The 2013-2014 Mission & Ministry offering, “Done in Love,” not only provides financial support for our ministries but offers educational resources to strengthen CBFNC’s identity among partner churches and individuals. While the world often associates Christians with anger, judgment and narrow-mindedness, Cooperative Baptists have always focused on the love, mercy and the grace of God. We believe “they will know we are Christians by our love.” Our mission, bringing Baptists of North Carolina together for Christ-centered ministries, is needed as much today as when we were founded. The way we go about it – in love – is equally critical in our time. Stop by CBFNC’s table in the Exhibit Hall to pick up materials and learn more.
General Assembly Offering The CBFNC Mission and Ministry Offering supports a wide variety of ministries in our state and beyond. One of the ministries highlighted in this year’s emphasis, “Done in Love,” is campus ministry in North Carolina.

2014 General Assembly features Ken Medema, Larry Hovis
For four decades, Ken Medema has inspired people through storytelling and music. Though blind from birth, Ken sees and hears with heart and mind, custom designing every musical moment of his performance with brilliant improvisation that defies description. Ken will be taking part in both Friday evening and Saturday morning worship. Larry Hovis has been Executive Coordinator of CBF of North Carolina since 2004. His responsibilities including bringing together the diverse parts of CBFNC into a coherent and efficient whole to accomplish our purpose of “bringing Baptists of North Carolina together for Christ-centered ministry.”
We do not have room to seat everyone at the same time. After you finish your meal, please offer someone else your seat at the table.
Children’s Assembly
A fun learning time for children is provided by advance registration only. Drop-off and pick-up will take place in the hallway outside of room 217. Children’s Assembly will take place on a secured wing of First, Greensboro. Friday 12:00 – 5:00pm during Ministry Workshop Sessions: Preschool and Children (5th grade and younger) 5:00 – 6:20pm children are to be picked up by their parents to eat dinner 6:30 – 8:30pm during Evening Worship: Preschool only (kindergarten and younger)

Ministerial Transitions Team
CBFNC is pleased to announce the creation of a new team to work with Jack Causey and our Regional Coordinators to assist churches and ministers experiencing leadership transition. These “Ministerial Transition Facilitators” will be available to churches to help them in the following ways: • Explain the various “Options for the Interim” when there is a pastoral vacancy and refer them to potential interim ministers • Provide orientation, training and/or coaching/ consultation for search committees and congregations in the interim period • In collaboration with Jack Causey and the CBFNC office, provide names of potential candidates for ministerial vacancies We are delighted that the following persons, who bring a wealth of experience in diverse roles, will be serving as our initial Ministerial Transition Facilitators: Mike Cogdill, Buies Creek Terry Hamrick, Asheville Mike Queen, Winston-Salem Please see the CBFNC website, www.cbfnc.org, for more information, including how to contact this team.

is an ecumenical continuing education program for experienced pastors. While sensitive to the stages of learning, Tony respects the intelligence of those engaged in weekly Bible study. Therefore, he doesn’t avoid difficult texts or “dumb down” the lessons. A broader scope of the Bible is studied throughout the year since the texts come from the Revised Common Lectionary. “In the beginning, a box of stationery and envelopes was worthy of consideration. The fledgling fellowship was forced at first to ‘live off the land.’ A few miles down University Parkway from North Point Boulevard lies Winston-Salem’s Fifth Street and the First Baptist Church. Today a plaque designates a small, secondfloor Sunday School room as the original home of Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina.”

Significant relationships with our partner North Carolina divinity schools (Campbell, Duke Baptist House of Studies, Gardner-Webb and Wake Forest) and other divinity schools out-of-state introduces faculty, staff and students of these schools to CBFNC as friend and partner. Scholars who receive funding participate in events with CBFNC, graduate from divinity school and have the potential to become friends and leaders with CBFNC. During the 2012-2013 academic year, local church congregations and individuals through CBFNC provided $378,500 in theological education scholarships and support.

