Facility Highlight
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is housed within the 11-acre CBU Health Science Campus. The campus includes 70,000 square feet of indoor space with classrooms, labs, gathering spaces and a food service facility that are beautifully tailored to meet the needs of our undergraduate and graduate students.
Our cutting-edge facilities and equipment are designed to provide students with every opportunity to master the skills needed to excel in their chosen professions upon graduating from CBU. Students have access to the Clinical Education Center where, while under the supervision of experienced clinical educators, they will obtain hands-on experience working with those who have had communication disorders across their lifespan.

Bryan Ness, PhD,

Sciences
and Disorders
Bryan Ness, PhD, is the chair of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department and director of the speech-language pathology graduate program at California Baptist University. Prior to earning his PhD, Dr. Ness practiced speech-language pathology in a regional trauma center where he developed an interest in rehabilitation for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).
As a researcher, Dr. Ness works collaboratively with professionals in the community, undergraduate and graduate students, and other researchers to study ways speech-language pathologists can help individuals with TBI recover and adapt to life with acquired cognitive-communication impairments. His most recent work has examined the impact of traumatic brain injury on social communication and interpersonal relations, the return-to-work process and academic achievement for secondary and post-secondary enrolled students. Dr. Ness presents his research findings at various national and regional conferences, and his work has been published in leading rehabilitation and education journals.
Admissions Requirements

Official sealed transcripts from all colleges or universities attended sent to CSDCAS.
Three recommendations: Two from faculty/instructors and one from a professional source sent to CSDCAS.

Comprehensive essay of at least 500 words that explains:
• Your desire for entering the program
• How the program will allow you to live your purpose
• Why your characteristics and goals are congruent with CBU’s mission
Successful interview with program admission committee (not all candidates are selected for an interview).
A bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from an accredited college or university or the evaluated equivalency. Applicants with degrees in other majors must complete a post-baccalaureate certificate program in communication disorders.
An overall minimum cumulative or last 60/90 unit GPA of 3.0.
An applicant whose first language is not English and/or does not have a degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction is required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a recent TOEFL or IELTS score.
Prerequisites
Completion of basic science requirements in biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics and social/behavioral sciences as required by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) 2020 Standard IV-A. In addition to ASHA standards, CBU requires the following courses to be completed with a “C” or better:
• Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech/Hearing Mechanism
