For decades, Saudi Aramco has waged a largely unnoticed battle against the dominant presence on the Saudi Arabian landscape: sand. BY JOHN DOE
Saudi Aramco has long battled the dangers of sand encroaching on roads and highways that serve as primary routes to its many plants and facilities, especially those located in the Southern Area. Through years of experience and a multitired approach, the company has worked to gain the upper hand in controlling sand.
EXCELLENCE IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY Can you imagine texting your home appliances "leaving home," and they woudl automatically turn into power saving mode? better yet, your oven would start cleaning itself?
See page 03 The company employs three main preventative tactics to address encroaching sand, inlcuding the strategic placement of new facilities at areas of lesser impact, the deployment of sand fences along vulnerable stretches of road and the planting of vegetation to stabilize the suface area near highways and roads.
AramcoWorld Breaks Awards Records ASC's flagship publication earns nine awards for excellence in typography and editorial content.

In addition to its preventative measures, Saudi Aramco also uses contractors to ensure on a daily basis that roads are clear of sand as part of the company's multi-pronged strategy to battle sand encroachment.

Embracing a smarter future How would you feel about going back to normal cellular phones without the ability to access the integrated systems and services you have on your current phone such as email, online banking, WhatsApp, social media, etc.? Smartphones have become part of our daily activities, and despite the familiar talk about their shortcomings, they most certainly have improved our productivity and communication. But even as we grow accustomed to our smartphones, a more expansive technological revolution is on the horizon. Appliance giants are making use of the “Internet of things” technology to create smart homes. Smart appliances have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi and simply chat with their owners. Users will be able to use their smartphones to text their appliances and inform them that they are “leaving home,” thereby allowing appliances to turn to “power
saving” mode automatically. Users can also send messages before going back home to adjust the temperature of the room or prepare the bathtub. Not only that, when it comes to productivity, users can put their laundry in the smart washing machine and send messages to activate the preprogrammed laundering scenarios such as removing stains, baby wear or gym clothes. In addition, users will be able to access their refrigerator’s internal camera to keep track of the food availability and avoid purchasing unnecessary food supplies. Ovens, too, have their share of smartness. A smart oven could recommend recipes and adjust the cooking time and temperature to match the selected recipe. Once the oven is not in use, users would be able to send a message instructing the oven to clean itself. And when it comes to security, surveillance cameras have matured, allowing users to access real-time video streaming anytime,
anywhere to ensure that the house is safe. But even more amazing, your smart appliances — a vacuum cleaner, for example — could act as a home guard. As soon as a user activates the “leaving home” mode, the vacuum cleaner would detect any unusual motion, capture images and send them to the user’s smartphone immediately. All of this seamless integration is done using a standard “open smart home platform” through appliance manufacturers and other technology providers such as Microsoft, Apple and Google. With such technological advances, our imagination is our only limit if we embrace them in the spirit of improving our lives. In the near future, it is predicted that these appliances will get smarter and start communicating with each other. Can you imagine your fridge and oven teaming up with your bathroom scale to keep your weight down?

For decades, Saudi Aramco has waged a largely unnoticed battle against the dominant presence on the Saudi Arabian landscape: sand.
Going Against the Grain BY JOHN DOE
ABQAIQ — It’s a relentless battle but one that has to be maintained on a daily basis to ensure the safety of Saudi Aramco’s employees and the wider communities of the company’s Southern Area Oil Operations. Sand, the dominant signature of the Saudi Arabian landscape, shifts continuously and as nature takes its course, it encroaches on roads and highways. The problem has presented many challenges for decades, and the Transportation and Equipment Services Department has been deploying various measures to mitigate sand enveloping highways. The Dhahran to Abqaiq Highway, also known as Route 615, sweeps inland and stretches for 109 kilometers. The road is busy day and night due to the sheer scale of oil and gas operations in the Southern Area of the Eastern Province. Tons of equipment are transported along the route every day, as well as an army of human manpower. Busy roads are inherently dangerous, but
add to this the fact that they can disappear under sand in inclement weather conditions. Among the areas most affected and vulnerable are stretches of roads servicing both Saudi Aramco and local communities in the Southern Area. Dealing with the encroaching sand drift and sand dune migration amounts to something of a science. Large scale sand movement can be classified into two types of hazards. Sand may drift as individual grains through the winds’ action across sand sheets or inter-dune areas, or it may migrate in bulk in dune form. The bulk of sand movement takes place close to the ground and understanding how sand is transported is the key to controlling it. Sand movement consists of three modes behavior: n Surface creep, in which the sand grains roll or slide along the ground. n Saltation, discontinuous movement in which the sand grains are briefly lifted and then re-deposited. n Suspension, in which the sand grains are transported for long distances by the wind.

