Blooming Cactus Flower in the High Desert

For those who aim to have a calendar filled with activities and entertainment, SaddleBrooke – a sprawling master-planned community just 25 miles north of Tucson – may be the answer. SaddleBrooke is a Robson community for active adults that was established in 1987 and has since expanded considerably to a population of approximately 10,000 residents. It has been named by Where to Retire magazine – which considers itself “the authority on retirement relocation” – as one of the top 100 master-planned communities in the nation.

While homeowners have little need to leave the development, with so many amenities right at their doorstep, it is worth noting that the charming towns of Catalina Foothills near Tucson and Oro Valley are close at hand as well, skirting the western edge of scenic Catalina State Park.

The 5,500 acres that make up the park further abound with things to explore, all taking full advantage of the beautiful high desert environment. The SaddleBrooke area has a rich history, dating back to the Hohokam Indians, whose presence is documented by fascinating petroglyphs. Spanish adventurers and missionaries explored the region decades later, giving way to miners and cattle ranchers who saw the potential in the land and eventually made a permanent home there.

It is a descendant of one such pioneer, Lloyd Golder III, who partnered with Edward Robson in more recent years to create and grow the SaddleBrooke community. It is easy to see what attracted those early settlers, as well as the visionaries who saw fit to officially develop that enchanting land.