The Lolley Scholars
Established in 2008 by CBFNC, the fund provides financial support to Baptist students enrolled in theological education in preparation for leadership and ministry. The fund honors Randall and Lou Lolley, whose courage and commitment to integrity, freedom, and educational excellence laid the foundation for a new era in the education of men and women for ministry and service. L: Generosity is the heartbeat of our most gracious and holy God. Our heavenly Father desires for us to be generous, and today we have the opportunity to share our resources so that Christ’s presence will be seen and felt on college campuses. P: “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” L: Now, more than ever, college students need the Spirit’s guidance to assist them in loving God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength. They needs encouragement to love others as Christ loves her. So when we give, let us measure our giving high, wide and long. For as we measure by the yardstick of grace, we too will have grace abundantly measured back to us. P: “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” L: The generosity of God is fueled by God’s love through Jesus Christ. We know God because God first loved us; we know salvation because God is a Giver. We praise God for sending the presence of Christ to colleges and universities through Spirit-called ministers; a minister’s passionate hope is to share the amazing, Gospel story with God’s precious young men and women. P: “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” L: And so we are spiritual farmers of generosity, sowing far and wide, planting our “giving seeds” so that we might meet the needs of God’s present-tense Kingdom. We have been given the Seed of the Spirit; now we must sow that Seed generously and wisely. Today we can make a direct impact on the Kingdom of God by supporting campus ministers and ministries across the state of North Carolina. P: “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2013-2014 Ministry Highlights
Missions It has been a great year for missions and ministries at Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina, partnering with churches and organizations as we together joined God’s work in the world. Sixteen Local Mission Engagement Grants were given this year to CBFNC churches partnering with another church and an outside organization. Most focused on hunger issues such as backpack ministries and community gardens. Ministry with women and children, HIV/AIDs, and cross-cultural ministry were also funded. Applications for a local mission engagement grant for 2014-15 will be available after April 15, 2014, on the CBFNC website, www.cbfnc.org. CBFNC new church starts have had a successful year, with five new church starts added to the four already receiving financial support. A new Hispanic church start will begin soon in Chapel Hill. Previous CBFNC new church starts continue to flourish. CBFNC’s collaboration with CBF National has been effective in vetting, training, and coaching non-Hispanic church starts. Javier Benitez and the Companerismo Cristiano Emanuel leadership team provide leadership for the Hispanic new church starts. CBFNC and CBF will be commissioning church planters at the national General Assembly in June.
Companerismo Cristiano Emanuel continues to grow its network of churches and pastors. The Hispanic network ordained four new pastors including the ordination of their first female pastor. Leadership training continues for all pastors locally and through the Certificate through Christian Ministry offered by Campbell Divinity School’s Saturday Hispanic classes. Four new church starts have been planted, each collaborating with an established CBFNC church. Retreats for men, women, youth, children, family and mothers/daughters continue to thrive and grow. The Companerismo Cristiano Emanuel leadership team motivates and inspires the churches in this network to evangelize and minister in their communities. New church plants in Mexico and Costa Rica have been started and supported financially by the Hispanic network. Missional collaboration with CBF field personnel, both locally and globally, continues with many of our churches forming networks and ministering effectively together. In North Carolina, LaCount and Anna Anderson, Cecelia Beck, and the Hyaets community connect with many CBFNC churches. A CBFNC covenant agreement with Matt and Michelle Norman ministering in Barcelona, Spain, has resulted in developing a learning lab process which helps turn short-term mission trips into a discipleship development process for the local church. Mission partnerships with Together for Hope Arkansas, Lebanon, Ukraine and Belize continues. Construction of the Santa Elena School in Belize was completed and children now attend the school.

