Malibu Calling
An entrepreneur and brand founder finds his edge with a modern entertainer’s paradise in Serra Retreat. By Allyson Gray
W
hen you first hear that the Serra Lake House can accommodate 70 cars for large events, you might imagine a huge, imposing edifice rather than an organic oasis, and a flashy city-dweller’s pad rather than a quiet Malibu retreat.
A rare find on so many verdant and tree-studded levels, this 7,247-square-foot contemporary estate is indeed an entertainer’s paradise, but it is first and foremost a private refuge. Owner, designer and builder Brent Hocking — founder of The Mod Selecter and luxury spirit brands DeLéon Tequila and Virginia Black Decadent American Whiskey — employed the refuge idea as a guiding principle when purchasing the land in 2014 and taking two years to build the fourbedroom, six-bath home. “The land was heavily forested. You have the mountains and trees surrounding you. It’s very special,” Hocking says.

He envisioned an impressive abode, surely, but one that not only elicits the uttering of “wow” on the approach but also speaks to the soul as the property reveals its true nature — including actual nature. The famously beautiful Malibu hills, dotted by oaks and crowned by groves of eucalyptus, surround the Serra Lake House, located in Malibu’s exclusive, 100-home, gated enclave of Serra Retreat. Peaked, beamed ceilings rise over wall-to-wall Fleetwood pocket sliding doors. A palette of rich, dark hues, burnished to a warm glow, imbues rooms with a romantic sophistication. Sumptuous surprises, like a tufted seatback on a regal, window-seat-style bench in the great room and a freestanding bathtub, dark and high-rimmed in the fashion of an oversized Tibetan bowl, showcase quirks of creativity. Eye-catching light fixtures suspended over scraped, chocolate oak floors are functional art pieces, radiating light and setting the mood. Hocking’s daring use of dark hues may surprise those who are accustomed to the lighter, sandier tones typically found in Malibu residences — but he and Torres took great pains to find “the warmth and sexiness” in the color palette. The result is a feeling of cozy intimacy, almost as if you are being completely enveloped by the interiors, despite the home’s seamless indoor/outdoor flow.
And what of the estate’s name, the Serra Lake House? “It’s because of the pool,” answers Hocking. “It looks like a lake. It’s 20 feet wide and 72 feet long, one of the largest pools in Malibu. The Jacuzzi is large, too, 12 by 20 feet. It can fit 30 people!” Like the consummate hostess she is, the Serra Lake House has no trouble drawing 30 people and more onto resort-like grounds, featuring a perfect rectangle of flat land, very rare in Malibu. Hocking’s taste for the yin and yang of light and dark, vast expanses and intimate spaces, jeweled accents and dense, natural foundations has created a residence perfectly at home in Malibu — and where people feel completely at home. “I thought about the way we like to live today,” says Hocking. “We want to get away and feel relaxed, like we do in a hotel. With the launch of their new store, Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone of Consort are just one step closer to redesigning the world. “Oh, my god, it’s amazing!” Mat Sanders, one-half of interior design powerhouse Consort, is talking about the opening of Consort, the store on Melrose near Highland he launched with his co-founder and partner, Brandon Quattrone, just last month. “I couldn’t be more excited,” he adds. The store, a brick-and-mortar adjunct to their indemand interior design business, opened in partnership with Marie Goble, is located at the epicenter of the new and emerging Los Angeles home design district, which includes Lawson Fenning, Galerie Half, Object, Reform Gallery, J. F. Chen and Blackman Cruz. Sanders, who was, until recently, the creative director of Domaine Home (now MyDomaine) — he still wears an editor-at-large hat for them — and Quattrone, who designed the West Coast branches of Soul Cycle, saw a niche in the interior design marketplace that was in desperate need of filling. “Everything’s very brown,” says Sanders, “There wasn’t a store that was fun, with modern furniture that felt cozy and home-like and still felt really chic and elevated.” The pair were also getting more requests for work than they could take on. “So, it’s a way for people to bring a piece of the lifestyle into their home,” Sanders explains. The store is set up like a house, with everything arranged by room: Consort’s own lush cashmere color block
pillows are tucked into the bedroom, pottery by coveted brands like Lux/Eros and Matthew Ward can be found in the dining room and Estee Stanley’s sumptuous couches rule the living area. And everywhere there are items that speak to Consort’s wit and whimsy. Take the mixed media sculptures by Katie Kimmel or the sign near the entrance to the store — “This year let’s resolve to make better bad decisions.” Even their moniker bears hints of the duo’s design philosophy: “It’s mischievous…we’re getting into trouble, because we’re making these ladies spend money their husbands don’t really want them to,” Sanders laughs. Sanders’ ebullience is balanced by Quattrone’s zen calm. “Brandon’s more minimal,” Sanders explains, “He’s an architect, first and foremost. So that’s our creative tension. He has more of a modern, minimal sensibility, while I’m like ‘More pillows! More texture!’ So it’s always a balance.” And one that apparently works; the mix has endeared them to a growing body of elite clientele, celebrity and otherwise. Their current projects include the design of Jessica Alba’s new Honest Company offices in Playa Del Rey, a ranch-style house for “Pretty Little Liars” actress Shay Mitchell, new offices for Clique Media, MyDomaine’s parent company, in both the Pacific Design
Center and New York, and a couple of projects with Jimmy Kimmel. “That was one of the big goals of retail,” Sanders explains, “To provide us with opportunity to pick and choose the design projects and only take on the work that we really want to do.” That includes opening up more Consort stores — New York, London and Aspen are on the list — and a television show. “It’s called ‘Design Insomnia’,” Sanders starts. “It’s like ‘What Not To Wear,’ but instead of ambushing someone on the street with a fashion makeover, we ambush them in the middle of the night while they’re sleeping.” Quattrone jumps in with the details, and it’s clear how the two are able to balance the demands of their many projects. “We burst into the room and we redo their space before the sun rises.” Sanders adds, “We pitched it to a few networks and there’s interest. If it goes, I’ll die.” Maybe piling a television show on top of launching a design business and opening a store is too much? Sanders laughs, “You never know what’s going to stick, so you just do everything and see what happens.” So far, the lights are green as far as the eye can see.

