Alumni Highlight

“My name is Ian Schultheiss and I graduated from CBU in 2021 with a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences. My original reason for choosing biomedical sciences was because I felt that I needed more preparation for medical school; studying biomedical sciences is a great way to do that! I also grew up in Corona which played into my choice to attend California Baptist University. However, once I arrived at CBU and met the professors, I knew that I was at home and that is why I felt God had put me in the right place. Being at CBU motivated me to take on responsibility and gave me the confidence to act on that responsibility.

I gained a great deal of experience talking with alumni, learning new, relevant material that assisted with my application to medical school, and I built relationships with the professors that I am extremely grateful to have. Whether it was how to strengthen a medical school application or the pharmacokinetics of commonly prescribed medications, I’m entering medical school with a leg up on my classmates which is extremely helpful. I was also allowed to work on a few research projects which helped to make me a much more wellrounded individual.

If I am to say anything to someone who is looking to apply to this program, it would be breathe, this program will help you to get where you want to go! It

is challenging but it is meant to be challenging. It’s built to prepare you for a career in allied healthcare and that means you are training to work with people! Allow yourself to work hard but make it a point to make time for yourself.”

Faculty Spotlight

I was initially interested in pursuing a biology degree because I had the hope of becoming a veterinarian. I did undertake and receive a bachelor’s degree in biology and learned to deeply enjoy all aspects of it, including human, animal and ecological areas. Following graduation, I was blessed to get a job doing cardiovascular pharmacology research. This opened up opportunities to get into a PhD program in pharmacology, a degree which I received in 1992. I have been teaching at CBU for 20 years and thoroughly love the environment for students of caring faculty and amazing opportunities. In particular, participating in International Service Project trips with students overseas has been very exciting. I also love seeing the wonderful directions our graduates in biological sciences are going and helping students discern the direction God is leading them for their careers and lives!
