A retired Wynn Resorts executive fashions a hotel-worthy junior penthouse in the sky with famed hospitality designer Todd-Avery Lenahan. For more than a decade, Marc Schorr stood by Steve Wynn’s side as the COO of Wynn Resorts. Schorr not only helped Wynn grow into “a world-class multibillion-dollar company,” but also came to know hospitality designer ToddAvery Lenahan of TAL Studio. Lenahan’s bold storytelling approach had wowed Las Vegas for years, earning him a Designer of the Year award in 2008 from Boutique Design magazine and praise from Wynn himself (“Todd holds his own as one of the best designers in the world”). Schorr had been so impressed with Lenahan’s work over the past 16 years that when it came time to build out the finished shell of a 21st-floor junior penthouse he purchased at The Carlyle, he turned to the renowned interior designer once again. “The concept for this home originally came from a time when the Schorrs were doing a lot of travel between Las Vegas and China for business,” recalls Lenahan. “They wanted a landing pad in Los Angeles.” Schorr, who now divides his time among properties in Las Vegas, Sun Valley and Los Angeles with his wife, Jane, took design cues from his international travels but also his hospitality background. “We wanted it to feel like a stateof-the-art hotel suite in the sky, and we wanted that TAL Studio look — soft, contemporary, luxurious,” he says. Schorr spared no expense in achieving that look. Accessed by its own private elevator foyer, the furnished southwestfacing penthouse reveals a timeless yet modern aesthetic “not driven by trends,” according to Lenahan. “It was intended for a confident and accomplished homeowner,” he says. Keeping his clients’ comfort in mind, Lenahan also opted for performance and beauty over any sort of preciousness.

“We were inspired by the light quality,” says Lenahan. “We also decided to play off of its height above the freneticism of L.A. We wanted it to look seasonally responsive, so that no matter what time of year it was, the home would always feel great.” Hotel-like comforts abound in the 3,535-square-foot space. Lenahan meticulously chose fabrics in warm neutral tones, covering nearly every surface of the penthouse to create a “peaceful sanctuary.” The living room, especially, feels warm and welcoming, helped by unobstructed views of the city and the Pacific Ocean showcased from 13foot floor-to-ceiling windows, with furnishings by noted designer Holly Hunt. The Schorrs have hosted their fair share of cocktail parties in this jaw-dropping space, always managing to leave their out-of-town guests in a state of perpetual awe. “People don’t realize how beautiful the views are in L.A. — the way the entire city lights up at night,” he says. “Our friends and family go right to the windows in our living room and become completely captivated by the skyline. It’s breathtaking.” The views stretch into the chef’s kitchen, where sleek Poggenpohl cabinetry, Miele appliances and an eat-in breakfast area facing west maintain the clean lines of the entertaining spaces. Two guest bedrooms each boast their own views, plus an ample dose of Lenahan sophistication. Carrying the same lush fabrics from the living room, the master bedroom suite is a haven with oversized his-andhers bathrooms and closets, plus a viewing balcony, where Schorr has been known to catch glimpses of Catalina Island on clear days.
Smart home technology via a Crestron system also allows the Schorrs to have complete control over their environment via an iPad touchscreen. These kinds of thoughtful additions have made their residency at The Carlyle feel as seamless as a five-star hotel, not to mention the VIP amenities that come with the full-service luxury residential building: the 24-hour white glove concierge service, personal valet parking service, pool, gym, a private club room featuring Fendi Casa furnishings and a climate-controlled wine cellar with private lockers, among others. Naturally, the 35-year hospitality veteran places a high premium on all of these services: “I always look at the staff. It tells you everything.” The Carlyle’s location on what’s known as the Golden Mile of the Wilshire Corridor was also an important factor. The Schorrs are just steps from the movie theaters, cafes, restaurants, shops and museums of Westwood Village. Concludes Schorr: “You’re five minutes from everywhere. For a couple in our position, there is not a better place to live.”

