Founded by caring for the ones we love. Papa & Barkley was inspired by an experience I had with my Dad and my gentle red-nosed pitbull Barkley. My father became bedridden with debilitating back pain, hospitalized, and then put on hospice care. Because nothing else worked, I researched cannabis pain balms online and used a borrowed crockpot to make what became our very first balm. When I applied it to my dad’s back, he responded amazingly and I could get him out of bed. Over the next few months with lots of my balm and loving care, he got better and taken off hospice. He lived almost 2 more years. The experience was incredibly empowering and opened my eyes to the power of cannabis to improve people’s lives. Sincerely, Adam Grossman Founder & CEO

When it comes to fall, this issue covers it all: We’ve got everything from a guide to help you decide which CBD product is right for you to a rundown of the most fun CBD-infused Halloween candies. That’s what is so amazing about the world of CBD—one moment you can be talking about what it may be able to do for world-class athletes, and the next moment you can be reading some great recipes for the family Thanksgiving dinner. Because who couldn’t use a little anxiety relief on that day? I hope you enjoy this issue as much as my team and I enjoyed creating it for you. Be well,

Aromatherapy Is a Sign of the Times By Chloe Olewitz

s s CBD’s popularity grows, so too does interest in other alternative approaches to health and wellness. Aromatherapy is one method benefiting from this resurgence, with new essential oil brands and remedies cropping up left and right. The buzz around aromatherapy bridges the many Zeitgeists of today, from tech progress to the modern boom in new-age spirituality and home healing. Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to improve physical, mental and even spiritual health. Essential oils are extracted from the most potent or fragrant parts of a plant, such as flowers, herbs, roots or tree bark. They’re also highly concentrated—220 pounds of lavender flowers produce about 1 pound of
essential oil, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Diffusers are one of the most common entry points to essential oils. Although diffusers are an indirect inhalation method by distributing essential oil molecules into the air around you, essential oils can also be applied through direct inhalation via a personal inhaler that delivers the oil directly into your respiratory system and bloodstream. Of course, aromatherapy also plays a role in many schools of massage practice, with massage oils, creams and balms serving as the carriers for specific essential oils and all their benefits. (It’s worth noting that diffusers aren’t considered effective for use with most CBD oils.) Essential oils are typically sold in their highly concentrated form as isolated scents; you can experiment with mixing
and matching the scents that please your senses and serve your wellness needs. Sometimes, concoctions incorporating multiple oils to suit a specific condition are sold pre-mixed. Whether you’re treating a physical or mental issue, or even deepening your spiritual practice, there’s probably an ideal essential oil for you. As each plant and its aromas differ, so do the chemical compositions of their essential oils. To understand this alchemy, we turn to a term that’s
familiar in the CBD world: terpenes. Deborah Devar, owner and operator of Path to Perfect Health, has been studying aromatherapy for more than 40 years. She explains that “essential oils are composed of hundreds of thousands of terpenes built into compounds: alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids.” Each essential oil has between 200 and 800 known chemical constituents, and still more that have yet to be identified. These

modern boom in new-age spirituality and home healing. constituents are the building blocks that come together in all kinds of natural matter. Devar points out that there are also unidentified constituents in the fruits, vegetables and herbs we consume every day, which all contain terpenes too. Devar explains how each Path to Perfect essential oil formulation is blended using many single essential oils to create balance and user safety. All single essential oils, like lavender and lemon, are made with millions of constituents such as terpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenols. “The blends are created in a way that will create the maximum aromatic orbital clouds to assist and support the body and mind’s ability to heal. The PTPH formulas are always skin safe and user friendly,” she says. So how does the chemistry work? “Essential oil molecules build from terpenes and amino acids,” Devar explains. “What’s most exciting is understanding how the atoms configure into the molecular structures that support the body to heal. “Aromatic atomic orbitals are supercharged energy units that move about freely, promoting homeostasis. They behave in a gentle, calm way, offering extra electrons to atoms in need. This symmetry, strength, and freedom are what allow specific essential oil molecules to gravitate quickly to where the body and mind are out of balance.” S OLEWITZ is a freelance writer based in Los Angeles.

2018 survey commissioned by the National Sleep Foundation found that 90 percent of American adults fail to prioritize sleep over other facets of their lives, such as fitness, nutrition, work, social activities and hobbies. Renee Belz, 32, isn’t one of them, though. She places great emphasis on getting a good night’s sleep—so much so that she uses CBD to help her sleep more deeply. Off and on since December 2016, the Las Vegas-based nutrition consultant has taken a personal serving of 20 mg a day (about one hour before bedtime)

She’s found that, based on data from the tracker, she sleeps more soundly when she uses CBD. “It took me a long time to see any benefits, so I
was disappointed at first. I tried nine different products before finding one that worked well for me,” Belz says. Belz recommends experimenting with products and serving sizes until you see positive results from CBD. “I don’t feel anything with 10 mg,” she says, “but with 20 to 40 mg, I feel a big difference.”

When combined with daytime sleepiness, snoring can be a sign of a life-threatening condition called sleep apnea—pauses in breath that can place excessive strain on the heart and cardiovascular system.
Sleep habits change as we age, but our sleep requirements generally don’t. Although adults tend to wake up more often and sleep fewer hours, their bodies still need seven to nine hours every day. Consult your doctor if you regularly have trouble sleeping more than a few hours at a time.

Breathe Easy Meditation can ( literally) change your life.
HE BENEFITS of breaking a sweat are well-known, but do you realize that taking time to breathe in between sweat sessions can also turn back the years and improve both your physiology and state of mind? Meditation, yoga and tai chi are known as mind-body intervention exercises (MBIs). Although known for relaxation, MBIs can do so much more. In one study involving 39 family dementia caregivers (with a median age of 60), two options were given: practice Kirtan Kriya, a type of meditation with chanting involved, or listen to relaxing music for just 12 minutes a day for eight weeks. Those who chose music experienced a 3.7 percent improvement in telomerase activity. (Telomeres are caps at the ends of DNA strands that help protect against age-related deterioration.) Not bad. But those who opted to chant and meditate

