These immigrants brought their architectural styles with them which is why we enjoy such disparate styles. From Mission-era adobes, to eclectic Victorian mansions, to restful Arts and Crafts bungalows, to elegant Art Deco edifices, to Mid-century Modern Case Study Houses, all contribute to the panoply of our architectural landscape. Lessons about good design can be gleaned from architect Paul R. Williams (18941980). Through his work and gentle manners, he educated clients about good design, which has clearly stood the test of time. He understood and adapted to changing styles, yet always incorporated elegance, proportion, and scale into his works, both traditional and contemporary. It’s incumbent upon us to advocate for the preservation of our architectural heritage.
