Exhibit Guide

Current Exhibit

Let’s

We all need play in our lives. Without it, there would be no contrast from the normal rituals of everyday living. Since recorded history, the act of play has always been an important aspect of children’s lives. Play is a form of education and toys can stimulate the imagination, encourage problem solving and aid in social interaction. The toy reflects all aspects of popular culture, including fashion, architecture, folklore, daily life rituals and traditions. Toys that attract my eye approach fantasy and whimsy like the exaggerated facial images of Punch, clowns, anthropomorphic animals, nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters. With few exceptions, the antique toys displayed are from the era named “The Golden Age of Toys,” dating from 1880-1920. For children and adults alike, the toy can transport the mind from reality to fantasy play and recall past memories or create new ones. -Dolph Gotelli, Curator and Designer