Sand control techniques are deployed to either reduce the volume of wind-blown sand arriving at a specific location or to prevent sand buildup by facilitating the free movement of sand through the area. Some techniques can be used to accomplish either goal. For example, surface stabilization can prevent the erosion of loose sand from a dune or sand sheet, and additionally, it can enhance sand transport through the area by creating a smooth surface over which moving particles can maintain their momentum. There are three main tactics that can be deployed to battle encroaching sand. The first focuses on the strategic design and siting of facilities before they are built, keeping sand movement in mind. Saudi Aramco employs established best practices in its deployment of sand control methods, from the design, right through to the construction of facilities. The type of facility requiring protection will help to determine the overall approach. For example, some sites such as airports may not be able to tolerate even low volumes of sand flux, so only those techniques that can limit sand flow into the area will be effective. Sand fences are a second option. The idea of a “sand fence” is to reduce the wind speed as it passes through the fence,

A BRIEF HISTORY
1950-1960s When asphalt roads were constructed by the company in the early 1950s, sand dunes were removed outside road limits on an emergency basis until the company’s Maintenance Department took charge of sand removal through the deployment of the company’s own equipment and operators.
1970s
When the Roads Division was established in the late 1970s, it took charge of sand the removal activities of Saudi Aramco’s roads through the
thereby causing the wind to deposit the sand load around the fence. The latest geogrid technology is currently being used by Saudi Aramco. The fencing material can include a High Density Polyethylene mesh material with holes distributed to provide a 50 percent porosity to maximize sand deposit volume. The third option is surface stabilization through the planting of vegetation. This is regarded as the most desirable and the only permanent sand control system and involves the application of biological science. There are various considerations that help determine the choice of suitable vegetation, including the quantity and quality of available water, the percentage of salts in the soil, wind speed and direction and the root system of the plant. The plants and trees that perform best are Conocarpus, Tamarix aphulla, Acacia, Salvadora (Toothbrush Tree), Prosopis and Pennisetum. These species are hardy, have good foliage cover, are of varying heights and can flourish even in the exacting conditions of the arid desert climate. They represent the most effective barrier to the ever shifting sands. An additional element in Saudi Aramco’s armory to push back the movement of sand is the constant manual sand control measures carried out on a daily basis by contractors operating on results driven agreements. Saleh Abdulgader of the Transport and Equipment Services Department explained that the Saudi Aramco strategy involves a combination of all of the above. “The history of sand control in the areas where Saudi Aramco operates starts when asphalt roads were first constructed by the company in the early 1950s. Back then, sand dunes were removed outside the road limits on an emergency basis,” Abdulgader said.
division’s equipment and operators. Front-end loaders, bulldozers and dump trucks were the main items of
surfaces on an emergency basis and from roadsides on a regular basis through the use of heavy equipment.
1980-1990s
2000-today
Early use of sand stabilization techniques beside roads included using crude oil, a tactic commonly deployed in the early 1980s. Fences made up of wooden slats fabricated in the company’s carpentry shops were used to control sand movement during the mid-1980s. By the late 1980s, contractors were hired to handle sand control activities. Sand was removed from asphalt
n A new type of sand fence using geogrid membranes has significantly improved results and is currently used in the place of wood slats. n Performance-based contracts are now in place as part of a long-term solution to control sand on Saudi Aramco roads in the Southern Area. n Plantations of carefully chosen tree species along the sides of highways are now viewed as the most effective longterm solution to sand encroachment.
“Techniques have evolved over the years until we started using the current systems for checking sand,” added Abdulgader, “All efforts to keep sands off the roads and highways involve a variety of jobs and techniques that are both short-term and long-term solutions. “The three main phases are sand fencing, sand removal and sand stabilization. Essentially, we are fighting shifting nature.” The latter, sand stabilization, the long-term and preferred solution is visible 25 to 30 meters from the roadsides. Vegetation, the planting of scientifically chosen plants and trees, is the most desirable and the most enduring tactic. Five rows of three types of trees are being planted along a 30 kilometer stretch of the Dhahran Abqaiq highway. Agriculturist Abdulla Alnaimi is in the business of identifying the best trees and plants to do the job. “Preventing sand movement has many techniques,” he explains. “From my side, I am responsible for the plantation project — it’s the permanent solution for the sand movement — and therefore we wanted to make sure it was going to be a success. Three issues were to be considered. First, choosing the right types of trees that meet the requirements of the sand fence; second, good foliage cover and low water consumption; and the third important consideration is finding them in the market in good shape and condition.” Providing water for the plantation requires a lot of innovation and effort, Alnaimi says. “To feed 28 kilometers of five rows of trees required a lot of effort, especially with regards to the excavation of wells in sandy areas. It took a huge effort to construct road access points and platforms for the rigs to enable effective well excavation.
The first tactic to battle encroaching sand is to build facilities in areas that won’t be impacted by blowing and drifting.
“Maintaining the plants for the first few months until they grew in windy and sandy areas required daily inspections,” he says. The battle against the sand involves the application of detailed science. For example, Abdulgader added: “One or two rows of geogrid sand fences should be installed at an appropriate distance from the facility. The first row of fences should be installed approximately 70 meters upwind of the site and should extend a minimum of 25 meters beyond the edges of the site to be protected. “The second row of fences, if required, should be installed approximately 140 meters upwind of the site and should extend a minimum of 50 meters beyond the edges of the site to be protected. Fences should be aligned perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction. The selection of the number of fence rows depends on the annual drift area. Two rows of fences are recommended in areas with large volumes of annual drift rates.” Sand management and control in the Southern Area is all about mitigating the adverse and often dangerous effects of nature’s behavior. It’s a relentless battle, but one that Saudi Aramco pursues diligently to help keep its employees and the wider community safe.

