Presents That Make Every Day Special

By Judy Kleinberg If you’re looking for something tried and true, flowers, candy and breakfast in bed are sure to bring a smile to Mom’s face on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 9). But if you’re ready to add a little pizzazz to this year’s celebration, we have a few gift ideas for you.

Over the past year, many of us have spent more time at home – working, homeschooling, cooking and much more. Along the way, we’ve discovered some items that could make home – and Mom – even more comfortable, both now and for a long time to come.

Desk Chair

If being at home means spending hours at a desk, good seating is more important than ever. The ideal chair offers back, arm, seat and spine support with plenty of knobs for adjusting height and angle. Herman Miller is one of the most recognizable names in the chair world, but there are many options for outstanding ergonomic seating. Desk chairs are personal, so it’s important to find a furniture store where Mom can actually try them on for size.

More Light

Directed at a desk, craft table, kitchen counter, sewing machine or open book, task lighting helps us see details. With today’s LED technology, task lamps come in an enormous variety of shapes, sizes and designs to complement home décor and reduce eye strain.

Easy on the Feet

If Mom spends time standing at a drafting table, stove, sink or easel, a cushioned foot mat can help improve her comfort and reduce fatigue. Easy-to-clean mats come in numerous sizes and colors. GelPro is just one of several mat makers to consider.

A Cozy Throw

For snuggling up with a good book, watching a movie or just having a little extra warmth to surround her, a throw makes a wonderful gift. There are a multitude of choices, from handwoven wool and near-weightless down to weighted blankets and electric quilts.

Coffee-Table Book

A collection of favorite family photos (new and old), drawings, poems, letters and images of other memorabilia can easily be turned into a coffee-table book that Mom will treasure forever. Look online for selfpublishing services such as Lulu, BookBaby and Shutterfly.

A Little Tree

For mothers with a green thumb, a bonsai starter kit might be just the ticket. Equipped with everything she’ll need to plant and nurture a tiny tree, this gift can last a lifetime.

Spa in a Basket

Looking to pamper Mom? Consider creating a gorgeous spa basket complete with lotions, scrubs, aromatherapy candle, bubble bath, lip balm, facial mask, hair treatment and maybe even a new bathrobe. Don’t forget to tuck in a few delectable treats, such as chocolates and champagne.

Mother’s Day All Year Long

If one Sunday a year doesn’t seem like enough of a celebration, you might consider enrolling Mom in a _______-of-the-month program. Fill in the blank with whatever you think will make her happiest: chocolate, beer, cheese, hot sauce, coffee, book, puzzle and so on – all available by subscription and delivered to her door.

Of course, whatever you give your mother this year, take a moment to create a handmade note expressing your love and appreciation. Whether it’s a poem or a portrait, it may be the part of your gift she values most.
