Faculty Spotlight

Physical activity and sports are two of my favorite things. Many of my best life experiences involved participating in or spectating at athletic events. I found kinesiology as an undergraduate at San Diego State and realized that this major allowed me to study physical activity as an interdisciplinary subject. One of my early volunteer experiences in a clinic also showed me how kinesiology can help people pursue healthy and satisfying lives. I’ve been studying, promoting and participating in physical activity ever since.

While most kinesiology students specialize in a particular area, I was trained at the graduate level in both sports medicine and sport management. This allowed me to appreciate the diverse theory and practice of physical activity. I’ve worked in athletic training and physical therapy clinics, exercise settings and on the sidelines of athletic competitions. These are just a few of the many areas of study that make kinesiology so fascinating.

In graduate school I realized that teaching and research in kinesiology are what satisfies me most. I have a particular interest in understanding how Christians relate their faith and their bodies. My focus is to help people integrate their Christian faith into how they participate in exercise, physical activity and sport. Some of my other study and research includes:

• The Olympic movement and the modern Olympic games

• Native American participation in sport and athletics in the 19th and 20th centuries

• Biblical and theological perspectives on the relationship between mind and body

• Integration of health and fitness programs in higher education
