Alumni Q&A

Dana Dunams Class of 2010

Meet Dana Dunams, a 2010 CBU alumna of the MA in English and Single Subject Credential in English programs. Dana now works as the principal at Vista del Lago High School in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. Her personal interests lie in the art of inspiring, enlightening, and motivating the staff, parents, students, and all of her partners in education to be life-long learners like herself.

Q: Why did you want to study English?

A: I decided that I wanted to pursue a degree in an area of study that I loved, and I believed that pursuing my passion would eventually lead to a viable professional career that I could equally love. I decided to pursue a Master of Arts in English at CBU because I wanted to learn more and eventually become an English professor.

Q: What have you loved most about working in the field you are in?

A: My purpose as an educator is to ensure equitable access and opportunities for all students, especially statistically proven underrepresented student populations. I love assisting the students, staff, and parents that I serve in the attainment of their aspirations and goals.

Q: What about CBU caught your eye when applying to grad programs?

A: I honestly loved the course offerings required to complete the program. The topics of study were interesting, and I just knew that I would be engaged and enlightened. I was also drawn to the Christian perspective and integration of faith.

Q: How did CBU prepare you for the job you are in currently?

A: The credentialing and graduate programs collectively prepared and equipped me with the knowledge and pedagogy necessary to be a

resource to all of the students, staff, parents, and community that I serve.

Q: What is a piece of advice you would give to someone looking to apply to this program?

A: The piece of advice that I would give to someone looking to apply to this program is to be open to learning, and appreciate the process and the journey.

Faculty Spotlight

I started out my collegiate journey pursuing a degree in psychology, but when I took a British literature class for general education, I knew I wanted to be an English major. I kept the psychology major as well and graduated with a double major. I then went on to earn my MA and PhD in English.

I have been teaching at CBU for fifteen years and love that I get to teach such a variety of topics—everything from research foundations in the behavioral sciences, to children’s literature, to creative writing. I particularly enjoy working with student writers and editors to publish The Dazed Starling, CBU’s student literary journal, which publishes creative works from undergraduate and graduate students. Helping students develop their creative and academic voices to speak faith and truth into our world is the best part of teaching at CBU.
