Just north of Tucson is the bedroom community of Oro Valley, bordered on its east side by the Santa Catalina Mountains and a scenic state park. The various hiking and biking trails that snake their way throughout the region run the gamut of accessibility, from smoothly paved paths to so-called “primitive” trails comprised of considerably rougher terrain, accommodating all skill levels. The importance of the town’s connection to nature is demonstrated by its popular Adopt-A-Trail program, which encourages local involvement in the upkeep and maintenance of this excellent source of outdoor enjoyment.
The well-attended Heirloom Farmers Market is another perfect example of the kind of pleasant community spirit that reigns in Oro Valley. Purveyors of fresh produce and various other vendors gather at Steam Pump Ranch on Saturday mornings, attracting browsers, tasters and buyers of all ages.
The sociable, family-friendly atmosphere in the town has been noted in recent years by a number of reputable publications and organizations. Among its impressive accolades are inclusion on lists of the “Safest Cities in Arizona,” “Arizona’s Best Small Cities” (with a 2021 population of over 47,000) and the “Top Ten Best Towns for Families.”