e opened P.S. Stash by Lee Stanton, a pop-up shop at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five in Palm Springs, this fall and will be open through Modernism Week in February. And he just opened a new exhibit on Dec. 1, 2015 in collaboration with artist Gary Gibson next to his showroom in the heart of the La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ). He continues to run his showroom and STASH LA, a designer warehouse in L.A., all while working on a much-anticipated style memoir. To say Lee Stanton is a busy man is an understatement. He will again kick off Legends of La Cienega, the premier design show he co-founded, next year — “ironically called ‘One of a Kind,’” he says. Or maybe not so ironic. After all, Stanton’s reputation as an antiquarian and international purveyor of fine things who strives for distinction is well documented — and celebrated. As he continues to balance his many efforts while holding court in his two stunning Southern California homes — a pied-à-terre in West Hollywood’s Sierra Towers and an English-inspired oceanside home in Laguna Beach — Stanton gave us an inside look into his newest shop, his collecting process and the beautiful things (and places) that inspire him. Your pop-up shop in Palm Springs at The Shops at Thirteen Forty Five opened in October. How does it stand apart from the “traditional”? The P.S. Stash by Lee Stanton pop-up is a diversion from the typical midcentury modern objects that are normally expected in Palm Springs. It is a collection of late 19thand 20th-century objects with a modern flair that will shake up and add diversity to the stereotypical modernist interior. What can you tell us about your collaboration with Gary Gibson? RAW is an exhibition that features furniture and objects in their purest state. The deconstructed nature of these pieces becomes art and takes on a structural modernist tone. This exhibition embraces patina that incurs with age as beauty.
Do you remember the moment when you knew it was “the one”?

I actually lost the first unit I was looking at in a bidding war with Elton John. Then, my unit became available. I loved the views. I felt like I was in my own treehouse overlooking the city yet escaping it at the same time. It was perfect, because not only was it larger, but it had already been gutted and was ready for me to step in and design my own space. Losing the first unit made me move aggressively and fast. I knew it had to be mine the minute I walked into the construction shell.
How have you approached your properties differently in terms of style?
Elle Decor has already observed that a Los Angeles high-rise seems an unlikely spot for a renowned antiquarian. What’s your take on that? Not all antiquarians are stodgy traditionalists living in the past! I like to mix it up and use antiques in a nontraditional manner. Good style transcends time. And good antiques transcend style. They provide a sense of depth, substance, character and soul to what can routinely be a shallow environment. You’ve managed to mix old with new rather seamlessly, we must say. What is your secret? Clean, straight lines, a proper color palette and, most importantly, restraint. You also own a home in Laguna Beach. What attracted you to Laguna? Have you considered a home in Palm Springs? I actually just finished a getaway home in Palm Springs as an alternative getaway. I enjoy the majestic serenity of the mountains as well as the architecture in Palm Springs. There is something about the more recent history there that transports me into the glamorous days of the middle of the 20th century. However, there is nothing like going home and escaping to my private, Arcadian manor-house lifestyle in Laguna Beach. I never tire of the crashing waves, the
I embrace the contemporary high-rise lifestyle in Los Angeles, with a reverence for good style from centuries past. It is a clean and orderly environment that keeps me focused while I am in L.A., living the here and now. The home in Laguna is an escape to a different time and a different place. It is layered with history. Architectural elements from centuries-old villas and manor homes, artisan details and one-of-a-kind antiques collected from decades of travels create a space that is very private and reflective. The home in Palm Springs is a very masculine interpretation of the modernist movement. I lightheartedly say it is where Frank Lloyd Wright embraced the industrial revolution with a mid-century twist. Which antiques are your most prized possessions and why? I am often asked this question. It is almost impossible to answer, because it depends on the moment, the mood and the lighting. Sometimes, I walk into a room and I would say something as simple as a candlestick or box. At times, it is my 18th-century Tuscan bookcase. Other times, it would be my industrial metal desk from the north of France. I love my collection of charcoal drawings. Sometimes I just stop and take in my 18th-century landscape from England. Other times, I would say my modernist abstract painting from Paris. That is the beauty of curating timeless objects. They give our beautiful properties relevance and make our house a home. Do you have a story of “the one that got away”? I learned early in my career to never let anything get away. If you love it, buy it. Do not think twice. If you change your mind, you can always sell it or give it away. It is better to have admired and owned, than to have admired and lost.
What can you tell us about Legends of La Cienega next year? The event will kick off with a gala on Tuesday, May 2, and festivities will continue Wednesday and Thursday, May 4 and 5. Designers from around the world descend upon the La Cienega Design Quarter in Los Angeles to participate in the panel discussions, special exhibitions, window displays and parties. What’s the status of your much-anticipated style memoir? I am still collecting my thoughts and some of my favorite interiors around the world for my book. This is a work in progress. What first drew you to Sierra Towers? I can remember as a child riding by Sierra Towers, thinking, “Someday I want to live there.” It is a perfect location. My showroom is less than a mile away. I love the architecture and the views. It is the perfect canvas to showcase how effectively antiques can be used in a contemporary environment. The full-service amenities make it a perfect pied-à-terre when I am not at my home in Laguna Beach.