Aramcon travels around the world to reach new heights Saudi Aramco geologist Paul Nicholson is one of only eight people in the world to have climbed the highest volacano on each of the seven continents.

At these altitudes, you become breathless, easily tired and generally lack energy, Walking just a short distance can leave you gasping for breath.
On Dec. 5, Aramcon Paul Nicholson achieved a monumental feat, becoming only the eighth person in the world to conquer the Volcanic Seven Summits. T h e Vo l c a n i c S e v e n S u m m i t s i s a mountaineering challenge in which adventurers climb the highest volcano on each of the seven continents. Nicholson, a Canadian, is the first North American to complete this challenge. “As a geologist, I’ve always had an interest in volcanoes, but at first, I didn’t set out to complete the Volcanic Seven Summits,” Nicholson explains. It all began in 2004 when Nicholson ventured to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The volcanic summit, with an elevation of 19,341 feet, is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. It was also the first step Nicholson took on what would become a decade-long journey that would test him both physically and mentally and take him to remote corners of the world. When Nicholson later learned about the Volcanic Seven Summits, he decided that it sounded like too good of an adventure to pass up. “The allure was partly the remoteness of the volcanoes,” he says. “They aren’t easy to get to, and the challenge of that was exciting.” Nicholson completed his second Volcanic Summit in the summer of 2005, when he conquered Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus
Mountains in Russia. “Now, this was a particularly challenging climb,” Nicholson admits. “I was ill, which made the ascent even harder than it should have been.” The ascent to the peaks of the tallest volcanoes in the world is by all measure grueling. Climbers such as Nicholson allow eight to 10 days for acclimatization on the volcano before attempting to reach the summit. “At these altitudes, you become breathless, easily tired and generally lack energy. Walking just a short distance can leave you gasping for breath, and we don’t carry oxygen tanks,” he says. “During the acclimatization period, we will hike for a ways up the volcano, then descend to sleep. Every day, we hike a bit higher before descending to sleep, until we have acclimatized as much as possible. At that point, we are ready to try for the summit.” To prepare for his volcanic excursions, Nicholson works on his physical fitness, as well as his mental hardiness. “Doing the stair machine is good for leg strength, and running is good for aerobic fitness and mental toughness. There have been times during a run when I want to quit, but I force myself to keep going and push through the pain. It’s not easy at times, but it conditions you to keep going even when you want to quit, which is great practice for climbing volcanoes.” Nicholson’s next volcanic achievement was Mount Damavand in the Alborz mountain range in Iran, which he climbed in 2007. The following year came Mount Giluwe in Papua New Guinea — the highest volcanic summit on the Australian continent. Organizing the ascent to the remote peak proved to be difficult. “High altitude treks are not a regular feature of Papua New Guinea’s tourism routine,” Nicholson explains. “My wife, Lou-Anne, came with me on the initial scouting trip so we
could organize everything for my climb. Throughout this whole experience, she has been very supportive and my number one cheerleader.” In 2010, Nicholson conquered Pico de Orizaba, a volcano with an elevation of 18,491 feet in Mexico. “As a geologist, being able to spend time on volcanoes is quite exciting. You can see the activity of the Earth, the volcanic bombs, lava flows, steam vents and even see the history of the volcano over time,” he says. In 2013, Nicholson ventured to Antarctica to climb Mount Sidley, in what he calls one of the most surreal experiences of his life. “It was a real adventure and definitely the closest I will ever come to being on another planet,” Nicholson recalls of his time at one of the most remote volcanoes on earth. There’s only one small expedition that ventures to Mount Sidley every year, and everything is dependent on the weather. “The organizers tell you to not to plan anything for three to four weeks after you anticipate leaving Antarctica, because you are completely at the mercy of the weather. If something happens, you are stuck,” he notes. Even after the long journey to reach Antarctica, another trek was necessary to reach the volcano from the base camp on Union Glacier. “We flew for another six hours in a small Twin Otter plane over the ice cap. We had to stop once in the middle of nowhere for refueling,” he says.

