THE WALLIS ANNENBERG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IS POISED TO BRING THE EYES OF THE WORLD TO LOS ANGELES. “I came here about five years ago and met the people who were running The Wallis then, when the theater was still a hole in the ground.” Paul Crewes, the newly appointed artistic director of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, is talking about the first time he saw the complex, which pivots around the historic Beverly Hills post office building at the corner of Canon Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard. “Even just seeing the building site, I could see the potential, and so I was really keen to bring a piece of work here.” Crewes, who was at the time the head of the Cornwall, Englandbased Kneehigh Theatre, one of Great Britain’s acclaimed touring companies (and who is still juggling his duties
with that organization until his appointment at The Wallis officially starts in April), brought Kneehigh’s production of “Brief Encounter” to The Wallis in its first season. “I loved the space and the audience, and the stage is fantastic,” he enthuses. Though that experience took place nearly 18 months ago, the flame that was ignited shows little sign of dimming. “At my time in life — I’ve been 30 years in the theater business — to get the opportunity to start with a new organization is a gift.” The Wallis began its search for an artistic director in March with over 60 candidates from around the world in the running. Crewes’ combination of enthusiasm for the space and his track record at Kneehigh proved him the ideal candidate to lead the center into its future. While at Kneehigh, Crewes established strong relationships with other companies and launched projects that reached into the community to engage audiences who might not normally turn to theater. And his goal with The Wallis is similar: to create a space that is not only integral to the fabric of life in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, but also that attracts the eyes of the world. “The thing about The Wallis is that it’s a performing arts center. It’s not a theater, it’s not a museum or an opera house. It can do everything, and we can bring a range of work in and through this building, which I think is a fantastic opportunity. We can make work, we can produce our own work, we can present work, we can bring music, film, dance…the opportunities are fantastic from a creative point of view.” Partnering with Crewes in his goals is Managing Director Rachel Fine, former executive director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Fine shares Crewes’ enthusiasm for positioning The Wallis as a driving force in the performing arts in Los Angeles. “That is absolutely the end goal, to be a national and international destination,” she says, adding, “I found that audiences have gone from wanting great art to wanting a full-fledged community experience.”

Bohnett took the helm as the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ chairman of the board on Nov. 18. “As board chair, it is my goal to build on the success of the organization to date and continue to develop a strong presence of The Wallis in our local community and beyond,” he says. “We will accomplish this through presenting the highest-quality multidisciplinary performances across a variety of formats and genres as best suits the unique strengths of the facility and the diversity of our local audience.” The Wallis has proven that it can present and sell out important imported productions from around the world and create original programming that appeals to a crosssection of people — to wit, the remainder of this year’s slate, ranging from Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Guys and Dolls” to Jesse Eisenberg’s off-Broadway hit, “The Revisionist,” to the intimate Cabaret series featuring such performers as Christine Ebersole and Ute Lemper to Theatreworks USA’s “The Lightning Thief,” aimed at young audiences. It has also been able to groom a new generation — 10,000 schoolchildren saw shows last year as part of its education program. The next phase will find The Wallis taking an active role in debuting new work. “We can make great work here, and that’s one of the things we will be doing, as well as producing our own work,” Crewes continues. The future he envisions is irresistible: “The dream we have is that this is somewhere people will come for a coffee or a beer or a meal. They may see a show, they may not, but it all starts connecting up.” Get ready to make the jump to light speed.

ancy O’Dell of “Entertainment Tonight” is a purveyor of style, both on and off the red carpet. The Emmy Award-winning entertainment journalist-turned-fashiondesigner has had a long love affair with fashion, interior design, architecture and all things beautiful. Echoes of her personal aesthetic — which she calls “elegance with an edge” — can be seen in her new fashion line on Evine Live, as well as in her classically styled Mediterranean home in Los Angeles. We recently caught up with the busy designer to ask about her handson approach to interior styling and how she personally infused warmth into each space of her house, with a little twist of fun. (She is photographed at her gorgeous home, wearing several signature pieces from her new collection.)
You describe your fashion line as “elegance with an edge.” Are there any rooms in your house that embody that aesthetic?
style because it is very sexy, especially when you throw in a little Spanish guitar music, which we constantly have playing at our house.
Yes, definitely so. At first look, I think one would describe the rooms as elegant, but the more you study them and look at individual pieces of furniture, you see the edge incorporated, many times with oversized and unexpected pieces of furniture. For example, out by our pool, we have a huge outdoor bed. And the outdoor patio really looks like it could be an indoor living room, which is one thing I really wanted to do. I love the outdoors, so I wanted to bring the indoors out and make the outdoor areas feel like rooms themselves with the furniture. Plus, even though Mediterranean style is a very elegant style, it is also an edgy
Your home is a Mediterranean-style house. What year did you purchase the home? Do you remember what immediately struck you when you saw it for the first time? We purchased the home in 2007, about a month before I gave birth to my baby girl — talk about nesting! My husband saw the home first and called me from the tour. He was so excited on the phone, and I remember telling him to calm down and not act so excited as he was with the real estate agent! I told him to not make it too obvious! As far as when I

