This organization deconstructs buildings throughout New Orleans and sells the salvaged materials back to the community for a lower than market value price. This organization has also taken over the secondary role of community center. The current building housing the OCBC is a storage warehouse that does not have adequate space or facilities. This new design splits the two functions of the building up into two interlocking Ls that create a dialogue between the warehouse and the community center. A water collection system falls in the void between the Ls to allow for natural cooling of the courtyard as well as providing gray water to the building.

This Culinary Institute is located on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in New Orleans which is on its way to becoming the self proclaimed culinary district of the city. The building is clad in what appears to be heavy masonry, but it is actually translucent concrete to give the illusion of a solid mass while allowing light to penetrate the building. The heavy exterior structure is pulled into two halves, exposing the steel framing and glass interior of the mass. Bridges span between the two buildings and four tower structures as if they are strands of gum being stretched between two blocks. The program is divided into three categories: learning, interacting, and working. The learning mass is located at the far end of the lot and contains all of the teaching kitchens and support spaces for the culinary institute. The interacting program is contained in the interstitial space between the two stone masses. This space allows for informal interactions between the students, teachers, and customers. The mass on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard contains all of the public components of the program.

i. llight. is a new cementitious material that combines resins and cement to create a translucent panel. The resin inserts in the panel allow for 18% to 20% transparency. The tra panels are insulated, so additional insulation is not required. The panels can be poured pa on site or precast depending on the cost variabilities in the fabrication. This material allows daylight to enter the building while giving the impression of a solid massive exterior. At night the panels appear to glow from the interior lights of the building.

The French Quarter Public Library is located in the heart of New Orleans. The program includes spaces of book stacks as well as a media center, cafe, internet cafe, and outdoor components. Hidden courtyards and mysterious side alleys can be found all over the French Quarter. This design opens up these outdoor spaces for public use by creating several courtyards that are open at most times of the day. The outdoor spaces correspond to courtyards surrounding the site in order to extend the negative space of the French Quarter into the building. Each courtyard has a different character corresponding to its program adjacency. Circulation through the building begins in a triple height atrium. One must travel vertically through a series of angled stairs to mimic hiking up a mountain to discover new spaces. The strip scheme is carried through the landscaping and facade of the building. The facade becomes dynamic with a push and pull organization of ribbon windows. This provides large light shelves to protect the books inside from direct light. The large window sills became a place to rest a book and the wall surrounding the windows becomes bookshelves.

DO! nut

The DO! Nut was the winning project of a week long design/build competition at Tulane School of Architecture call A-Week. Another student and I lead a team of students in this competition. The design and construction of the DO! Nut, came from the desire to create a singular, didactic form that would capture the spirit of the urban soapbox while adding the idea of collective sharing. The design is based on mobility which is clear in its circular form. The wheel is a familiar form to everyone, so people instinctively know what to do with the DO! Nut based on its shape. Its form invites an equitable discourse and provides a stage for reinterpretation of soapbox expression. The project works not only on a localized level but also reaches a larger social network through Twitter. The history of the DO! Nut and its trail are left with mentions and hash tags of where its been and where its going to be on this web site. This design has the potential to become a prototype for a mobile classroom that can be used in any setting.

The San Lorenzo neighborhood in Rome, Italy originally housed many artists and craftsman, but as many students have moved into the area restaurants and bars have taken over the old workshops. The area is surrounded by many formal education institutions, but there is no place for informal education. This site gives back to the community what has been taken from them by providing a community center, a library, and artists workshops with corresponding housing units above each programmatic element. The design is based on the form of a geode with a hard exterior shell that encases a crystallized interior which functions as a two-story glass encased gallery in the building. Three paths are carved out of the geode to allow access to the interior courtyard where a market and extension of the ground floor programs take place. The circulation is based on a cycle of informal education that includes a curiosity about an idea which leads to exploration in the library and then to the application of this idea in the workshops and finally interaction in the community center which can spark new curiosities to start the cycle over.

NOCCA

The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts(NOCCA) is located at the Mississippi River along a key connection road to the artist corridor of St. Claude Avenue. This building acts as a gallery presence for the school along St. Claude as well as a welcome center to the school. The very long narrow site allowed for the creation of many courtyards where local vegetation could grow. The building draws the occupant back towards the river through a series of indoor and outdoor spaces including an art gallery, restaurant, flexible community room, a cafe, classrooms, a vegetable garden, a farmers and arts market, and finally a restaurant where the culinary students are able to showcase their work. The spaces encourage interaction between the school and the community around it.
