pollutants in the atmosphere are harmful to the health of humans, other living beings, and our planet, with numerous organizations and NGOs, from grassroots to federal levels, working to pass and enforce laws to help clean up our “dirty” air. How often, though, do we think about the air inside our homes? The sanitation of indoor air is easy to take for granted; we sometimes forget about those systems entirely unless it’s time to change filters or a problem arises. However, consider this: According to the EPA, “Americans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors,” and concentrations of some dangerous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and radon, are two to five times higher indoors than outdoors. Furthermore, serious health concerns, including respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer, have been linked to these pollutants; in particular, high-risk groups such as children, seniors, and the chronically ill tend to be most affected since they are at home and indoors most.

is source control, eliminating individual causes of pollution or reducing their emissions (e.g., sealing up asbestos, keeping air conditioning units clean). Experts recommend increasing ventilation in your home – for example, opening windows and doors or operating window or attic fans – as well as installing HEPA filters in air conditioners. Choose low-VOC products when shopping for cleaning, building, personal care, and pesticide products. As for gasses in the home, if you are cooking with natural gas or a propane stove, have gas jets cleaned and serviced annually so that gas burns cleanly. This summer, breathe easy (and reduce your risk for illness) by taking the steps above!

What’s more, according to experts, nearly every room in the house affords potential sources of air pollution. For example, fireplaces and fuel-burning combustion appliances, such as ovens, stoves, furnaces, and water heaters, release harmful gases and particulates into the air. The EPA also points to tobacco products, excess moisture, and outside sources, such as pesticides and outdoor air pollution, as major contributors to an unhealthy indoor atmosphere. We all love our furry friends, but, yes, they (along with dust mites and mold), too, introduce additional allergens into the home’s air. Finally, increased use of personal care products, pesticides, household cleaners, and synthetic building materials containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been shown to contribute significantly to poor indoor air quality. Given that indoor air pollution has been associated by the World Health Organization with everything from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer to asthma, chronic headaches, and fatigue, it’s a concern to take seriously. Luckily, a few easy ways to purify the air in the home do exist. According to the EPA, the most effective method to improve indoor air 54 • June 2021