saw it for the first time, I just remember thinking, how could we have possibly found a house that had exactly everything we wanted? It actually wasn’t even on the market when we bought it. We described to a real estate agent what we were looking for — from the number of bedrooms to the square footage to the backyard to the style — and he said, “You have actually just described this home that I know about to a tee, and it may go on the market in about a year.” I told him I was about to give birth and I couldn’t wait! He said, “Let me talk to the owner.” And the rest is history. The home never went on the market! Did you work with an interior designer, or did you work solo? I am often asked if I were not a journalist, what would my profession be. I always say interior designer, because I love interior design so much! I’m addicted to HGTV. It is why I do the Rose Parade with them every year and why I did the “Celebrities at Home” series on HGTV. As far as our home and decorating it, I really enjoyed doing most of it myself. I love being hands-on. I do have an interior designer and friend, Paul Lesperance, who has helped me through the years on many houses. I will always ask him to come over and give me his opinion on things. I was lucky, though, because the furniture and accessories we already owned worked so well in the house. I have always loved Mediterranean homes, so my furniture is that style. But even the measurements worked out perfectly in our home. Therefore, we say it was meant to be our home! You’ve said in the past that you were envisioning a Mediterranean-style house from the beginning. Why were you drawn to that style over, say, something more modern? Mediterranean has always been my favorite style of home; my husband’s, too! There is just something so warm and inviting about it. While I think it is fun to look at modern homes and fun to stay in modern hotels, I definitely like living in a Mediterranean home. I love everything about the style: the warm colors, the rich wood, the Spanish tiles, etc. And Mediterranean just feels sunny, happy and romantic to me. I feel I must have Mediterranean ancestors, because I am so completely comfortable in and drawn to that style. How much consideration was paid to keeping the Mediterranean style while bringing your unique flair to it? The home was built in 1929. We were very lucky in that we bought the home from an architect/contractor. He actually studied the architect who designed the home

and the style of the home before bringing it up to date. So when we bought the home, he had done all the work to make it function as a modern home, yet it totally looked as if nothing from the original home had ever been changed. He even added a whole extra section to the house with additional bedrooms and a bigger kitchen, but you would never be able to guess which was the new part versus the old part of the home. That’s what a great job he did in honoring the history and original architecture of the house. The only thing we did was to add a barbecue area to the patio and a TV area out by the pool. Yep, that’s right, my husband needs to be able to watch golf while in the pool! But we stayed true to the architecture as well and mimicked all the other structures, so even the TV structure blends in well with the Mediterranean style. If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? The only thing I would change in our home might be the master bedroom. When homes were built in the 1920s, they didn’t build the bigger master bedrooms like they do today. Our master bedroom actually consists of two smaller rooms, so we use the second room as a gym. If I had the courage, I’d knock down the wall in between the two rooms and make it one roomy master, but I don’t think I can handle a remodel now. I wish we had done that a few years ago when we remodeled one of the small bathrooms. But to do another remodel….hmm…not ready quite yet! What’s your favorite room in the house? Ironically, it is actually what I call one of our outdoor rooms, the outdoor patio. It is so peaceful out there. There is a fountain, and I love the sound of water. So does my daughter. In fact, when she was a baby and she would cry, I would just walk her out to the patio, and as soon as she would hear that fountain, she would stop crying and become so peaceful. That’s probably one of the reasons I love that area so much…those beautiful memories. It is also where the family hangs out a lot. Part of it is covered, and we all gather to watch a football game or just have conversation. When our parents visit, we sit out there on the swing. It is just a relaxing, wonderful outdoor room with fond memories. When it comes to entertaining in the house, what’s your favorite memory? My favorite memories of entertaining at the house are of my daughter’s birthday parties. We have had the majority
of her parties at the house. It has been so much fun to decorate the backyard with her and to have all the kids and parents over just to hang out. My daughter always comes up with the most creative themes, and we go to town finding things to decorate with, so it becomes quite the fun mother-daughter project. It always winds up being an all-day celebration! What are some of your favorite furniture pieces in the house? Probably my favorite piece of furniture in the house is an antique chair that used to be in my grandparents’ house. And it was actually in my grandfather’s house when he grew up, so it has been in the family a long time. I remember visiting my grandparents as a little girl; my grandfather, who was a banker, wore a hat to work every day. He would come home from work and put his hat on that chair so meticulously every day, so that it would be ready for the next day. When I look at that chair in my house, I flash back to that like it was yesterday. That’s one thing that I love so much about furniture. There is so much history associated with it. What are some of your go-to places for unique finds or Mediterranean treasures? I love antique furniture stores and hearing the history behind different pieces. Again, I think what is so special about antiques is that they do tell us a story. I am so interested in the object’s journey. Actually, all pieces of furniture are like songs in a way to me. And we all know the power of an old song to trigger vivid memories, which transport us back in time. That same thing can happen when you see or think about a piece of furniture, as furniture is so entwined with all the people, seasons and places in our lives. That’s beautiful. Even if not particularly old, you will always remember the couch in your parents’ house growing up, right? It is one reason I always try to bring home a piece of furniture or some type of decor from every trip. That way, when I look at it, I will always remember that time, that moment in our lives. I have a tapestry hanging in my living room that I got in Monaco while covering the Monaco Film Festival. I have a breakfast table I went shopping for with my mom, so I’ll forever remember that day shopping with her when I look at it. I have a piece of pottery from Santorini that I bought with my husband when we went there while dating. Whenever I look at it, I remember the romantic trip we took there. So the treasures come from around the world, but the real treasures are the memories.

