Alumni Q&A

Vanessa is the executive director at the Time for Change Foundation. Vanessa began working there as an intern under the communications department and has worked her way up to Time for Change Foundation’s director. In her current role, she supports the implementation of the foundation’s strategic plans and policies and also provides leadership and management to staff in the areas of planning, programming, funding, marketing and administration.

Q: Why did you want to study business administration?

A: After two years of interning at a local radio station I met God, got saved and was introduced to an internship with a local nonprofit called Time for Change Foundation. I didn’t know it then, but God put this desire in my heart to get my MBA so that I would have the knowledge and understanding to help create programs that support low-income women with starting their own businesses.

Q: What have you loved most about working in the field you are in?

A: The people. A nonprofit is still a business, and while most people undermine the work, it takes a lot to run an entire organization and constantly fundraise.

Q: What about CBU caught your eye when applying to grad programs?

A: When searching for grad schools to attend, CBU was at the top of the list based on word of mouth. When I did my research, I liked the friendliness of the admissions staff and how supportive the school is in helping with the application process.

Q: How did CBU prepare you for the job you are in currently?

A: I believe that CBU’s MBA program provided me with an enhanced understanding of what it means to run a business and what it takes as a manager/leader/director. Additionally, it provided the opportunity to create a network of peers that I can keep in contact with for future business opportunities and partnerships. Lastly, I believe it helped broaden my ability to critically think about situations and apply a more strategic, intentional lens to the work I do.

Q: What was one of the most valuable things you took from your time at CBU?

A: Gaining the confidence I needed to know I don’t have to know it all. And not having a business background does not mean that I couldn’t learn something new and do well at it. Additionally, I loved that the program was God-centered and incorporated prayer and the Word.

Q: What is a piece of advice you would give to someone looking to apply to this program?

A: I’m not a person that gets excited when I don’t understand new things. I get frustrated, but I’m not a quitter. If you are looking for a program that will challenge you and increase your knowledge and skills, this program is for you.
