CB Nordic: so many ways to have fun on the snow

Groomed trails, ski races, backcountry adventures and memorable dining experiences

The allure of the Crested Butte Nordic Center’s many offerings has expanded exponentially over the past four decades since it was founded in 1987, and the iconic Crested Butte nonprofit has helped create a name for the area as more than a ski resort and summer paradise. Crested Butte is also known as the Nordic Capital of Colorado, and for good reason. CB Nordic grooms 55 kilometers of trails for classic Nordic skiing, skate skiing and snowshoeing, and collaborates with other organizations in the Gunnison Valley to provide 10 kilometers of fat biking trails.

From the Nordic Center’s base at Second Street and Whiterock in downtown Crested Butte, visitors can rent skis or ice skates (The Big Mine Ice Arena is right next door), and thanks to a major addition on the property this year, there is now a roomy public warming house at the main

center above the rental and retail space. The Outpost addition next door, completed in February 2024, has allowed staff offices to relocate there and created a dedicated space for the Nordic team as well.

The original Nordic Center still holds rental equipment and a retail space, but moving the offices out has now opened the upstairs level as a public warming house where visitors can put their boots on and warm up.

CB Nordic offers lessons and tours for all ski levels and ages, whether for classic Nordic skiing, skate skiing clinics or even backcountry ski touring adventures.

The nonprofit hosts a series of Nordic races throughout the season culminating with the

grandest of all, the Alley Loop Race—a Nordic marathon and costumed affair in early February which fills the streets in the heart of downtown with participants of all ages. This event draws visitors from all over the country, as participants and spectators.

Trails and lessons

CB Nordic's trail system includes three unique trailheads accessed from downtown Crested Butte. Ruthie's Run, the West Side and the East Side are the three trailheads.

Ruthie's Run (behind the Nordic Center) are best skied in the morning sun or during storms, as the forest offers great protection from the elements. These are routinely referred to as some of the most beautiful Nordic trails in Colorado.

The West Side trails are sunny and warm until early afternoon and then cool down once the sun dips behind Mount Emmons (Red Lady). Magic Meadows, aptly named, offers great protection from the storms. The East Side holds the sun into late afternoon long after the Bench and West Side trails are already shaded.

For fat biking, there are groomed trails at Town Ranch, the Rec Path, Riverbend Connector, Gothic Road (groomed by the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association), North VillageSnodgrass Mountain, Teddy’s Trail - Snodgrass Mountain, The Club at Crested Butte and Cement Creek Road. These are flat, easy trails great for beginners and many can be combined for a longer ride.

CB Nordic offers a wide variety of dynamic adult and youth programs. For adults, the Master's Community is a great way to meet people and find community, and doesn't mean that you've "mastered" Nordic skiing. Masters classes are for all adult skiers, from beginners to experts, who want to learn to ski better and have more fun. You can also sign-up for personalized

coaching in small-group settings to improve technique and fitness with stimulating drills, lots of skiing and camaraderie.

And for a cozy, backcountry experience, the Magic Meadows Yurt is a must-visit where you can enjoy a Yurt Dinner, Sunday Bistro, or a locals Trivia night throughout the season.

CB Nordic owns and operates the Magic Meadows Yurt, a cozy solar-powered, wood fire-warmed yurt nestled among the willows and trails along Peanut Lake. The land is owned by the Crested Butte Land Trust, which creates a special relationship between the two nonprofits to share the space with the public for recreation.

The yurt can accommodate about 40 people and is open every day all winter for skiers and snowshoers to stop in and warm up by the fire as they explore the extensive network of Magic Meadows trails in that area.

The yurt also hosts special dining and trivia events throughout the winter, and guests ski or snowshoe the short distance from Peanut Lake Road.

Yurt dinners, Sunday Bistro and Trivia Nights

The weekly yurt dinners are catered by private chef Tim Egelhoff and offer wine pairings, beer and warming winter cocktails from local distillery Montanya Rum. These magical evenings are often accompanied by live music as well. Monthly trivia nights include pizza, wine and beer along with prize giveaways, scheduled in 2025 for January 15, February 12 and March 12.

And perhaps the most casual and accessible option, most Sundays throughout the winter the Sunday Bistro offers an a la carte brunch with pastries, soup, juices, tea and coffee.

