PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2020
Live Your Purpose® At CBU, we believe each person is created for a purpose. The Christ-centered CBU experience combines top quality academics with purposeful spiritual and social development opportunities. Here at CBU, classroom instruction aims to equip students for their journey of discovering all that God has in store for their lives. Faculty members participate in workshops on integrating faith and learning, both in their orientation as new hires and in refresher sessions for veteran teaching professionals. The influence of this spiritual foundation on CBU academics is manifested through classroom instruction that underscores critical thinking with a Christian worldview.
Outside the classroom, CBU helps form learning communities through a variety of student academic clubs. In all, CBU offers more than 70 academic and social clubs. Many of them feature training or service-related endeavors connected to a career path. Each semester a Community Life club fair provides opportunities to interact with club representatives to see if a particular group might be a good fit for a student.

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR
Dr. Nicole MacDonald Allied Health Professions Chair and Professor of Athletic Training
Pictures of almost 200 former students adorn the office of Dr. Nicole MacDonald, the chair of the allied health professions department at California Baptist University and professor of athletic training. The number represents the alumni from the Master of Science Athletic Training program at CBU since 2009. “It’s been the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had. To call all these students…my friends and now colleagues, makes me emotional,” said MacDonald, the founding director of the program. MacDonald was recognized as the 2019 Distinguished Professor by the CBU Board of Trustees for her commitment to teaching excellence. “What I love about teaching is being able to mentor students,” MacDonald said. “I care about their success, not just in the classroom but as a professional. I want them to be good people. I want them to be great athletic trainers. I also want them to know that they are valuable and important to God.” When MacDonald set out to design the Master of Science in Athletic Training program, she asked herself, “What would have made (me) a better health-care provider?” “I decided when I developed the program that our ultimate goal was to develop good clinicians. However, being in a master’s program, research has to be a part as well,” said MacDonald, who teaches a variety of subjects such as clinical research. “I think it’s really important that students are good consumers of research in addition to adding to the body of knowledge in athletic training.”
6 // Live your Purpose
The program’s first students began in 2007 and became its first graduates in 2009. “Athletic trainers are healthcare providers working with a physically active population,” MacDonald said. “Athletic training is prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injury and illness.” The program aims to make students “practice ready,” MacDonald said. “We push them, we stress them a little bit. That’s the job, that’s the profession. They need to have a calm spirit and be able to go into an emergency situation,” MacDonald said. “We tell them, ‘Trust your training. You’ve been trained well. When that situation comes, trust your training and you will know how to respond.’” One of MacDonald’s favorite Bible verses is Psalm 37:23-24: “The steps of a man are established by the LORD, And He delights in his way. When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, because the LORD is the One who holds his hand” (Psalm 37:23-24, NASB). That verse came to mind while rock climbing with her brother. “I would be on a rock and say I can’t go any further and my brother would say, ‘figure it out.’ Eventually I would figure it out and get to that next hold,” MacDonald said. “God has established these steps for me. He knows where I’m going to be before I even have an idea it was a possibility, and I can trust that He will always be there to hold my hand through it all.”
“It’s been the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had. To call all these students…my friends and now colleagues, makes me emotional.” - Dr. Nicole MacDonald

years of unprecedented building development at CBU Dr. Ronald L. Ellis marked his 25th anniversary as president of California Baptist University on Nov. 1, 2019. The following week, Ellis reflected on his presidency as part of the School of Christian Ministries Lecture Series on Nov. 7, 2019. He said his vision of a “University Committed to the Great Commission” has been built on the concept of several building blocks. One of the foundations for success has been to create advanced learning centers and community spaces throughout campus. “We aim to create state-of-the-art learning environments where students can thrive and become a part of an academic

