Faculty Spotlight

Hello! My name is Jeff McNair and I am a professor of education at CBU. After growing up in New Jersey, I studied Christian education at Wheaton College. It was there that I first met people with autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and epilepsy. I was embraced with openness, honesty and friendliness particularly from those with intellectual disabilities. Forty years later, God has allowed me to combine a life of weekly disability ministry at my local church with a life in academia focused on community integration, special education and working to bring the Christian church to loving those with disabilities.

When I think about why I love teaching at CBU, three things come to mind. First being our diverse student body. The diversity is the direct result of efforts to make the university as representative of the community as possible. This can be easily overlooked, but it makes for a much richer campus environment.

Second is being able to teach students with academic rigor and grace. Faculty make students work hard, but they are also accessible and recognize that life happens to students. I have been in so many faculty conversations which started with, “How can we help this student?”

Third is being able to freely speak and teach from a biblical worldview. After 15 years at a state university, I finally had the freedom to talk about anything I wanted to. I could now share all the secular perspectives with a biblical point of view on disability. This also assisted me to develop my thinking, combining Christian and secular perspectives. This openness has helped me to be a better teacher and ministry leader.