In addition to its expanded selection of races, dining experiences and spaces CB Nordic is looking at more ways to meet the needs of this growing winter recreation community. The Nordic Center is in the beginning stages of planning for a small snowcat barn on the east side of town, to provide easy grooming access future plans

(including Town Ranch which is free to the public and does not require a trail pass). CB Nordic is working with the town of Crested Butte, who owns the land, to include heated public bathrooms there.

“We had plans to build this a few years ago with the town of CB, but the cost estimates came in high so we paused,” explains CB Nordic executive director Hedda Peterson. “We are working again with the town to potentially try and build that in summer 2026, so that will likely be the next capital campaign.”

The Nordic Center is currently getting quotes from contractors and pursuing grants and private donations. “We want to make much more efficient access to that zone,” says Peterson.

about seasonal Properties

Looking for an affordable place to build your mountain cabin, have a private summer camping spot, create a hunting retreat, or just to own a property completely “Off the Grid”? The mountains surrounding Crested Butte are filled with mining claims and vacant land that is not being mined and may be ideal for your true getaway cabin.

There are numerous seasonal access properties or mining claims in the Kebler Pass, Schofield, Gothic, and Tin Cup areas. Gunnison County has 1216 Patent Mining Claims totaling 22,524 acres of land—three times more claims than any other county in Colorado! The claim is no longer public land and both the land and the mineral rights contained in it become the property of the patent holder. These properties offer mountains, rivers/streams, trees, giant views, and very few neighbors!

The professionals at Coldwell Banker Mountain Properties are your go-to source for all details pertaining to these kinds of properties including accessibility, water rights, well issues, and compliance with the county’s land use resolution.

real estate

When people think of Commercial real estate, they often picture tall office buildings or malls. The Gunnison Valley doesn’t have a lot of those, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities. Commercial investments range from apartment buildings, storage units, vacant land in commercial areas, office buildings and buildings or spaces for restaurants and retail. Businesses like restaurants and retail stores are offered for sale pretty consistently without any real property. Evaluating commercial opportunities is different from purchasing residential property so it is important to have an agent with commercial experience to guide you.

228 Elk Avenue | Crested Butte

McGill’s Restaurant Building is quintessential Crested Butte located in the center of Town on Elk Avenue. Built around 1893, it served as the Town’s grocery store run by Tony and Elanor Stephanic until 1988. In 2005 the building’s new owner undertook a major renovation including foundational repairs, all new electrical, heating, plumbing, and drywall. The original floors were removed, refinished and laid back down. At that time a new roof was installed and again redone in 2016. Since the remodel, the first floor has been occupied and has operated as McGills Restaurant, a successful breakfast and lunch restaurant. The second floor apartment consists of a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, with loft apartment and is currently rented month to month. 228 Elk, only 50 feet from the center of town at 3rd and Elk, commands the most central, high traffic spot amongst the Town’s historic district. In addition to restaurant use, general retail business opportunities are permitted. Sales includes both business and real estate.

Incredible Development Opportunity in the City of Gunnison. This is the site of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad passenger and freight station depot. The property is 2.30 acres directly bordering the CB / Gunnison Airport along the southern side. The property is zoned Industrial or could be presented as its own PUD for the right development. The City of Gunnison was very supportive in preliminary meetings of converting this to some sort of Multi-Family Residential with possibly a commercial component zone. Winter Wonderland: Outdoor adventures beyond the ski resort

There is a lot more to Crested Butte than just downhill skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. So, if you’re less than enthused about skiing the resort and riding the frosty lifts, or if you’re looking to branch out into other adventures, consider the myriad other options in our post-card perfect wonderland: Nordic Skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sled riding, fat biking, ski touring, ice fishing, or even historic pub crawling (yes, we count that as an outside sport).

Make sure to dress for it: Hand and foot warmers tucked inside your gloves and boots are always a good way to extend the amount of time you can stay comfortable outside and remember that keeping your body in motion will make all the difference between being a popsicle and actually being happy to be outside. Ski goggles are for more than just speeding

down Paradise bowl at the ski resort, too. You can don them (or sunglasses with fuller coverage) on your face for any outside sport, especially on a windy day. Last, dressing in layers is the way to go. You can always shed a layer (bring a backpack!) but once you’re too cold it is very hard to add enough outer layers to warm back up until you get inside.