improved their telomerase activity by a whopping 43 percent. An aid to stress management, meditation improves the molecular reactions in your DNA that cause ill health and depression, and even helps preserve your telomeres. That’s major. syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder and fibromyalgia, to name a few—and it helps relieve depression by lowering levels of inflammatory cytokines that are released in response to stress. It has been shown to increase electrical activity in the prefrontal cortex, the right anterior insula, and right hippocampus—all areas that control positive emotions and anxiety. These areas of the brain also act as a command center for your immune system. The best part? Meditation is free
and can be done anywhere. Start with five minutes a day, maybe first thing in the morning when you wake or at night before bed. You can even do it on your lunch hour in your office, car or a park. Work your way up to 15 minutes. When considering the optimal “dose” of meditation, remember that there really isn’t a fixed answer. We’re all different. We all respond to meditation techniques differently, so more doesn’t always equal better. If you prefer more private time, try an app or read a book about meditation
techniques. If you’d like structure and accountability, take a guided meditation class. There is no one way to meditate. To get started, plan to meditate for five to 15 minutes a day at any point that’s convenient for you. It can feel tedious or difficult at first, but just like any form of exercise, you’ll form a habit that gets easier and even enjoyable with time. HESE DAYS, IT CAN FEEL LIKE THERE ARE AS MANY WAYS TO USE CBD as there are cannabis startups looking to carve out a niche in the green rush. It’s a whirlwind of information, and there’s certainly a learning curve to making sense of all the options—from tinctures to sprays, topicals to transdermals, and supplements to snacks. When you get into the chemistry, the questions only continue: Is this product made with full- or broadspectrum CBD? Is it oil-soluble or water-soluble? Is it designed for physical relief from inflammation and pain, or is it intended to induce homeostasis more broadly? All the pieces of the CBD puzzle can get confusing, in particular for athletes who need to feel good in order to perform their best. If you’re incorporating CBD into your exercise regimen for the first time, a good way to start is to reflect on what made you want to begin using CBD in the first place. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, recovering from a sportsrelated injury, proactively preparing for an increased exercise regimen, or just searching for some support in reaching homeostasis through an active lifestyle, the way you introduce CBD into your system matters. We asked four CBD companies that cater specifically to athletes and active people about their most popular products, their approach to health through cannabis, and everything you need to know about the CBD their product formulas use. As long as you’re keeping your personal health goal in mind, these brief introductions should help you distinguish the optimal delivery method, CBD concentration, and product type for you.
ABLE’s Tri-Phasic Sleep Strip is particularly exciting for anyone—athlete or not—who understands the importance of sleep to living a healthier, happier life. Krista Treide, ABLE’s chief brand officer, describes the product as “a thin strip that is held on the tongue for two minutes, requires no water, works quickly, and delivers the highest percentage of absorption into the body.” Because it dissolves on the tongue, ABLE says the sleep strip is three times more effective than a product that enters the digestive system through the stomach and liver. It blends 25 mg of CBD together with terpenes, melatonin, and 5-HTP for people looking for an easier time falling asleep, sound sleep throughout the night, and a refreshed feeling when waking up in the morning.
T
he ABLE CBD story starts with Bill Ekeler and PJ Treide, two co-founders from the Midwest who, over the course of their 30-year friendship, have shared their passion for leaving the world better than they found it. They each made their way to CBD independently, while searching for alternative ways to help loved ones suffering from stroke, arthritis, insomnia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Their individual discoveries of the potential medicinal and healing properties of CBD inspired them to share that learning with the world. Both of ABLE CBD’s founders competed at high levels in their respective athletic disciplines, and they also work closely with advisers such as the head strength coach from Vanderbilt University, a Kansas University football coach and ABLE’s in-house compound pharmacist. By consulting with athletes at the professional level and from Division I colleges, ABLE has taken a reverse approach to understanding and then solving the biggest obstacles that stand in the way of achieving prime athletic health.
26 |
C B D S N A P S H O T. C O M
ABLE CBD addresses four core areas that are particularly important for athletes: relief from exerciseinduced inflammation and pain, support for stress, improved calm and focus, and healthier overall sleep cycles. ABLE CBD has released tinctures in three different strengths to help with inflammation, pain, stress, calm, and focus, and its rapid cooling cream works in tandem with the tinctures to provide topical relief from pain throughout the day. But sleep is where ABLE has truly doubled down. Its findings have unveiled sleep obstacles for people striving to perform at optimal levels in their everyday lives. “We have found that there are extreme cases of sleep management that require greater science, and that is where we have dedicated our resources to create a completely new category,” says Krista Treide, ABLE’s chief brand officer. In addition to sleep tablets, which combine CBD and melatonin for a more restful night’s sleep, ABLE CBD has developed a tri-phasic sleep strip that nurtures healthier sleep habits.

levate CBD focuses on full-spectrum, pharmaceutical-quality products. “Our mission is to get people back to living,” says Cindy Blum, the company’s vice president of marketing. “We strive to help our consumers overcome mind and body obstacles so they can live the full, active, happy lives they desire.” That lifestyle goal is important to the Elevate CBD team, which brings together professionals from the pharmaceutical and consumer product industries who are also active in their own lives, from fitness trainers to college athletes, runners to weightlifters. Elevate doesn’t just test for potency, purity, and safety in all the products it releases, the team also works with senior medical adviser Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi to ensure that their formulas are directly addressing the real needs of athletes. Research pointing to CBD’s ability to decrease inflammation and pain in the muscles and joints is an important breakthrough for athletes climbing toward peak performance. And as athletes’ interest in natural, nontoxic, and non-addictive solutions grows, CBD has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional medicines and supplements for a high-activity lifestyle. Elevate seeks to address every stage of an active lifestyle, for fitness neophytes and Spartan racers alike. “CBD activates the endocannabinoid system receptors in the body, which are responsible for homeostasis,” Blum says, “regulating things like pain, inflammation, sleep, mood, and the immune system. In order to reach your optimal state of fitness and activity, these are all things that need to be considered.”
Elevate’s Heating and Cooling Pain Relief Creams combine CBD with menthol and magnesium. Elevate suggests that athletes alternate between the separate heat and cool formulas to support all stages of recovery. Cindy Blum, Elevate’s vice president of marketing, also recommends Elevate’s CBD Oral Spray for on-the-go athletes. The all-natural hemp oil spray is designed to provide fast-acting relief, and the spray bottle makes it convenient for athletes looking for a boost without a break, “even during a race.” The spray comes in mint and cinnamon flavors, with 150 mg of CBD in the 7.5-ml bottle and 600 mg in the 30-ml bottle.

enesee focuses on health and wellness in the form of sports nutrition supplements and food products infused with CBD. “Our vision is a world filled with healthy, active, and happy people,” says founder Will Carr. “How we treat ourselves, our customers and our brand is rooted in feeling your best, moving toward balance, and taking care of yourself—mind, body and soul.” A food-focused approach to achieving homeostasis, balanced health in the body, means putting recipe development at the top of the list. Genesee uses plant proteins in its protein bar, emphasizing its commitment to natural ingredients. They also work with a recipe research and development team to create flavors, textures, and nutrient profiles that taste good while also serving their healthful purpose and packing enough protein to serve the needs of athletes. Balancing the endocannabinoid system is another of Genesee’s main priorities, and was the impetus for infusing its plant-based, wellness-focused supplements with CBD in the first place. Genesee uses water-soluble, broadspectrum CBD. “Using a chromatography process, we are able to isolate and remove the THC from our product while leaving the hemp extract mostly intact,” Carr says. “This allows our product to be as close to how nature intended as possible, without the psychoactive effects of THC.” And the water-soluble aspect results in CBD that is more absorbent than other hemp oil extracts (five times more absorbent, according to the Genesee website). CBD typically comes in an oil-soluble form, but in its oil form it takes longer to be fully absorbed through the digestive tract and can lose much of the nutrients during the process. Water-soluble CBD products are formulated in a way that they can bind to water, allowing your body to absorb it more effectively and efficiently.
grams of protein and 5 mg of CBD in each serving, and a Protein Powder with 20 grams of protein and 10 mg of CBD in each serving. The plant-based ingredients Genesee uses include hemp, pea, sunflower seed, pumpkin seed and watermelon seed. Although the bar is an easy choice for athletes who want to toss a snack in their gear bag and hit the road, the plant-based protein powder opens more creative options; add it to smoothies, juices or any of your favorite recovery recipes.

Myaderm’s CBD Sport Cream is popular with athletes, according to CEO Eric Smart. It’s helpful when applied before, during and after workouts to shorten the recovery process from specific injuries or just from the average aches and pains of athletic exertion. The sport cream comes in two sizes: A standard 50-gram bottle contains 1200 mg of CBD, and the double strength dosage contains 2400 mg of CBD in the same 50-gram bottle. Another athlete favorite is Myaderm’s CBD Foot Cream. Above and beyond the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, the foot cream also provides anti-fungal and anti-microbial benefits that can help with everything from sweaty gym shoes to barefoot activities such as martial arts and dance. Each 15-gram bottle contains 350 mg of CBD.
M
yaderm is focused on CBD topical relief for body and skin care, creating pharmacist-formulated, transdermal and topical pain creams. In terms of relief, the difference between transdermals and topicals is an important detail when it comes to understanding CBD products. The keys are depth and penetration. Topical products work at the surface level to soothe pain and don’t penetrate more than a few layers of skin. Transdermals are absorbed through the skin and penetrate the deeper muscles and connecting tissue areas. “There are clinical studies and evidence that CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory without the negative effects seen in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,” says Myaderm CEO Eric Smart, referencing a common category of pain medications that includes over-the-counter pills such as aspirin and ibuprofen. “Myaderm’s creams penetrate through the skin layers and deliver CBD to the muscles and connecting tissue, allowing anti-inflammatory properties to work directly and quickly,” Smart says.