Leadership Development Theological Education Scholarships CBFNC annually budgets funds that are divided among the partner divinity schools (Campbell, Duke Baptist House of Studies, Gardner-Webb and Wake Forest) at $11,000 per academic year for a total of $44,000. These funds are paid directly by CBFNC to each divinity school; the divinity school is then responsible for dividing respective funds among their selected CBFNC Scholars.
Reference and Referral
CBFNC also provides scholarships for North Carolina divinity students studying outside the state. For the 2012-2013 academic year, funding totaling $39,500 was distributed to the students selected as CBFNC Scholars by the Leadership Development Ministry Council.
Churches in Transition - Over the past year we offered assistance to more than 60 churches in transition. Of the 13 churches that called a pastor, 7 came from resumes that we had offered to them. Most of the other 6 had ministers that we had offered included in their top candidates.
Through generosity of local congregations, funds contributed to the Mission Resource Plan and targeted for theological education totaled $295,000. According to church designation, partner divinity schools received these funds for use as additional theological education scholarships. CBFNC provided a GRAND TOTAL of $378,500 in theological education scholarships during the 2012-2013 academic year. CBF Days on Divinity School Campuses CBFNC collaborates each academic year with CBF National and other CBF state organizations to co-sponsor Scholar Dinners and CBF Days on divinity school campuses where CBFNC partners or has significant relationships. This collaboration provides relational and financial benefits to CBF as a whole. The message communicated to these divinity students is, “You and your divinity school are part of something BIG!” Elevating Preaching Conference “Sense of Place” was the theme for Elevating Preaching 2013 on Monday, September 23, 2013, at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Co-sponsored by the Wake Forest University School of Divinity and CBFNC, the conference featured Anna Carter Florence (Columbia Theological Seminary), Thomas G. Long (Candler School of Theology, Emory University), and Luke Powery (Duke University Divinity School). Peer Learning Groups Peer Learning Groups (PLG) provide an opportunity for clergy to interact with others in small groups in order to achieve group learning goals. The PLG may be formal or informal and is usually self-organized and convener facilitated. CBFNC PLGs normally meet monthly and provide opportunities for worship, spiritual growth, Bible study, recreation, discussion of ministry-related issues and fellowship. Within CBFNC, there are 16 PLGs that are funded by CBF National and CBFNC. Each of these groups has 6 to 12 members and is led by a facilitator or convener. Funding is offered through an annual application process with CBF National and CBFNC. When approved, a PLG can receive $500 from CBF National and another $500 from CBFNC.
The ministry to churches and ministers in transition continues to grow, thanks in part to the eight volunteer regional coordinators we have enlisted to support this work. In the coming year we anticipate expanding this ministry that is divided into four areas:
Ministers in Transition - On average there are two to three ministers a week who come to us for assistance in finding a place of ministry. These include retiring military chaplains, recent divinity school graduates, ministers seeking to move into congregational life or to move from where they are currently serving. Coaching Churches in Transition - In addition to training search committees and sharing resumes, the latest resource that we now offer to churches in transition is to coach the congregation in clarifying issues or needs that they have as well as developing a profile for their next pastor. We also offer to coach the search committee to strengthen their ability to prayerfully discern the right pastor or staff minister for them. We are currently coaching four congregations and search committees. Terminated Ministers – While, thankfully, the number of terminated ministers dropped in the past year, we continue to see this as a difficult time for these ministers and offer appropriate assistance to them.
Church and Clergy Coaching
CBFNC continues to pursue coaching as an avenue to equip congregations and leaders (lay and clergy) to faithfully and effectively participate in God’s mission in their communities and in the world. Our coaching work this year focused on three initiatives: • C oach Training – Equipping leaders to incorporate coaching into their life and ministry • C ongregational Coaching – A facilitated process for helping congregations discover God’s dream for the next chapter of their life and ministry • D eacon Training – Equipping Deacons as spiritual, congregation leaders

