IS IT TIME TO REACH BEYOND LAND AND HEAD TO THE FINAL FRONTIER? A VACATION CLUB IS NOW OFFERING PRIVATELY CHARTERED TRAVEL FLIGHTS TO SPACE.
Longing for an escape far, far away? Here is a new answer: a luxury space balloon. Spaceship Neptune is slated to bring a group of explorers to the edge of space by the end of 2024. Denver-based Exclusive Resorts, a members-only vacation club, recently announced the joint plans with Space Perspective, a human spaceflight company. Spaceship Neptune will carry eight Exclusive Resorts members and a pilot inside a pressurized capsule that is lifted by a 650-foot-tall hydrogen-filled balloon. Rather than requiring members to wear space suits, the capsule affords a relaxed environment with plush reclining seats and a refreshments bar. The entire journey will take about six hours. After launching just before sunrise at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the revolutionary, near-zero emissions Spaceship Neptune will soar to an altitude of more than 100,000 feet, ascending for two hours while the sky is still dark and stars are visible. Gliding along the edge of the stratosphere, members can watch the sun slowly rise over the curvature of the Earth — “a view that has transfixed astronauts since the dawn of the space age,” notes Exclusive Resorts. After Neptune climbs to the edge of the stratosphere, it will then gently begin a two-hour descent back to Earth. Aided by a parachute, the capsule will splash down off the coast of Florida, where it will be retrieved by ship. CEO of Exclusive Resorts, James Henderson, says that the special expedition is designed to offer their members “a unique view of our planet that only a few people have ever had the opportunity to experience.” He promises the custom flight experiences will be “transformational” — as only a trip to space can be. There may be a research benefit to the trips, as well. Space Perspective views Neptune as a research laboratory of sorts, with the potential to study multiple disciplines, including atmospheric science, astro- and solar-physics, and astrobiology, among others. “It’s also a chance to fundamentally change people’s view and perception of Earth,” notes Space Perspective Founder and Co-CEO Jane Poynter. The club’s privately chartered flights aboard Spaceship Neptune are planned to be “the pinnacle” of its 2024 Once-in-a-Lifetime Journeys, a collection of itinerary-based, bucket-list trips in exotic locales. Exclusive Resorts is known for providing these unique opportunities for its members to traverse all seven continents of the globe. The club hopes to send at least 40 club members into space starting in late 2024. It is anticipated that flights aboard Spaceship Neptune will be available for Exclusive Resorts members to reserve on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning in October 2023. Ticket prices have not yet been disclosed, but it has been reported that seats will start at $125,000 each. For some, it may be a small price to pay for a chance to literally watch the world go by.
Starting in 2024, Spaceship Neptune will provide captivating views of the Earth from a luxe capsule lifted by a hydrogen-filled balloon.