ashion designer Lela Rose may be best known for her pretty party dresses and bridal gowns, but she’s also a creative party hostess with a down-to-earth flair for entertaining. Her new book, “Pret-a-Party: Great Ideas for Good Times and Creative Entertaining,” proves that you don’t need to be overly formal or precious to throw a memorable, modern day fête.
“There is a cowboy thread running through everything I do,” confesses the Texas-native-turned-New Yorker. “I like to go rogue with high-low combinations and uptown-meets-downtown style. I’m not pulling out Grandma’s heirloom china, if you know what I mean.” As we move into prime holiday entertaining season, we asked Rose to share her best styling ideas — from wintery silver and white tabletops to spiced cocktail recipes and clever themes that can take an event over the top. What’s your motto when it comes to hosting? My overruling principle is to make it fun. If it’s not going to be fun, there is no point in doing it. In “Pret-a-Party,” one of your ideas is a Silver-and-White Christmas dinner. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration for this concept? We host a Christmas dinner every year with close friends. I really like a format like that. During the holidays, we spend so much time at quick cocktail parties with five-minute conversations. The group we invite for this dinner includes some of our closest friends, and it’s our way of sending them off to enjoy their holiday travels with their families. I’m always looking for different themes around the idea of an intimate dinner party. One year, I decided to host a winter white party. Everything was white in some way. We asked our guests to bring a (literal) white elephant gift, and they had to wear winter white and silver sparkles. Even our address was White Street. The only thing I didn’t do was white food! I did, however, bake something that was silvery: a devil’s food cake topped with sparkles and white frosting so it looked like snow. Do you ever change it up for the annual holiday dinner? Yes. Each year, I do something different. One year, for example, I hosted a dinner party inspired by the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” where we had a partridge with pear and things that were Old World, like a spidery, silver spun lace that I laid over a linen tablecloth. I bought little silver tree ornaments to turn into napkin rings, which also doubled as ornaments. These were easy and inexpensive to make. I’ll use old wine bottles and take the label off to use as candle holders. To me, they are elegant table décor without going overboard. My closest friends know that I will always have some random trick up my sleeve! What other fun twists might you bring to a holiday party? A twist on the white elephant gift exchange is always fun. I’ll find unique ways to change up the process of passing out numbers [for the order of the gift exchange] to make it special. For example, I once baked little numbers into a cake! Everyone had to eat their cake to find their number. I have baked items into cakes for years. For birthdays, I make little riddles, or add little coins or charms wrapped in wax paper. It’s that element of surprise…. Can you give us a few creative ideas for holiday decorations or centerpieces? I have never decorated my tree with traditional ornaments. I’ll decorate with German Steiff animals for Christmas, which I give to my kids each year. Doing that creates a memory for them, a way to mark the year and remember so-and-so gave this animal to me this year. It makes the Christmas tree more memorable than buying ornaments or candy canes. For centerpieces, I’ve used persimmons and pomegranates. I hate buying things that are just going to be wasted. I often go back to using those old wine bottles. When the party is over, I’ll make pomegranate and persimmon margaritas! What would you recommend for the host or hostess who has a guest list of sophisticates who have pretty much seen it all? Think about the way you do your table. I love to have one idea that runs through everything. I’ll even match my drink to my dress. I keep the offerings within one idea and one theme. For example, I recently hosted a party benefitting MAD Symposium, an international culinary symposium founded by Danish chef René Redzepi of Noma fame. I dressed the table in all white and hired this beautiful paper artist who crafted these white herbs out of paper and olive branches. They were gorgeous, and it was about the food, because this was a food organization. I like to use things that can be sustainable, and use things in multitude of ways. I do not like to use just the standard flowers or floral centerpieces. If you think about it in a different way, it can be very special. Another example is in my book: the Gingham-Style Chicken Fry. For that party, I put wildflowers in old tomato cans, and I made all of the guests a tomato and chili jam as a to-go gift. People really appreciate the thought that goes into these special details. As a guest, what is the one thing you always appreciate? I appreciate it when a host or hostess has thought through the details and welcomes you with something special — maybe it’s a surprise — as soon as you walk in the door. There are cocktails that I love for winter — the Nor’easter, which is made with whiskey, and the Apple Snap, which is made with blackstrap molasses and apple cider. I also have a Rum Flip, which is made with shaken egg and aged rum, that’s just delicious.