Growth and Development of our Fellowship General Assembly – The 2013 General Assembly took place at First, Lumberton, and focused on the theme, “Sacred Rhythms of Jesus Followers: Come, Abide, Go.” Plenary speakers included Greg Rogers (Oakmont, Greenville), Tommy Justus (Mars Hill, Mars Hill) and Kasey Jones (Washington, D.C.). Fresh Expressions – CBFNC partnered with Virginia Baptists to host two Vision Days to introduce North Carolina church leaders to this movement that started in Great Britain and is reaching unchurched persons with the Gospel while revitalizing established congregations. Regional Gatherings – On October 20, regional fellowship gatherings took place on opposite ends of the state. At First, Goldsboro, participants enjoyed a fellowship meal, a variety of ministry workshops, and worship featuring keynote speakers Mike Queen and Jayne Davis (First, Wilmington). A joint gathering with the Western North Carolina Baptist Fellowship at Calvary, Asheville, focused on celebrating the retirement of CBF Field Personnel, Mike and Fran Graham. Suzii Paynter Tour – In April, CBFNC staff organized a tour for new CBF Executive Coordinator Suzii Paynter, with stops in Asheville, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Greenville and Charlotte. Visioning Process – The 20th Anniversary Vision Team, led by Guy Sayles (First, Asheville), concluded a process of listening to the hopes and dreams of our fellowship and proposing a road to follow for our future ministries, corporately and congregationally. The full report is being presented at the General Assembly. Mission and Ministry Of-
fering – CBFNC launched this new opportunity for individuals and congregations to learn more about the mission and ministries of CBFNC while contributing financially to support the work. A resource kit was developed that included a prayer guide with specific ministry stories, offering envelope, poster, videos and frequently asked questions. Dawnings Retreat – CBFNC partnered with CBF National to host a retreat centered on this new initiative, which leads congregations to conduct a church-wide focus on visioning, forming and engaging.
Mission Resource Partner Updates The CBFNC Partnership Development Committee continues to work closely with the institutions, agencies and ministries that are supported through the Mission Resource Plan. Two meetings were held in May and December with these partners to celebrate current and plan future collaborative ministries. Each partner submitted a full report of partnership efforts for 2012, and an addendum for 2013, that are posted on the CBFNC website, http://www.cbfnc.org/ Finances/PartnerReports.aspx. CBFNC remains grateful for these partners and for the role they play in helping us “bring Baptists together for Christ-centered ministry.”
Christian Social Ministries On October 12, the Racial Reconciliation Committee hosted a Faith and Immigration Summit. The RRC is working on a multi-session curriculum that will be presented in pilot churches in 2014-2015. The Wealth and Poverty Committee initiated Grace Notes at last year’s General Assembly. This is not an award, but a highlighting of significant ministry to combat poverty by local churches and church leaders. The Hunger Fund continues to provide critical resources for starting and sustaining ministries to help those in need.
Collegiate Ministry CBFNC’s focus on collegiate ministry has been on a steady, upward trajectory for six years. We have been intentional in partnering with local congregations and hiring part-time campus ministers and interns to be a presence on state university campuses. We have also worked to dovetail our ministry with the historically Baptist college ministries across the state. This past year Baptist Collegiate Ministry in North Carolina made a significant shift away from paid campus ministers on state campuses to partnering with local churches to help them reach out to students close to their campuses. We know that we cannot recreate the presence that they had, but we want to be open to new and creative ways to reach students with the Christian gospel as well as help them develop into leaders in the Kingdom work open to all of us. We continue to have three part-time campus ministers at UNC, WCU and ECU who serve in conjunction with local boards. We also have interns at Gardner Webb University, Wingate University and Meredith College. We also partner with Yates, Durham, and First, Boone, to provide a presence at Duke University and ASU. CBFNC partnered with Western NC Baptist Fellowship to hire a campus minister to serve in the entire western region, with emphasis on UNCAsheville, WCU and ASU. CBFNC sponsors a mid-winter retreat, encourages internships in local congregations and provides opportunities for continued visioning and continuing educations for those passionate about collegiate ministry. Our winter retreat at Camp Mundo Vista focused on the theme, “Calling,” and drew more than 100 participants. Thirty-six North Carolina students served in North Carolina and around the country in various summer mission and ministry programs including Collegiate Congregational Internships, Student.Go, Passport Camps and the Baptist Joint Committee. These are exciting times as we navigate this new world of Baptist campus ministry in NC. We are in conversation with churches and groups in Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington and Charlotte. Please join us as we look for ways to lead, fund and undergird this ministry. Our students are our present and our future and they are looking to us to guide them as they transition into adulthood as Christ-followers.
Faith Formation and Church Resources Missional Learning Lab – How can CBFNC respond to critical issues of “toxic charity” and “when helping hurts”? We are creating a process and resources to help churches as they plan, implement and evaluate mission trips. This includes the challenge to have an expression of that mission in their own community. Linda Jones and Rick Jordan are working with Matt and Michele Norman, CBF missionaries in Spain, to provide this resource. Retreats and Conferences – CBFNC continues to stress missional attitudes through our events. We also continue to strive to enlarge our events to experiences and then to expressions. One example of this was “Outside/Inside,” the three Children’s Mission Days held in November, with the focus on immigration/refugees. Before the retreat, churches were sent a Bible study that encouraged empathy for immigrants experiencing new foods, new customs, and being the “new kid in school.” At the retreat site, the children had to go through customs, exchange currency, get a visa, and buy some needed equipment for the day. CBF missionaries Marc and Kim Wyatt spoke to the children about their ministry to internationals. An offering went to purchase items for hygiene items included in welcome bags the Wyatts give to internationals. The concluding worship service challenged the children to love the stranger, to bring the outsider in, and to remember that “God loves everyone the same.” This year, CBFNC provided two music festivals, three children’s mission day retreats, a family day retreat and four youth retreats. Sixty-three workshops were offered at the General Assembly. In January, a Youth Ministry Summit was held in Raleigh. This year, we partnered with CBF of Virginia in promoting their youth retreat and Mission Madness. Resource Library – Our Fellowship is full of bright, creative leaders who have original resources to share through the CBFNC Virtual Resource Library. We now have hundreds of resources on our website, with more added regularly. Bible Study – CBFNC partners with Baptists Today to provide adult teacher material for Nurturing Faith, a new Bible Study curriculum, written by CBFNC Church Resources Coordinator Rick Jordan.