Nordic Ski or snowshoe

Crested Butte is considered the Nordic Capital of Colorado, and Crested Butte Nordic offers gear, groomed trails and even lessons for every age and ability, from classic Nordic skiing to skate skiing to snowshoeing and more. They also host yurt dinners and Sunday morning brunches at the Magic Meadows Yurt for an unforgettable Nordic dining adventure. See page 16 for more about CB Nordic’s impressive menu of options and events.

Big Mine ice arena in downtown CB has public skate hours throughout the day, and there is no charge for skating there. You can pick up skate rentals next door at the CB Nordic Center. The heated public bathroom and heated changing rooms additions in the past couple years have made this a much more family-friendly experience!

In Crested Butte South there is also a free hockey rink and skating pond at Red Mountain Park, with heated public bathrooms, outdoor picnic tables and a fire pit. Gunnison’s Jorgensen Ice Arena has the valley’s only indoor rink, complete with a concession stand, changing rooms and full bathrooms. There is an outdoor rink there as well.

For a backcountry ice skating experience, you can try lake skating on Blue Mesa Reservoir west of Gunnison when conditions are right. For lake skating, ice picks, a personal flotation device (PFD) and rope are advised in case you fall in (it happens!). For more information, visit the National Park Service website at www.nps.gov/cure/planyourvisit/winter-activities

sled

Pyramid Sledding Hill located near Aperture in town is nice and wide, with relatively short vertical paths. Park along Pyramid Avenue between Highway 135 and 8th Street. Ace Hardware has sleds for sale., and you can bring some camp chairs and a thermos to make a proper session out of it.

fat bike

CB Nordic, Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and the town of Crested Butte offer various options to get you pedaling on (packed) snow and learning why it has become so popular. Fat bikes can be rented in town at Big Al’s Bicycle Heaven (www.bigalsbicycleheaven.com) or on the mountain at Crested Butte Sports ice skate

(crestedbuttesports.com) and have fatter tires, lower tire pressure and sometimes even spikes. Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association has a list of which trails are groomed, ready and allowed throughout the North Valley, updated daily. Check out crestedbuttemountainbike.com/winter/groomingreport/.

The resort allows bike access before and after the resort operating hours of 9 am to 4 pm., and guests are required to stop by the Adventure Center in Mountaineer Square to review the biking policy, sign a waiver and receive a sticker for their pass. The uphill route is Warming House Hill to Lower Keystone to Houston. The downhill route is the reverse, Houston to Lower Keystone and finishing with Warming House Hill.

Snowcat/ ski tour/Avalanche awareness clinics

Irwin Guides can take you into the backcountry to ski/ride deep powder in a new environment, with an assortment of options. You can try out snowcat skiing at Scarps Ridge with more than 1,000 acres of terrain or opt for a private guided tour in the backcountry. Irwin/Eleven offers several backcountry and avalanche awareness clinics throughout the winter as well.

If you want to try “skiing uphill,” Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is a good place to start. The resort and U.S. Forest Service allow this activity outside of ski area hours of operation, after 4:30 p.m. and before 8:45 a.m. It is not allowed when the ski patrol is conducting earlymorning avalanche mitigation work, and updates are made daily on the uphill access hotline: 970349-2345. There are also red lights at the base of Red Lady Express and Silver Queen Express to alert uphill users when avalanche mitigation or winch cat operations prevent uphill skier access.

You need a Colorado fishing permit, and a full list of rules around fishing hole sizes, fires on the ice, ice shelters and bag limits can be found with the National Park Service at www.nps.gov/cure/planyourvisit/winter-activities.

The annual Ice Addiction Tournament happens on February 8, bringing ice fishing enthusiasts from across the country as part of a Colorado tour.

Local fishing outfitters Dragonfly Anglers (dragonflyanglers.com) or Crested Butte Angler

can help point you in the right direction whatever time of year or take you on a winter wading trip along one of CB’s iconic rivers.

I don’t have eloquent words yet tonight but it’s important to me to thank our amazing real estate professionals who accomplished the impossible of selling a home with only seasonal access in the dead of winter. Bravo, team!”