Saudi Arabia, with my wife, Lou-Anne, and our friends with a party at Half Moon Bay,” Nicholson shares. When Nicholson reflects on the adventures he has had scaling the Volcanic Seven Summits over the past decade, he feels grateful to have had the opportunity. “It feels quite cool to have done this. When I was living in Canada, I thought I probably wouldn’t get the chance to see a volcano, let alone climb the seven tallest in the world,” he recalls. “That is one of the advantages of working for Saudi Aramco. I now have the resources, vacation time and proximity to take on adventures like this.” Looking to the future, Nicholson anticipates even more adventures as he hopes to continue traveling to active volcanoes around the world.
Getting to Union Glacier in Antarctica was quite a journey, but it took another six-hour flight in a small Twin Otter plane over the ice cap to reach the volcano from base camp.
”
Nicholson and the small group he was with reached the peak of the volcano in temperatures of -20 Celsius, but despite the harsh conditions, he recalls the memory with a smile: “Out of all my climbs, this was the most memorable.” On Dec. 5, 2014, Nicholson reached the peak of Ojos del Salado in Chile, and in so doing, joined an elite group of people — only eight in the world who have conquered the highest volcanic summits on each of the seven continents. This was actually Nicholson’s second attempt to reach the summit. His first effort in 2012 had to be called off due to high snow. “We tried to push through, but the snow was over our knees; each step was a battle, and it became impossible,” he says. On his second attempt, Nicholson proved successful as he reached the peak of Ojos del Salado, the highest active volcano in the world with an elevation of 22,615 feet. “This was definitely the most physically challenging climb,” Nicholson admits. At that altitude, Nicholson barely had time to savor his achievement at the peak. After less than an hour, the cold, wind and lack of oxygen forces climbers to begin their descent. “I celebrated completing the Volcanic Seven Summits once I got back to
We will hike for ways up the volcano, then descend to sleep. Every day, we hike a bit higher before descending to sleep, until we have acclimatized.

At left in this March 1938 photo is Tom C. Barger, a young geologist from North Dakota. Barger was a relative newcomer to Saudi Arabia, having arrived in December 1937. To his right is T.F. Harriss. Barger’s boss, Max Steineke, told him, “I don’t know what I am going to do with you, but I am certainly glad to have you on board.” Many people felt the same way. Barger went on to become president of the company on May 20, 1959, and then CEO on December 1, 1961.

Abqaiq Blankets a Boon for Community Fire Safety
COMMUNIT Y NEWS 02
BY JOHN DOE
A fire blanket is an essential accessory for every home. In December, the Abqaiq Residential Services Unit and the Abqaiq Residential Maintenance Unit began the rollout of the community’s fire blanket installation program in Abqaiq’s GC 11+ community residences. The scale and scope of the company’s installation — 1,200 fire blankets will be installed — reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to safety. When used properly, the fire blanket can be used to suppress small and easily containable fires, as well as to extinguish a fire on a person whose clothes are burning. It is a low maintenance, multi-purpose and efficient piece of fire suppression equipment.

More than 1,200 of the fire blankets were installed into community residences.

Kashmira Baldauf captured this fiery sunset as it descended on Long Lake near Harrison, Maine, this past July while she and her family were vacationing in the New England area of the United States. Baldauf, who works for Saudi Aramco Expatriate Schools in Dhahran, used her Samsung S3 smartphone to shoot the photograph. Baldauf has worked at the school since February 2014.