When I looked inside, I saw hope.” Ezzie Richey recalls his life-altering transition from homeless vet to volunteer for The Giving Spirit, a Brentwoodbased nonprofit organization that provides aid to L.A.’s homeless. It’s exactly what founder Tom Bagamane had hoped to deliver with his all-volunteer organization, which celebrates its 16th anniversary in January. The Giving Spirit mobilizes about 2,100 volunteers twice a year to distribute survival kits, filled with everything from food and blankets to clothing, toiletries and water to the city’s homeless from Skid Row to Santa Monica. As Bagamane prepares for his annual winter outreach event, from Dec. 10 to 13, we talked to the philanthropist, entrepreneur and strategic business consultant about The Giving Spirit’s expanding reach in the City of Angels. Why has The Giving Spirit been such a passion project for you? The idea came when I lived and worked in Washington, D.C., my hometown. One winter in the early 1990s, I was driving through the city past the White House, national monuments and federal buildings, when I noticed dozens of homeless living on steam grates surrounding those same buildings. I went home and told my sister, “We need to do something to help these people.” So that winter after midnight, we dropped provisions off at their feet and covered them with blankets as they slept. By 1999, I had just relocated to Los Angeles and realized that L.A.’s homeless population was by far the largest in the United States. I rallied three volunteers that year with the same premise as we had in D.C. and served 40 people in West L.A. with some of the same things we provide today. Since then, we have served over 35,000 people all over the Southland with the help of over 10,500 volunteers.
L.A. is the nation’s second-largest city, so they naturally believe that there are more job opportunities than in more depressed parts of the country. They also hope they can find understanding from a typically liberal citizenry. With El Niño coming this year, are you concerned? Yes, of course. People are putting sandbags in their homes and sealing their windows, but can you imagine if you didn’t have any shelter at all? Our winter kits include rain gear, like ponchos and umbrellas and items a mobile person would need to brave the elements. And we give them disaster blankets, which are meant to be barriers to the elements. But it’s not enough. It’s not going to be easy out there. I pray that they can find shelter. What has been the greatest challenge for The Giving Spirit over the last 16 years? Raising money. If people donated throughout the year instead of waiting until the end of the year, we wouldn’t be sweating our budgets right up and through our main event in December.

What are you most in need of right now? We need to raise $200,000 by December 12. Our goal is to reach $300,000, so we can take care of 4,600 lives this winter and next summer. We don’t count the kits. We count the lives. L.A. is one of the wealthiest cities. What’s it like to be surrounded by so much affluence while you are doing this work? The resources are here. Because I’m based in Brentwood and I’ve made my life here, I’m grateful to a lot of the folks who helped me in the beginning with The Giving Spirit. In terms of L.A. as a whole, our city has earned its reputation, both good and bad. It’s a city where the power of the individual rules the day. This can be a good thing — especially when you see the level of creativity here — but it can also cause people to forget about others. Our work really helps people get back in touch with what really matters — the well-being of people in our communities.
L.A.’s homeless population has increased 12% in the last two years. Why do you think our city has such a large homeless population? There are some geographical issues, such as the weather, that bring people here. I also think it’s a hub — you have LAX and other transit points that bring people to the city. L.A. is the city of dreams, so we see a lot of young people who leave home without a parachute, thinking that they can achieve their dreams in the entertainment industry — and they end up living on the streets. Thankfully, Los Angeles is a progressive city with a lot of agencies in place that can take care of these folks on a 24/7 basis. On an annualized basis, there are also 20,000 homeless veterans here, who come to the large VA facility in Westwood.

U
pon graduation from New York’s venerable Parsons School of Design, Tom Buckley landed at McMillen, Inc., regarded as one of the finest decorating firms in the country. In 1968, when Mrs. Henry Ford II asked Tom to design her French maison on Copa de Oro Road filled with museum quality antiques, Los Angeles became his home. Ever since, the First Families of Los Angeles have clamored for Tom’s classic interiors, including a prominent couple who recently commissioned a David Adler-inspired mansion in Bel-Air by Robert A.M. Stern. The breakfast room, 11’ in height, faces east to catch the morning light (of course!), and blends the most classic of gestures with a light and easy touch – the hallmark of a master. The focal point of the round, pilastered room is a French shagreen (shark skin) table, a copy from Gilbert Poillerat, a Parisian designer in the 1930s-40s. Unlined cotton pique curtains are accented with apple green grosgrain ribbon. A bleached oak floor, with white paint rubbed into the finish, is an old-world technique. The chandelier, which the clients found in Paris, ornaments the room beautifully.
