BOARD CHAIR ’ S WELCOM E AN D THAN KS

HEADMASTER’S WELCOME AND THANKS

Dear Friends:

Dear Perkiomen Community:

As an alumnus, past parent, and current president of the Board of Trustees, I’m honored to add my personal thanks for your generous contributions and to recognize Headmaster Christopher Tompkins, Director of Development Karl Welsh, and the entire development team for their hard work last year.

In this year’s Report to Donors, we are celebrating you—the alumni, families, and friends whose generous contributions deserve our sincerest thanks. Together, we “made it count” with a successful and exciting 2013-2014 school year that included record enrollment, the rollout of the new iPad program, campus improvements, a new speaker series, many opportunities for our athletes, artists, and musicians to showcase their talents, and of course, the construction of two stunning dormitories as part of the ongoing Eat|Sleep|Dream campaign.

In the pages that follow, the impact of your support has been illustrated wherever possible with quotes from students and alumni, highlights from the year, and specific examples of how gifts from donors like you made a difference. I hope the appreciation of our students, faculty, and staff is keenly felt.

While every gift is significant, a few generous individuals made a deep impression last year. The Reverend George E. Thomas, a former Perkiomen chaplain, pledged an estate gift of $150,000 to endow four new scholarship prizes and support the Christmas Vespers service. Former Headmaster George Allison and his wife, Lucy, endowed a scholarship fund for boarding students that has already attracted additional financial support. Eric E. Kolbe ’61, our leading campaign donor, pledged an additional $500,000 to construct an accessible entrance, restroom, and elevator for Carnegie Library, among other projects.

By expanding the Perkiomen Fund, growing the endowment, and laying the foundations for the Eat|Sleep|Dream campaign, your collective gifts in 2013-2014 have strengthened Perkiomen for generations to come. Thank you for your loyalty. Sincerely,

JAME S

FINANCIAL AID & ADMISSIONS

When asked why they chose Perkiomen, many students point to the warm community atmosphere or simply feeling at home. Last year, your gifts helped support a successful admissions program that excites prospective students, welcomes new arrivals, and keeps current students returning each year. For many, however, the Perkiomen experience would be out of reach without your support. Your gifts in 2013-2014 made it possible to attract and retain students regardless of financial status. Thank you for helping to keep Perkiomen accessible and affordable for great applicants and returning students.

“It was kind of a gut feeling. I knew I wanted to be here, which I didn’t get from the 10 or 12 other schools I toured.” A R NA LDO

Every day, Perkiomen students are inspired to break out of their academic comfort zones and reach the next level of achievement. Your collective gifts provided the tools that made it all possible this past school year, including equipment for a middle school aquaponics project, materials for a bridge building contest in geometry classes, support for Perkiomen’s team of talented faculty through a wide variety of professional development, and opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom at area museums, university lectures, and the local environment.

ARTS

2013/2014 ARTS HIGHLIGHTS

Opportunities abound for Perkiomen art students through classes, clubs, performances, and exhibitions. Last year, several students also developed their own innovative personal projects, like outdoor art installations, marketing videography and photography, and original music recordings. Your gifts in 2013-2014 supported student-led projects, provided materials, and helped create limitless opportunities for art on campus.

“Perk has given me opportunities no other place could have given me, like real work experience making a commercial, allowing me to improve my work and become a better film maker. Perk has a motto, Solvitur Vivendo, it is learned through doing, and I honestly believe that Perk has been true to that mission because I have learned through my experiences here more than anything else.” ER IC

Perkiomen Theater added a fifth show this school year. Middle School actors performed Alice in Wonderland, while the Upper School undertook two backto-back plays in the fall: Brighton Beach Memoirs and its sequel, Broadway Bound, by Neil Simon. In the winter, the musical Working provided plenty of roles to go around and attracted new students to theater, while the annual spring Variety Show provided another outlet for creative student performances. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTISTS EXPLORED NEW MEDIUMS

Middle School artists had the unique opportunity to explore graffiti as an art medium. As part of a larger project in which they created anti-bullying PSA posters and photographs, students spray painted positive messages inside Engle House prior to its demolition.

Last year, several students took advantage of the opportunity to record original pieces in Kehs Hall’s recording studio.

On the courts, in the pool, and on the fields, Perkiomen students learned valuable life lessons that will aid them in and beyond athletics. Last year, gifts from donors like you provided uniforms, equipment, travel expenses, and facility improvements that allowed Perkiomen athletes to perform their best. This support, along with the talent of our athletes and coaches, resulted in a successful year that included nine championship tournament wins in Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Girls Soccer, Cross Country, Softball, Baseball, and Girls Tennis.

“I was on the wrestling team beginning in 8th grade and was captain my senior year. I was not the type of person who was a natural athlete…I started from the bottom and that was a really hard thing to do. 2013/2014 STUDENT LIFE HIGHLIGHTS

For Bella, quoted below, taking part in a unique weekend activity helped her feel like a member of the Perkiomen family during her first weeks on campus. At Perkiomen, the student life program encourages global friendships, fosters a sense of community, teaches responsibility, supports students academically, and provides a healthy balance between work and play. From advising and study hall, to clubs and weekend activities, your gifts contributed to a program that touches every aspect of the Perkiomen experience.

“When I first came to Perkiomen, I was not very familiar with the American and International students. During the Zombie Run, some of them poured the fake blood on my shirt and brought me together with other people. I really felt like part of the Perkiomen community that day.” YIJ IN

Acting as an extended family for each young adult, the Perkiomen community provides the nourishment and environment that activates students’ awareness of the world around them, enabling them to discover their unique abilities and achieve excellence. COLLEGE COUNSELING

Researching and applying to colleges, securing financial aid, and waiting for acceptances can be a daunting process for juniors and seniors. PHOENIX SOCIETY MEMBERS

We are grateful to the companies that supported Perkiomen by matching the personal gifts of their employees. Many corporations matched the original gift dollar-for-dollar, allowing the school to receive twice the support. To find out if your company has a matched giving program, talk to your human resources department or give us a call at 215-679-1157.

The society recognizes those who made documented bequests to Perkiomen through their will, trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy as well as those who receive life income through charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, and pooled income fund gifts. Below, we thank and acknowledge all current members.

SPECIAL THANKS

There are many ways you showed your support for Perkiomen last year: from telling your friends about our mission and shopping with your Target REDcard, to participating in a college counseling panel and assisting with Alumni Reunions. Thank you for helping to create a dynamic school year. While we cannot recognize everyone who quietly and selflessly volunteered their time and talents this year, we do wish to provide a special thank you to: MS. AMY L. BRAND ’99 MS.