C B D S N A P S H O T. C O M
The direct penetrative ability of Myaderm creams demonstrates the way transdermal products are able to bypass the gastrointestinal tract and other internal organs such as the liver, which do come into play when CBD is ingested and absorbed through the digestive system. This makes Myaderm’s transdermal solutions faster-acting and longer-lasting than other application types, increasing effectiveness and cutting straight to the chase: relief. Myaderm combines pure CBD powder from agricultural industrial hemp sources with pharmaceuticalgrade oils like eucalyptus, tea tree, and peppermint to create formulas that treat different ailments and concerns best served by transdermal applications, such as pain and inflammation. By adding a pump delivery system to every bottle, Myaderm also prioritizes accurate and precise dosing so that every treatment delivers the same quantity of CBD directly to where it’s needed most. BD is often spoken and written about in broad terms. There’s an all-purpose element of CBD that makes it appealing to the average person, but when you need your mind and body to perform at the highest levels on the biggest stages, you need specific and measurable results. As the science evolves, more and more professional athletes are turning to CBD to optimize their performance and help them train for or recover from competition.
These six athletes from different sports have made CBD part of their competitive routine. Athletes tend to be very particular with their processes. True to CBD form, each has found a brand and routine that works for them,

ost businesspeople are looking for the next good opportunity. Former National Football League running back Tiki Barber looks for the good that he can bring to every opportunity. Barber, who played 10 seasons for the New York Giants and was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor, co-founded Grove Group Management, an investment and management firm specializing in the cannabis industry. His motivation was twofold: “I saw it first as a huge economic opportunity, but also as a way to affect social progress.” Barber didn’t have the opportunity to use CBD during his playing career but he is well-aware of the physical and mental toll that football takes on athletes. “Stress management is one of the most difficult things for a player to control,” Barber says. “Whether it’s coming down from the high of performance or trying to learn a playbook, being able to relax is key to optimization.” For Barber, it’s not just CBD’s potential for effectiveness in that regard, he also emphasizes it as a replacement for dangerous alternatives. “Alcohol too often becomes a solution, which has significant risk factors,” he says. NFL careers are fleeting—the average tenure lasts less than four years, and a dependence on alcohol or painkillers has not only ended careers prematurely, it’s ruined lives. Barber knows firsthand how CBD can benefit professional athletes and he’s eager for the NFL and NFL Player’s Association’s stated commitment to look into cannabis-related research. But most of Grove Group Management’s market doesn’t play in the NFL, and Barber and his colleagues’ business plan is focused on CBD’s potential to help the average person address things such as “chronic pain management, stress, and anxiety.”

CBD is the type of supplement that often takes a few uses to get a feel for, but Carmouche remembers the first time she used one of Hemp Meds’ sleep aids. She wanted to work with the company immediately. As of publication, Carmouche is ranked third in the UFC’s flyweight division, but the fighter plans to keep using CBD well after her career is over. As a veteran, she still battles with social anxiety and sleep issues, and her Hemp Meds products have provided a welcome relief. “Even if I wasn’t fighting, just for my own quality of life, I’d be using CBD.”

iz Carmouche’s Ultimate Fighting Championship debut was a historic moment for mixed martial arts. In 2013, she competed against Ronda Rousey in the UFC’s first-ever women’s MMA match. But Carmouche’s journey has been one of discipline, mental strength and body maintenance. Prior to joining the UFC, she spent five years in the Marine Corps including three tours of duty in the Middle East. Carmouche once studied kinesiology with the intention of becoming a sports therapist. As a veteran and a fighter, she has put her body through tremendous punishment, and even as MMA has soared in popularity, the real toll of the sport goes largely unnoticed. “I do think that people can identify and empathize with those big moments and those hard hits, but they don’t see all the little ones that do add up,” Carmouche says. “The months leading up to a fight, you’re just destroying your body.” Nagging injuries can cripple a fighter’s career. It was a fellow veteran who trains at her gym that put her on to CBD. Now, partnered with Hemp Meds, CBD oil is an essential part of Carmouche’s routine that aids recovery from aches and pains that would normally sideline her for a day or two. “The two primary benefits that I get from the use of CBD are inflammation reduction—it helps significantly by both ingesting and topical relief—and of course pain as well,” she says.

hat happens when you spend more than a decade chasing after and living the only dream you ever had, and you’re left, well, exhausted? By the time Kassia Meador was 28, surfing had been her job for roughly 12 years. She had won competitions and become a celebrity in her world— she is considered the “queen of nose riding,” the art of inching up to the nose of the board while riding. But it was right around her late 20s when things
Meador changed. The constant travel, the pressure, being told what swimsuit to wear or what board to use; it was all chipping away at the satisfaction that comes from doing what she loves for a living. She needed a solution: She wanted to do and experience things that weren’t entirely goal-based, or at least weren’t serving the goals other people thought she should be chasing. “I didn’t want to ‘should’ myself into anything,” Meador, now 37, says. So, she looked inward. She made meditation part of her daily life. She set a template to use her platform to give back. She became active on the creative aspects of her partnerships, leading to her own successful company, KASSIA+SURF. All of this rejuvenated her career and, more importantly, her quality of life. But if you think that mental fatigue is just a symptom of restlessness or an evolving personality, it’s worth noting the physical toll surfing has taken on Meador’s body. She’s broken ribs, dislocated shoulders and her foot is essentially held together by screws It was nearly six years ago that she was introduced to Ojai Energetics and its CBD products, which seemed to alleviate the symptoms of her countless concussions. “I just felt connected to it,” Meador says. “I introduced it to my mom [who has multiple sclerosis]. She felt better.” Now, Meador has partnered with Ojai Energetics to promote its sports gel, which her father uses daily for back pain. Its effects on her concussion symptoms have improved her quality of life, but speaking as an athlete, she says its No. 1 benefit happens at night. “As an athlete, it helps me sleep. During sleep is when a lot of recovery happens.” CBD is only one aspect of Meador’s daily routine, but it’s all part of her plan to add only that which brings balance and happiness to her life.

rchery is a sport that requires skill, concentration, discipline and practice. But those aren’t the terms that Paralympic archer Sammi Tucker uses to describe it. “It’s meditation with a weapon,” says Tucker, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. The road for Tucker, 50, has been long and filled with the types of setbacks that average people are unable to overcome. In 2010, she nearly died in a motorcycle accident. Her lower left arm was amputated. She was introduced to archery after losing her arm and was told that no woman had ever represented the U.S. in Open Compound Archery at the Paralympics. Her new goal was clear. “It was 19 months of nothing but shooting archery,” she says. Tucker is right-handed, but because of her disability, she has to use her right hand to hold the bow. Initially, she used her mouth to pull back and aim the arrow, but in 2016, the year of the Paralympics, she switched to using a shoulder-release method that involved a harness. Tucker has no biceps in her left arm so she hadn’t lifted anything with that shoulder in years. She told a trainer, “You have six weeks to get me to where I can pull this thing back 300 times a day.” (Since the Paralympics, she has switched back to a mouth release). Now, Tucker has taken on cycling and has her sights set on a triathlon. She’s managed to find a resource that accompanies her ambition and discipline: the CBD products of Kannaway, which she endorses.

