Facility Highlight
We believe that nursing is a human science, and the essence of nursing is found in the relationship a nurse establishes with the patient, their family and the community. Integrating the latest science and technology, the College of Nursing combines innovative leadership and nursing theory in order to promote excellence globally.
Students in the College of Nursing train in state-of-the-art facilities designed to prepare students for real-life situations. The college also features a special simulation room called the “Black Box Room” where students experience immersive simulation. During the program, students interact with standardized patients to practice advanced nursing skills.
Faculty Spotlight
Amanda Madrid, PhD Associate Professor, College of Nursing
I first became interested in nursing when my sister Amber was born premature at 24 weeks. The nurses at Loma Linda University Medical Center were kind and honest during the most difficult time in my mother’s life. When they taught me how to hold her in the NICU, I knew I wanted to teach someone else the same thing later in life.
My professional experience began in 2006 when I became a licensed vocational nurse in hematology. I later became a registered nurse in 2012 and worked in labor and delivery. In 2017, I became a full-time faculty member and nurse educator at CBU while still serving in public health. The most fulfilling moment of my career was founding Purpose Point for Women Inc., a community-based maternal equity center dedicated to promoting postpartum health for BIPOC women. There, I was able to bring my love of nursing practice, scholarship and education together for the service of others.
I’m passionate about nursing because nurses are uniquely positioned to promote wellness and wholeness of faith, fitness, finance, family and fellowship. We can walk alongside individuals, families and communities during their lived experiences.
For research, I am interested in studying the social determinants of health and how they impact the lives of vulnerable populations. As an obstetrical nurse, I noticed that there were more factors impacting the health of my patients. This led to my decision to pursue public health nursing to explore and address those factors.