RUM FLIP Use best-quality aged rum in this holiday favorite and shake each drink individually. Serves 8 1 ½ cups aged rum 8 large eggs 8 tablespoons heavy cream 8 rounded teaspoons sugar Ice cubes For each drink, combine 3 tablespoons rum, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon cream, and 1 rounded teaspoon sugar in a cocktail shaker. Add about 1 cup ice cubes and shake vigorously until frothy, about 20 seconds. Strain the drink into a coupe glass and serve.

This Chenin Blanc from the 4-acre Clos de la Rue Vineyard is the Loire Valley’s answer to Burgundy’s Meursault. The wine is bright, racy and loaded with mineral notes from its limestone and chalky soils and high elevation. The wine sees a touch of oak, giving it a bit of round fleshiness.
Billecart-Salmon Rosé gets all the attention, but its Blanc de Blancs is a star as well. The wine shows high-toned citrus and exotic spice notes with lively bubbles and brilliant acidity. It’s a great choice for caviar and clean fish dishes like crudo and tartare.

Dom Ruinart, Brut Rosé NV
Giorgio Rivetti makes this beautiful and elegant wine from his property in Tuscany. This is one of the more complex and saline expressions of Vermentino that I’ve had from this region. It shows delicate floral and spice notes alongside a salty savoriness that gives the wine depth and length.
Ruinart Rosé is high at the top of my list of sparkling rosés. It has a great deal of body and deep meatiness, lending it the ability to hold its own throughout an entire meal. It is also a wonderful and festive sparkler for sipping during cocktail hour. Krug, Grand Cuvée NV
Red 2012 David Duband, Gevrey-Chambertin The New Year begs for special wines, and red Burgundy is definitely special. This supremely elegant and refined Pinot Noir shows piercing red berry and plum notes, velvety texture and bright mineral core. Claude Koeberle from Soliste Vineyards is a genius whose Pinot Noir is the closest to Burgundy you will find in California. His wines shows power and grace all at once, with aromas and flavors of red currant, raspberry, exotic cardamom and ginger spice, and a voluptuous mouth-feel.
When the vintage Krug is financially out of reach, the Grand Cuvée is the perfect option. Important to note, Krug’s nonvintage wine should never be considered a consolation prize. This deep and rich wine is composed of over 120 wines from over 10 vintages, giving the wine serious complexity, power and elegance. Clos Cazals, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru 2002 Calling this small production is an understatement. Made from 50-year-old vines in the walled vineyard named Le Clos Cazals, this powerful wine shows layers of ginger and honey spice alongside oyster shell-like mineral notes and hints of rose blossoms.

rchitectural trends come and go, yet most clients still prefer traditional styles for their dream homes. Colonial Revival is currently the most popular request, particularly in Los Angeles. This is because it’s a style which can be streamlined and simplified in detail while maintaining all the traditional undertones. For example, it can be given a more Moderne or Art Deco feel—these variations have an extensive history in Southern California dating back to the 1920s and ‘30s. Colonials also possess a certain stateliness conveyed with its sense of order and inspiration from the Colonial and Georgian periods. Structures can be formal and informal, simultaneously, plus light in color, with white painted brick facades and stone or wood trims. Today, clients rarely desire dark spaces and heavy detailing or extensive ornamentation. They also appreciate the logical layout of Colonial Revivals, which typically have a central hall and staircase as a focal point, with public and private rooms flanking each side. In the long term, traditional styles will persevere and be interpreted in more informal and streamlined ways that relate to modern living.