“I get up in the morning and I take my CBD because I’m going to go train, and the more relaxed and loose your body is, the more effective your training,” she says. Tucker deals with significant nerve pain from her accident that’s amplified by excessive training. The medication given to her by the VA was deeply affecting her cognitive function. “[The medication provided] was not a viable option for me,” she says. “Kannaway’s CBD oils help with my arm pain.”
Her mind has willed her through trials and past goals. She does what she can to reward it. “Archery is a sport that turns you inward,” she explains. “Your greatest competition is yourself. It also shows you who you are and tunes you into your inner voice and values and dreams and power.”

Urango T
here’s an expression in beach volleyball for when a player is returning to the sport after a break or trying to make the transition from indoor volleyball: Getting your sand legs. Some argue it can take up to three weeks to really find your sand legs, and you better put in the work to develop them before you start competing. It’s an apt metaphor for the career of Association of Volleyball Professionals player Geena Urango, who knows that success comes from the deliberate acts of preparation. Urango, a Southern Californian, was introduced to volleyball at age 11. The beach would become her summer babysitter. “I would play pickup games at Huntington Beach all day every day,” the 29-year-old says. As an indoor collegiate volleyball player at the University of Southern California, Urango earned a masters in communication management. Out of college, she interned for the AVP, managing its social media and website. During her first week, Urango’s boss asked, “You’re going to play too, right?” She hadn’t realized it was an option, so she said yes. A year later, there was a problem: She was doing too well on the tour. She had to leave the job behind. A difficult choice when the main source of income for these players is payouts from just eight AVP tournaments per year along with a few local events and, if they’re lucky and perform well, some international events. Sponsors can help offset the costs associated with travel, training and recovery, but in a sport that has been recognized less than a decade at the Division I college level, the living is rarely easy. This is Urango’s sixth season with the AVP, and she’s made it to five finals. She is regularly among the lead in ace serves in the circuit. “My ultimate goal is to win an AVP event,” she says. According to her, experience is the secret to a successful career. “You look at some of the top athletes who are competing at the Olympic level, and they’re often in their mid-to-late thirties.” Longevity isn’t an accident; it’s about consistent, deliberate choices. When she tried a series of products by cbdMD, she was shocked by how quickly they relieved her pain, so she sent the company a message on
Instagram and a partnership was formed. “It was just nice to find a brand that I identified with and believed in,” she says of the company that now sponsors her. “Their variety of products really sold me.” The professional sand volleyball season is grueling. Players’ bodies are in constant recovery mode. “I take the oils every day, and then after practice I use the inflammatory recovery,” Urango says. “Especially with my shoulder and my knee, because I’m jumping a lot and I use an overhead swing.” She also uses it to help her fall asleep and plans to continue everyday use after her career is over. Urango is dogged in her chase for an AVP finals victory, a goal that will be preceded by a series of choices that extend her career long enough to make it happen. “Using [cbdMD’s] products is going to help me,” she says. “I think it will make it that much easier for me to keep playing.”

olf and tradition are nearly synonymous. So, 17-year PGA Tour veteran Bubba Watson’s big announcement in May that he had officially agreed to a partnership with cbdMD came despite a tour warning that plainly discouraged golfers from using CBD. The organization clarified that CBD was not among its list of banned substances, but suggested that CBD products could contain banned substances even if they claimed not to. “As with all supplements, the PGA Tour warns players who inquire about CBD products that there is no guarantee a supplement contains what is listed on the label,” according to the statement. Watson, who announced his partnership on a video streamed through Twitter, didn’t appear worried about the PGA’s warning. To claim that a CBD product might include more than what is on the label is to paint with very broad strokes. Such a claim can technically be made about anything. “Our products undergo additional and extensive independent third-party lab testing so we can confidently guarantee our products are pure and safe,” the website claims. “I’ve personally felt the benefits of cbdMD’s products,” Watson says. “cbdMD is the safest on the market and I am proud to partner with them to help millions feel better.” Besides his sometimes-animated personality and flair on the course, Watson is known for being one of the most powerful drivers in golf. In other words, he can hit the ball really, really far (over 350 yards to be exact). But the left-hander recently turned 40. He’s a two-time Masters tournament winner, but Watson refuses to believe his best days on the course are behind him. He told CNN Sports’ Don Riddell, “I’ve got at least eight more years of having a shot at winning tournaments.” He hopes CBD can “create longevity in his game.” Golf is simultaneously a game of concentration and endurance. Your body needs to be relaxed and rested. It seems the perfect sport for a supplement like CBD, and Watson appears happy to be at the forefront of a movement. After Tiger Woods won the Masters this April, rumors swirled around the game that the gum he chomped throughout the tournament—not typically part of his routine—may have included CBD. S

CBD-INFUSED MAPLE BOURBON COCKTAIL (PAGE 46)
CBD-INFUSED RECIPES FOR A SUPER CHILL FALL
Whether you’re
mourning the end of summer or celebrating the
crisp air and foliage, autumn calls for cozy recipes full of warm flavors. Here, we’ve taken the flavors of fall and infused them with CBD for a tasty, enjoyable way to get your daily serving. Unflavored CBD oil (not to be confused with “natural” flavor) is easily incorporated into a variety of recipes, from a creamy onion dip that will win game day to a relaxing cocktail imbued with the taste of autumn.
Y
OU WON’T FIND a specific amount of CBD to include in the recipes because that depends on you, the concentration of the CBD oil you’re using, and whether you’re planning to enjoy each of these recipes individually or as part of a multi-course CBD dinner (which sounds awesome, by the way). All the recipes have been tested with unflavored CBD oils ranging in concentration from 100 mg to 1000 mg per 30 ml and can withstand a large variety in the number of drops used. As always, consult your
CBD CARAMELIZED ONION DIP
This caramelized onion dip is a little more work than mixing a packet with sour cream, but the payoff is big. The Greek yogurt gives it a healthier spin and provides a great base for CBD oil. It’s worth it to cook the onions low and slow until they’re sweet and almost jammy. Start to finish: 1 hour Servings: 4 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil 3 large yellow onions (about 2 pounds), roughly chopped 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon sugar 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves 1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt 4 personal servings unflavored CBD oil

Heat butter or oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions, salt and sugar. Once the onions have started to soften, reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are super soft and golden brown. Mix in the garlic and thyme and cook for another 10 minutes (about 40 minutes total). Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl to cool. Once cool, stir in the yogurt and CBD oil until thoroughly incorporated. Serve with veggies and/or chips.

PAN-SEARED BEEF TENDERLOIN WITH CBD-INFUSED HERB BUTTER
PASTA WITH CBD-INFUSED KALE, ARUGULA AND PISTACHIO PESTO Pesto is one of our summertime go-tos, but to give the staple a cool-weather spin, substitute the warm weather basil for cold-hardy and nutritious kale and arugula. Pistachios provide a nice alternative to pine nuts, and CBD oil incorporates seamlessly. Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 4 12 ounces dry pasta 2 cups roughly chopped arugula 2 cups roughly chopped kale
Start to finish: 90 minutes Servings: 4 1 stick unsalted butter, softened 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (use a mix of woody herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage and oregano) 3 cloves minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for steak 4 personal servings unflavored CBD oil 4 beef tenderloin fillets (about 8 to 10 ounces each) Freshly ground pepper
3/4 cup grated Parmesan
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup shelled pistachios
Put the butter, herbs, garlic, salt and CBD oil in a stand mixer and mix on medium-low speed until fully incorporated (or you can mix in a bowl with a wooden spoon). Transfer the soft herb butter to a large piece of wax or parchment paper and roll up, twisting the ends to create a tight log. Refrigerate for at least an hour until firm (or store in a resealable freezer bag and freeze for up to six months). For the steak, preheat the oven to 425°F. Season the steak generously on both sides with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Heat the olive oil in a cast iron pan over high heat until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 2 minutes per side. Turn off the stove and transfer the pan with the steaks to the hot oven. Bake for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on thickness, until cooked through (to be sure, use an instant read thermometer—at 125°F the steak will be rare; 145°F is medium). Remove from the oven, transfer to a cutting board and top with a slice of CBD-infused herb butter. Allow the meat to rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Serve topped with another slice of herb butter.

