AR C H I TEC TU R E & DESIGN My Restoration View By Interior Designer Tom Boland

A

s a Massachusetts native I grew up surrounded by classic Colonial homes. The architectural details varied, but all projected that sense of an American New England house-which was from a library of restraint and simplicity. When I moved from New York City to Los Angeles in 2002 I assumed my design practice would focus more towards contemporary homes as I admire modern styles and appreciate working with innovative architecture. However, I’ve also restored several homes by architect Gerard Colcord (1900-1984) who was a master of the traditional vernacular. Over the past few years I renovated and updated this Coldwater Canyon property originally commissioned by Mr. & Mrs. David Gould in 1952. Mr. Colcord was a classicist who understood southern California natural light and terrain, and therefore, strategically placed larger windows at the back of the home to admit natural light and capture the views. Neutral interior backgrounds work best as the charm of this home is to appreciate the complementary guest house, rear gardens, and the large pool. The interiors now incorporate contemporary art, a subtle color palette, and clean-lined furniture all of which works well with the home and the California landscape. The result welcomes the best of the past and the present.