Since Ellis became president of thenCalifornia Baptist College, enrollment has grown from 808 to 11,045, an increase of 10,237 students. Under the leadership of Ellis, CBC became California Baptist University in 1998 and now features 11 colleges and professional schools, offering more than 150 majors and minors with more than 30 master’s and five doctoral programs. Ellis also described how extensive research he conducted prior to his interview for the presidency helped him see the potential of higher education in the Inland Empire. To be a leader, Ellis said, one must “see
“One of the big tasks of being a leader is to have a vision but then to stay the course,” Ellis said. Ellis also noted the importance of surrounding oneself with a good team. “You are going to be successful in large part depending on the people you surround yourself with,” Ellis said. “The vision that I had for this school did not come in a dream, it came through my whole life. At the age of 7, in Vacation Bible School we had to put our favorite Bible verse on a poster board and I put Matthew 28:19-20 [the Great Commission] which has become my life verse from the very beginning.”

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
Greta Anderson
Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions
Greta Anderson, assistant director of undergraduate admissions, recruiting and outreach, received the California Baptist University 2019 Employee of the Year award. The CBU Executive Council selects the recipient from among staff members chosen as employee of the month during the academic year. Dr. Ronald L. Ellis, CBU president, noted that during a span of a month Anderson had trained and prepared six admissions counselors who all went on to be successful in their recruitment efforts. These efforts along with her solid work ethic and effective communication style with potential students earned Anderson recognition as Employee of the Year. Anderson took a moment to reflect on her time at CBU.
10 // Live your Purpose
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY
When did you start working at CBU? May 2011. When did you learn that you won the Employee of the Year award? What did you think when you found out? I learned that I won at the annual faculty and staff awards banquet on May 2, 2019, when it was announced. My first thought was, Oh no, I have to be in front of people now! Nevertheless, I felt extremely humbled. I believe that everyone I work with deserves Employee of the Year so it was a very humbling experience and I felt very honored. What are some of your daily tasks? No two days are ever the same, but mostly I get to meet with CBU counselors for one-on-one’s, and also meet with prospective students and families in addition to organizing recruitment efforts and travel plans for our department. What do you enjoy most about your job? I love the people I work with. They make it so fun to come to work each day and they are the hardest working people I know. I also love getting to see students light up when they find out that CBU is what they are looking for in a college environment. It is the moment college becomes exciting and not scary. What is your favorite Bible verse? This changes seasonally depending on life, but this year it is, “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but power and love and discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NASB). What do you think makes CBU unique? I love the community and encouragement that you find here. When I meet with families, I often hear how welcoming and friendly everyone on campus is to them. I love that prospective students experience that before they are even Lancers. What do you tell prospective students when they are thinking about attending CBU? There are a lot of exciting things happening at CBU and it’s a great time to become part of the Lancer family! calbaptist.edu // 11

International Service Projects
SUMMER 2019
CBU is recognized as a national leader in mobilization, offering students numerous options to expand their horizons and participate in service projects at home and abroad. Each year, hundreds of students participate in short-term service-learning projects known as International Service Projects (ISP).
SERVICE IN 25 COUNTRIES
The summer of 2019 was the 23rd year of CBU’s Mobilization efforts and with it the program reached another historic milestone. Since the start of the flagship ISP program, the total number of volunteers has now surpassed 5,000. The ISP teams traveled to 25 countries to perform services such as conducting theater and sports camps, teaching English and assisting in health care practices. Through each interaction, CBU students sought ways to create unique culture interactions and share the hope that is within them.
35
TOTAL TEAMS
As ISP teams begin their journeys, participants—along with their families and friends— gather to pray at the Kugel. That is the granite globe rotating on a base with the scripture from Matthew 28:19-20 etched in stone. It is a fitting tradition, since the Kugel symbolizes the vision of CBU as a “University Committed to the Great Commission.” ISP and related programs provide the Lancer Nation many opportunities to respond to the instruction that Jesus Christ gave his followers.
300+
To prepare for each project, ISP teams receive more than 75 hours of training. This includes an Intensive Training Weekend that consists of community service, team building and seeking cultural interactions before their service project begins.