Beef tenderloin is prized for its, well, tenderness. But it’s so lean that it tends to lack the bold flavor of fattier cuts. That’s why topping it with herb butter—and even better, CBD-infused herb butter—is the ultimate way to level up an already special fall meal.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil; cook the pasta according to package instructions. Set aside a bit of the pasta water, drain the pasta and return to the pot. Meanwhile, make the pesto: Blend arugula, kale, Parmesan, pistachios, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, oregano, and salt in a blender or food processor until smooth. Adjust the seasonings to taste. Add the CBD oil and blend once more until fully incorporated. Toss the pesto with the cooked pasta, adding 1 tablespoon of reserved pasta water at a time if you wish to loosen the sauce slightly. Serve immediately.

CBD-INFUSED DARK CHOCOLATE PUMPKIN SPICE PEANUT BUTTER CUPS You knew it was coming: Pumpkin Spice Something or Other. What can we say? The stuff is good. And perfect for fall. Here, we’ve mixed a hefty dose of the warm spices with dark chocolate, and CBD oil with peanut butter to create easy DIY peanut butter cups that are far better than anything you can buy in a store. CBD dosing can vary widely depending on how many cups you plan to eat, but when testing, we aimed for each cup to contain around 5 mg (because who can eat just one?). Start to finish: 35 minutes Servings: 18 peanut butter cups 10 ounces dark chocolate (use chips or roughly chopped chocolate) 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter 3/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 personal servings CBD oil Line a mini muffin pan with 18 paper liners. Set aside. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl and microwave, stirring every 30 seconds or so, until chocolate is fully melted, smooth and shiny. Stir in pumpkin pie spice until fully and evenly incorporated. Spoon a heaping teaspoon of melted chocolate into each muffin liner. Gently tap the pan on a flat surface so it spreads to coat the entire bottom of each liner. In a separate bowl, mix the peanut butter, vanilla extract, CBD oil and confectioners’ sugar until smooth. (If you want each peanut butter cup to have 5 mg CBD oil and your CBD oil has a concentration of 1000 mg/30 ml then that would be 54 drops, for example.) Take about 1/2 teaspoon of the peanut butter mixture, roll into a ball and flatten slightly before putting in the center of a muffin liner. Repeat with remaining peanut butter. Spoon remaining chocolate over peanut butterfilled muffin liners, making sure to fully cover the peanut butter. Shake and tap lightly. Put in the freezer to set for about 10 minutes. Store in the fridge for up to one month.

CBD-INFUSED MAPLE BOURBON COCKTAIL
This cocktail captures the flavors of fall in a glass: bourbon, apple, maple and even a delicate touch of cardamom. Mixing the CBD oil into the maple syrup first helps it mix in more fully, though it’s OK if some oil floats to the top. This is a fun place to experiment with flavored CBD oils, as the taste and aroma can add another interesting element to your cocktail. Start to finish: 5 minutes Servings: 1 cocktail 1/2 ounce maple syrup 1 personal dose unflavored CBD oil 2 ounces bourbon 1 ounce apple juice Pinch of cardamom (optional) Mix the maple syrup with the CBD oil (if you want a 10 mg serving and are using a CBD oil with a concentration of 1000 mg/30 ml, that would be 6 drops). Pour the maple syrup into a cocktail shaker and add the bourbon, apple juice, cardamom and ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass and serve immediately. Garnish with a thin apple slice. S MARTINELLI is a food and travel writer based in Michigan.

N EVERY NEW INDUSTRY, THERE MUST BE PIONEERS—companies that chart new territory and build a foundation for others that follow. In the world of CBD, Kannaway has strived to be one of those companies since its inception. Kannaway was the first direct selling business to launch a CBD product and its parent company became America’s first publicly traded cannabis company in March 2009. It currently has more than 200,000 shareholders. “Everywhere you go, you can see CBD products and people talking about hemp or cannabis,” says Blake Schroeder, Kannaway’s CEO. “Eight or nine years ago that wasn’t the case.” Today, Kannaway and its brand ambassadors are leaders in nutraceutical hemp-based CBD sales. Kannaway reported revenue of $46.8 million for 2018, a 200 percent jump from 2018 that landed its parent company on the Direct Selling News Global 100, a ranking of top-earning companies in the industry. And with the global CBD market projected to reach $16 billion by 2025, the company is positioning itself
for future growth. Kannaway has met consumers in the U.S., South America, and Europe, as well as Japan, a newly opened market for the company. As a direct selling company, Kannaway guides a network of brand ambassadors who are independent distributors of the Kannaway products. Each brand ambassador not only works with their own customers and acts as a mentor for new brand ambassadors in their own business, but they also get the guidance and affiliate benefits of working with the global Kannaway brand and reputable product line. CBD products are a great fit for the direct selling business model because the industry is based on face-to-face sales and personal relationships. Also called “social selling,” direct selling helps those new to CBD products learn about them from someone they know and trust. In this way, the benefits of Kannaway’s CBD products are shared from one person to another. Along the way, Kannaway brand ambassadors can join millions of other direct selling business owners on the entrepreneurial journey toward financial rewards and time freedom.

PROVING THE NEED
Titus points to more than 10,000 articles the National Institute of Health has received citing endocannabinoids. Today, the mounting scientific evidence of cannabinoid effectiveness for users, combined with the growing demand for quality products by consumers, has translated into an expanding product offering at Kannaway. From CBD oil and oral applicators to personal care products and even CBD pet products, Kannaway carefully selects products that are safe and effective. It was also the first to market a CBD gum, with a patent on chewing gum as a delivery method for CBD. Other popular products include CBD tea, coffee, and essential oil blends. All of these products are designed to operate with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a process most people aren’t even aware exists. But it’s been the subject of multiple studies and is a hot topic for discussion in medical communities as consumer demand for cannabis increases. But, despite the substantial scientific discussion surrounding the human body’s endocannabinoid system, the FDA is still wrestling with the notion of a self-regulatory system in the human body. In the meantime, research has led to a medication that treats epileptic seizures, and further work on myeloid pain receptors is underway thanks to an abundance of anecdotal evidence by people using cannabis to control pain.

Kannaway was instrumental in breaking new legislative ground in countries like Brazil and Mexico, and it’s focused on doing the same in the U.S. In May of this year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration gathered for hearings on cannabis-derived compounds. Dr. Stuart Titus, president and CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc., Kannaway’s parent company, was invited to share his expertise. Titus says he’s seen firsthand how amazed the FDA is at the increase in CBD use, the varied reasons people are trying it, and the remarkable results they’re reporting. Of course, not everyone who testified at the FDA hearings was extolling the benefits of cannabis. The FDA must consider the potential for abuse or illegal activity. “The nice thing about CBD is that you really can’t abuse it,” Titus says. “Even large amounts have proven to be very safe…. The tremendous safety profile—I think that’s one of the first things the FDA is certainly looking at.” Titus hopes to see Congress develop a regulatory pathway for CBD products to be sold throughout the country, which would benefit American farmers and entrepreneurs while making CBD more available to consumers. “Many crops—cornmeal, soybeans—you’ve got your one income stream, and that’s pretty much it,” Titus says. “With hemp, you’ve got applications in biofuels, bioplastics, biocomposites, and building construction materials, also hemp batteries and supercapacitors, and of course your hemp foods as well…. This represents a tremendous value for the overall American economy.” Titus sees CBD inspiring the entrepreneurial spirit of the public too: “It’s the next great growth industry in the history of America.”

In fact, Titus says many of us may be walking around with a deficiency that only cannabinoids can fill. “People throughout the Kannaway network and throughout the globe are really finding that 50 mg of CBD does help with a much higher level of overall health and wellness,” Titus says. “It seems that this will allow us to relax a little bit and deal with the stresses of life to a much better degree.” Schroeder can attest to these results for himself: “I get the best rest I ever had in my life with CBD products, and that’s made a major impact on me. I’m on airplanes all the time. I was taking a sleep medication, and this has just been a total game-changer for me.” As examples of how powerful the impact can be, Schroeder points to people with some of the busiest and most physically demanding schedules: professional athletes. “If you pay attention to the PGA Tour right now, you can see several of the most successful PGA Tour players are taking CBD,” Schroeder says. “The reason is, it takes out that little bit of nervousness you might get and helps you to perform. I think that we were undernourished before, and I think that we’re nourishing our bodies now the way that we should.”

Kannaway still formulates most of its products to include all three oils. “I think we’re maybe one of two companies on the planet that does it that way,” Schroeder says. “Our best products are the ones that are formulated from that original green, blue and gold oil.”

Kannaway products have received a certification seal from the U.S. Hemp Authority. CHANGING THE GAME
Pro athletes aren’t just customers for Kannaway. In fact, one of their most outspoken brand ambassadors is Nick Lowery, a longtime kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs who has, in retirement, served as a legislative aide for four U.S. senators and three presidents. As the first pro athlete to graduate from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Lowery has spent decades working with lawmakers and government officials on behalf of public well-being. In his role as director of Kannaway Sports, Lowery spearheads the education of fellow brand ambassadors and consumers on the power and impact of CBD. “It’s not simply anecdotal,” he says. “The overwhelming science shows a complete lack of toxicity and a tremendous amount of benefit in CBD. “I’ve witnessed now, in the last two years as director of Kannaway Sports, tremendous benefits to Amy Van Dyken, who was paralyzed from the waist down, the first woman to win four gold medals in the Olympics. And now for the first time since being paralyzed, she’s swimming 1,000 meters.” Lowery also notes Kannaway fans Goose Gossage, a New York Yankees Hall of Fame pitcher with neuropathy in his feet and hands, and Eric Dickerson, a Hall of Fame former Los Angeles Rams running back who uses the products for pain management and sleep. The world is beginning to catch up to the anecdotal evidence through what Lowery calls “an avalanche of double-blind science.” But that doesn’t mean the FDA will suddenly move quickly. “It takes time,” Lowery says. “It takes time because pharmaceutical companies have invested billions and billions of dollars in products, particularly opioids—one of the worst examples in our history that have covered over health issues…. And as we know, so many pharmaceuticals, in solving one problem, create others. “This battle is being won by CBD slowly and measurably.”
UPPING THE STANDARDS
In their best effort to go above and beyond potential regulations, companies such as Kannaway are already creating and selling products with exacting standards. “One of the first things we did in terms of innovation in the industry was to become the first company to triple lab test our products,” Titus says. This means the plants are tested at the farm during the initial extraction process for CBD content, mold, residual pesticides and other contaminants. Then when the product
comes into the U.S., more tests measure whether the correct concentration of CBD is still present, as well as a repeat of the toxicity tests. Finally, the finished product is examined to make sure it’s still pure after the laboratory and processing phases. “This range of tests ensures customers that we’re providing a serious and sound product that has what we say it does,” Titus says. “We want to make sure it’s very safe. That means if we say we have 17 percent CBD, then we have 17 percent CBD in our product—well, we might wind up having 17.4 percent.” Kannaway products have received a certification seal from the U.S. Hemp Authority, and standards are overseen by the Hemp Roundtable, a consortium of hemp manufacturers and others in the industry. This kind of ethical responsibility and scientific scrutiny is vital to Kannaway’s mission to provide natural, safe, and effective CBD and herbal blends to its customers. But it also allows for confident support of the nonprofit charity ECHO (named after the founding principles of education, collaboration, and hope), which is committed to supporting individuals and families who want to seek the therapeutic properties of CBD and ultimately improve the lives of their loved ones. ECHO works through spreading awareness and making sure everyone has access to an extensive library of clinical studies and a network of CBD-friendly physicians. ECHO currently supports more than 100 families in their journey to learn more about and gain access to cannabinoids.
LOOKING AHEAD
As Kannaway moves into a future of more awareness and access to CBD for consumers, it looks to not only expand its product line, but to lead the way in regulatory and scientific innovation. “There are over 130 different cannabinoid profiles in an industrial hemp plant,” Schroeder says. “I think you’re going to hear people starting to talk about CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), and some of the benefits of those ingredients. And I think our company will look to develop products that have CBD, but also will start looking at some of the other cannabis profiles that are yet to be fully developed.” Titus says they’re also studying new and different ways of delivering CBD: “We believe there are great applications in the topical market that have not really been fully explored through the industry. We’re also looking at uses of different oils, which may target different systems of the body. Internationally, Kannaway and Medical Marijuana, Inc. have been at the forefront of the CBD trend for years—well ahead of many other similar companies. That means they have not only opened markets in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan, but also changed the way these countries view

First to develop strict quality standards for cannabis products,
CBD usage. Much like in the U.S., hemp-derived products were illegal in many of the markets where the businesses now operates. Company executives, including Titus, were instrumental in helping citizens to change laws and open the doors to import quality, hemp-derived CBD products. When launching in new markets, Kannaway may even develop regional regulation-compliant products. The European Union, for example, has a thriving organic foods market valued at more than $40 billion—a market ripe for hemp-derived products. In 2018, Kannaway was the first to legally offer hemp-based CBD wellness products in the European Union and a few non-EU countries for import— totaling over 30 countries launched simultaneously. The latest to open, in May 2019, was Bulgaria, where Kannaway is the first-ever company authorized to sell hemp-derived CBD products. To meet demand in these markets and stay compliant with varying health regulations, Kannaway developed its Pure Gold CBD oil—a popular product in all markets today. With an updated website and new back office for Kannaway brand ambassadors released in 2019, plus recordsetting events like Hemp for Humanity held in Austria with 1,900 attendees, Kannaway is on a rising trajectory right alongside the growing CBD market. “When I first was thinking about coming to the company, this was three or four years ago before everybody thought cannabis was really cool,” Schroeder says. “Someone told me to look around the room at my computer, or the TV, or the clothes I’m wearing, and ask myself: Will any of those spaces be larger businesses five years from now than they are today? And the answer is I don’t know. I don’t know whether the TV business will be bigger or whether the computer business will be bigger. “But you could ask anybody on the planet today, ‘Is the cannabis business going to be bigger five years from now than it is today?’ I think you would get almost a unanimous yes.” A growing number of states in the U.S. have legalized recreational or medical cannabis markets—33 for medical use so far, plus 10 more for recreational use. That number is likely to continue rising as more consumers in the U.S. come to agree with full federal legalization of cannabis. These customers have some of the highest disposable income— they’re an average age of 40, have higher education, and are more likely than non-consumers to be employed full-time. The picture of today’s CBD user is a far cry from the person most opponents to legalized cannabis have been told are using the products. Companies like Kannaway are fighting this misinformation campaign that has kept cannabis illegal until recent years with science, support and a sound business model. S

after treatment, hospital stay after hospital stay—there were no answers, only more debilitating back pain for Adam Grossman’s father, Morton, or as he was affectionately called, “Papa.” Then came the worst news: hospice. A pain specialist told the younger Grossman that if Papa wasn’t able to get out of bed within the next week or so, he never would. Desperation prompted action. A friend in California suggested a DIY “pain bomb” she saw in a cannabis dispensary. Armed with YouTube videos, natural coconut oil and $500 worth of high-end cannabis, Grossman went to work, using every ounce of the cannabis to make the strongest concoction possible. “I knew it had to be super potent, so I tested it on myself, just to make sure it didn’t burn the skin off or anything,” Grossman says. “Then I had to convince my father.” After Grossman rubbed the mixture on his father’s back, Papa was able to get out of bed for the first time in more than two weeks. Then he was able to walk again. He was soon discharged from hospice and lived another two years nearly pain-free. “To witness that and see how the balm helped him manage his pain—really, saved him—that was transformative,” Grossman says. Much of his father’s final years were spent with his loyal, red-nosed pit bull, Barkley. They napped together. They watched TV together. They were inseparable. Today, Grossman is the founder and CEO of a company honoring his father’s story: Papa & Barkley. Its first product, Releaf Balm, is an evolved version of the same ointment that transformed Papa’s life.
ADAM GROSSMAN
BUT THAT WAS ONLY THE START.
“We’re just now beginning to understand, scientifically, what CBD is capable of—how it has been proven, through the trial work of Epidiolex—led by the head of our scientific advisory board—to help with epilepsy in children,” Grossman says. “As awareness and availability of CBD and cannabis wellness products continue to expand globally, and more scientific study, it’s going to open up possibilities we can’t even fathom right now.” *** Papa & Barkley first launched in June 2016 in Eureka, California—a city within Humboldt County, the longtime, unequivocal epicenter of cannabis-growing in the U.S. The company is focused on a singular mission: unlocking the power of the plant to improve people’s lives. The brand offers nearly 40 products including tinctures, balms, capsules, patches and massage oils. They are market leaders in their categories. Given that success, along with the 2018 Farm Bill, Papa & Barkley began crafting a plan to create hemp-based CBD products to expand its brand on a national level. The company’s CBD-only branch launched in September 2018 in Colorado, and now creates several of the industry’s top-selling balms. Through online retail, products are selling in all 50 states. “That bill being passed has created a Gold Rush mentality, we’ve seen many companies start up trying to

make that quick buck,” says Doug Jones, the chief retail officer for Papa & Barkley, who has more than 20 years of experience in the wellness product industry. “That’s why we are so transparent with how we create our products. The consumer needs to be able to separate the quality brands from those that are not in the business for the right reason. The customer needs to know what they are buying and putting on or in their bodies exceeds the quality they expect, and frankly deserve, from premium wellness brands.” To that end, all Papa & Barkley products undergo multiple tests using third-party, California-approved testing labs. This testing includes a full cannabinoid and terpene screen, which ensures that the hemp product meets the CBD content on the product label and also complies with federal laws regarding THC content. The testing also validates what’s not in the product, which includes toxin screening of 60-plus pesticides, 20 solvents, heavy metals, microbials and mycotoxins. “When we were first forming the company, we decided our core value was quality over margin,” Grossman says. “Our infusion method is simple, but it isn’t easy, and it’s more expensive than what I am sure some other companies are doing, but that commitment to quality is what we feel leads to these life-changing experiences.”

Who takes CBD?
True to its original product, the company continues to employ a clean, all-natural infusion process for its tinctures, capsules, balms and other topical CBD products. At the core of all of its products is the infused oil that uses only three ingredients—water, hemp flowers and either fractionated coconut oil or MCT oil—with very limited heat and processing. A stark difference from other extraction methods that use extreme temperature and solvents to pull apart what nature created. “This plant is magical, I know that sounds hippie, but it takes away pain and anxiety, and helps many people be the best versions of themselves,” Grossman says. “It’s changing the world, literally, and we want to be the best in class.” *** From the start, Grossman wanted to run a specific, socially conscious, consumer- and employee-friendly enterprise. As of its three-year anniversary in June, Papa & Barkley employs nearly 200 people, boasts a minimum wage of $15 per hour—$17 after one year—with a 4 percent 401(k) match. Many employees own company stock. Sales have increased by roughly 11 percent per month since Grossman started the company with 125 crock pots in business partner Guy Rocourt’s garage. What does the future hold? Both Grossman and Jones believe the day is soon coming when cannabis will be legal in all 50 states. By building a wellness brand around hemp-derived CBD products, the foundation is built for them to eventually introduce all of their cannabis products to the national market.
One of the interesting aspects of the growing CBD market is its notoriously wide demographic of users. The core customer base includes people who Papa & Barkley co-founder and CEO Adam Grossman describes as managers of chronic pain, such as the elderly and those living with debilitating or incurable diseases. The company buses in more than 100 senior citizens per week from California assisted living facilities to its dispensaries. Another group is the DIY healers, often connected with yoga and massage. These people prefer to not take pharmaceutical medications. They are not necessarily battling an injury or an ailment, but just want to feel better—maybe not as sluggish, perhaps more relaxed or rested. The fastest growing demographic taking CBD is athletes. Last year, the World Anti-Doping Association removed cannabinoids from its banned ingredient list, opening the door for athlete access. “We think that the fitness side is going to bring a lot of new people in,” Grossman says. “Really, you talk about five years in this industry, and that’s a lifetime. It’s really like dog years. Look at how much this industry has changed in the last five years. It’s hard to predict exactly where the CBD side goes in the next few years. We just want to increase the velocity of acceptance, and there’s really nothing stopping that from happening.”
“As a country, I think we are embracing cannabis more and more. We’re educating also, which is crucial,” says Jones, who came to Papa & Barkley from The Vitamin Shoppe, which he most recently served as the company’s chief product and innovation officer. “CBD is helping to open that path of understanding. It’s another nutrient that benefits the body. We are clear that it’s not a miracle cure, but I think it’s the most innovative and beneficial health product of the last decade.”

For Grossman, passion is currency,
Papa & Barkley takes seriously its part in helping CBD and cannabis gain national acceptance, educating at every chance, from explaining the difference between CO2 distillate extraction to full-spectrum infusion to nutritional profiles of its products. The philosophy is simple: There is no such thing as too much transparency. “What we do isn’t easily replicable—even if you see how we do it,” Grossman says. “Our DNA, our focus from the very start was just creating the best possible wellness medicine we can. We’re a wellness brand. We are trying to help people, like my father. We’re trying to provide some relief from some of their health challenges, and literally take some of their pains away.” They seem to be doing exactly that. Legions of online testimonials attest to the effectiveness of Papa & Barkley products. Among the reviews illustrating the impact is this one from Weedmaps: “I fractured my patella over a decade ago and never received treatment because I didn’t even know the injury was so severe. It came back to bite me in the butt. This is the only stuff that has given me comfortable relief. I work in a physically demanding job and I use it daily. If I could buy it by the gallon, I would.” It’s these stories, like Grossman’s own experience with his father, that provide fuel for the often difficult task of building a successful business in a relatively unregulated environment. “I find myself looking back at my life, and so much of it played a role in preparing me for this,” Grossman says. “Without knowing it, this was what I was supposed to be doing. To take away people’s pain; to help them improve their daily lives—what could be a more rewarding experience?” S

and you’ll find more than 20 different brands and versions of cannabidiol, or CBD. Search online and that number increases tenfold. From oils to salves, powders,
gummies and basically every kind of food product you can think of, the options become overwhelming. Figuring out which CBD product you should buy is a bit like trying to read assembly instructions in a different language. The labels can be confusing or even misleading, and most people don’t understand the terms on the packaging.

YOU can find CBD these days in nearly every type of food or beverage as well as tinctures, pills, powders and more. I
When I first became interested in CBD, there was really only one well-known brand on the market. In the past five years, the industry has exploded, but regulations have been slow to follow. In the supplement world, CBD is still the Wild West in many ways, and being a consumer in this market is like showing up without your horse. As a cannabis practitioner and CBD expert, these are my three main rules for buying CBD products.

1. LOOK FOR FULL-SPECTRUM CBD.
love seeing the traction that CBD is getting. The more accessible it becomes, the more likely that the stigma associated with it will decrease. Yet, as a dietitian and a cannabis practitioner, I have to stop and question how effective or healthy products like CBD cookies can be. Sometimes foods that aren’t all that healthy are perceived as healthy because of a certain
CBD is one of many naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant. Other compounds include terpenes, flavonoids and nearly 100 cannabinoids with a variety of potential benefits. When those compounds are present in your final product, this is known as full-spectrum CBD. A growing body of research suggests that full-spectrum CBD can be more effective than CBD alone. The compounds from the whole plant work together to create what’s called the entourage effect, which is said to produce more therapeutic benefits than any of the compounds might on their own. Because regulations are still in flux, some products will be labeled broad spectrum rather than full spectrum. Broad spectrum still means that the whole plant is used but it’s likely missing a compound, either intentionally or because, when the plant was processed, it lost one of its nutrients. As regulatory measures inevitably increase, my guess is that we’ll see more broad-spectrum products, but both can be equally beneficial choices.

the health halo. For example, gluten-free pizzas and organic cookies: The term gluten free or organic doesn’t automatically make these popular foods healthy. The health halo applies to CBD too. CBD is touted for its anti-inflammatory properties, but when it’s paired with an inflammatory food such as white flour cookies, are you essentially negating those benefits? What about the amount of CBD or cannabinoids that can burn off when baking? Furthermore, CBD is almost always intended for consistent use. If you’re buying caramel CBD chocolate bars, are you going to eat to introduce CBD or switch it up every once in a while, but it’s important to remember that it’s a supplement, like fish oil or your daily vitamin gummy, not just a fun snack.

’90s, industrial hemp was tested in contaminated fields near Chernobyl—the site of a devastating Soviet nuclear plant disaster—and considered successful at removing heavy metals from the soil. Sounds great, right? Of course, but little is known about what happens to those metals and contaminants once they are absorbed by the plant. For this reason, it’s smart to look for CBD derived from organically grown hemp. This ensures the plants that become your CBD are filled with only healthy nutrients. Keep in mind that a product can
be made from organically grown hemp without having the USDA organic label on it so read the details on the label to confirm.
3. REQUIRE TRANSPARENCY FROM YOUR CBD COMPANY.
Transparency is crucial in any industry, but especially in a relatively unregulated one like CBD. Making an informed decision means learning about where your hemp was grown, but also how the final product was derived.

learning about where your hemp was grown , but also how the final product was derived.” You should be able to find this information easily through a certificate of analysis (COA). Reputable companies will share their COAs with potential buyers, either on their website or with printed copies of the report in the store. The COA is a lab report that analyzes and measures the nutrient breakdown of the hemp and CBD. Just as you read the ingredients list when grocery shopping, you should also review the COA to ensure the product actually contains what it claims to contain. Most COAs will show an ID column, a weight percentage column and a concentration column. If it’s a full-spectrum product, you want to see most of the rows in the columns filled with numbers. If you want to take it a step further and confirm the amount of CBD listed on the product label matches the amount listed in the COA, match the milligrams in the serving to what’s listed so you can accurately compare. refresh Club Hemp Stem Cell Collagen Face Cream Club Hemp has whipped up an antiwrinkle, anti-aging cream that combines CBD with collagen and the stem cells of a rare Swiss apple: Uttwiler Spätlauber. Club Hemp says the stem cells of the apple “show extraordinary regenerative properties,” perhaps enabling a user to keep the dermatologist away. Former first lady Michele Obama is said to be a devotee of a facial serum packed with these apple stem cells. Club Hemp says its mixture of apple stem cells, CBD and collagen (at a price of $49.95) works to generate new skin cells, remove wrinkles and tighten skin, furnishing a “mini-facelift.”
Made by Hemp – Hemp CBD Patch You’ve heard of CBD oil and capsules. Now, Made by Hemp has rolled out a CBD patch that aims to relieve pain and inflammation. Customers report the patch helps manage symptoms of arthritis and other conditions that cause chronic pain. The patch is especially handy for people who forget to take their CBD supplements, according to the company, because it provides up to 12 hours of release, as opposed to a single application of a topical cream or salve. The patch ($17.99) contains CBD oil as well as a proprietary blend of botanical extracts.
Weller CBD-Infused Sparkling Water Sparkling water continues to create an ever-flowing fountain of demand among U.S. consumers. Latching onto this trend, Colorado-based Weller recently expanded its portfolio of CBD food and beverage products to include CBD-infused sparkling water in three fruit flavors: watermelon, black cherry and tangerine. Each can ($4.99) promises 25 mg of CBD. Weller says its sparkling water helps “you reconnect with the best version of yourself by reducing anxiety and stress.” The product contains no THC, no calories, no gluten and no GMOs.
Evo Hemp – Hemp Hearts + Extract You might say that Evo Hemp is getting to the heart of the matter when it comes to health. The Colorado company recently launched Evo Hemp Hearts + CBD Extract, which it bills as “the most nutritionally complete way” to get a daily helping of hemp oil, protein, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. One bag of these hemp hearts, or seeds, sells for $17. Each serving supplies 15 mg of CBD, 10 grams of protein, and 10 grams of the two omegas. The CBD-infused, nutty-flavored shelled hemp seeds can be sprinkled into salads, soups and smoothies.
Cloud SCOUT Mint Cookie CBD Scrub Few of us can resist the temptation of Girl Scout cookies. But if you want to savor these sugary treats without counting calories, you might opt for Cloud CBD’s SCOUT Mint Cookie CBD Scrub ($42). Of course, you wouldn’t want to eat the scrub. Nonetheless, the Girl Scout-inspired body scrub gives a hint of the mint chocolate aroma of Thin Mints. Cloud CBD says the scrub encourages relaxation with 100 mg of CBD; improves circulation with cinnamon and clove oils; energizes with peppermint oil; and moisturizes with cocoa and shea butters, sweet almond oil and coconut oil.

’VE BEEN USING CBD consistently since November 2017. I take drops orally, and I use a salve and roller ball topically. I currently take 12 mg of drops daily, use my salve at least once daily and use my roller ball as needed. I’ve had osteoarthritis since my 20s and have used almost every over-the-counter medication to help relieve the pain and discomfort from that, with varying degrees of success. In 2017, when my toes started to hurt, I suspected that I may have developed gout. This was not the case. As my physician put it, “I have good news and not-so-good news. Good news: No gout. Not-sogood news: You have rheumatoid arthritis.” He then gave me a referral to a rheumatologist. But I tore up

Where the salve and roller ball have that kind of effect, the drops took about a week before I noticed that I had less painful joints, even before the application of the salve, and more range of motion and mobility in my hands and feet.