Bold Move A+D Museum, also known as Architecture and Design Museum, Los Angeles, breaks new ground in the Arts District. By Alyson Pitarre When the A+D Museum first opened its doors in the historic Bradbury Building in 2001, downtown L.A. was not the thriving cultural metropolis it is today. There were no multimillion-dollar condos. No L.A. Live, Walt Disney Concert Hall or The Broad. Redevelopment, however, was just starting to gain traction, as the city moved ahead on its “Adaptive Reuse Ordinance” to create more housing downtown. What followed was a nomadic existence for the donor-dependent museum, moves here and there with no permanent home base from which to advance its mission of celebrating and promoting an awareness of architecture and design. That is, until 2009, when the museum took up residence on Wilshire Boulevard in L.A.’s Museum Row. At the time, architect Stephen Kanner, the A+D’s thenacting president remarked: “It’s not just a museum for architects and designers, but a museum for the public.”

Fast-forward to today — and that promise is still very much alive. Fresh off its June 2015 move to downtown’s booming Arts District, the A+D Museum has returned to downtown Los Angeles with renewed focus. Its new home, located at the corner of Colyton and 4th, “is a signature building that really pops, as Angelenos whiz by to cross the 4th Street bridge,” according to Executive Director Tibbie Dunbar. “It is terrific to be at the groundswell of the revitalization of the Arts District and the rebirth of downtown,” she adds. The museum’s inaugural show in the new address, “Shelter: Rethinking How We Live in Los Angeles,” has already kicked off a productive conversation about housing in Los Angeles. The exhibit ran from August 20 to November 6 and featured six L.A.-based architects’ and designers’ residential solutions, tackling issues such as the city’s increasing density, decreasing buildable land, new transit offerings and growing diversity. Co-curator Danielle Rago says the exhibition examined “existing residential typologies and explored different residential models that are more relevant to the contemporary condition” while also “engaging with a wider audience about the future of housing in Los Angeles.” She and co-curator Sam Lubell decided to focus the show on the concept of shelter — a basic human need — to commemorate the museum’s relocation to its new home and the long lineage of important residential architecture in the city. “The Los Angeles single-family home has long been studied and replicated in places outside of the city,” she explains. “L.A.’s needs, though, have shifted, and the show addressed these changes through the six proposals for both single- and multi-family designs.” Some of the inventive solutions proposed included Bureau Spectacular’s whimsical exploration of vernacular domestic housing in L.A. along the river and wHY’s future-looking design that activated public space along Wilshire Boulevard’s Metro Purple Line. Proposals by MAD and PAR also responded to the increasing density and new transit offerings on the Wilshire Corridor as well as their location in one of the city’s cultural epicenters, with LACMA, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the Peterson Museum. “Their designs of high-rise courtyard housing towers provided both dense as well as vertical green solutions for a new L.A., while maintaining both a visual connection and, in some cases, direct access to nature — a quality and condition that is so important to Southern California living,” Rago notes. The museum’s current exhibit, “Pushing the Press,” hits a completely different design note, as it celebrates the enduring power of print as a medium with a tribute to work collected from Pasadena-based printer Typecraft’s collaborations. An upcoming exhibit starting on March 24 takes inspiration from the museum’s new downtown digs with the “COME IN: DTLA!” exhibition, which will present what is on the minds and in the studios of the city’s cutting-edge, innovative designers — whether it’s architecture, product, graphics, fashion or murals. “A+D Museum will continue to host and produce cutting edge and enlightening exhibitions of architecture and design,” says Dunbar. “Our new gallery space is a more open plan, allowing for creative demarcation and fluid story telling.” For current exhibition and program information, call 213-346-9734 or visit www.aplusd.org. A
rt is one of the most enriching forms of education, yet it’s been nearly eliminated in public school curriculums. P.S. ARTS in Venice, California, a nonprofit organization that provides high-quality arts education programs in underserved public schools and communities, is making great strides in changing that — and the world has taken notice. The organization was honored as the 2014 recipient of the Americans for the Arts National Arts Education award and was invited by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities to model examples of high-quality STEAM classroom projects at the White House with First Lady Michelle Obama. We recently spoke with CEO Kristen Paglia to find out how she is planning to help inspire the future citizens of Los Angeles to be creative, celebrate uniqueness and lead fulfilling lives. Why do you think providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities is so important? Dozens of studies have shown that being engaged in the arts increases students’ potential to succeed in school and in their future careers. The arts also move us to see and value fellow human beings, the earth and the unknown — which is very important in this increasingly dangerous and unpredictable world. Where do you see your program’s role within the greater Los Angeles community? In short, P.S. ARTS’ role in the greater Los Angeles community is to make schools better. State budget cuts have nearly eliminated arts from our public schools, even though one in seven Los Angeles jobs is in a creative

ARTS helps fill that gap with weekly dance, music, theater and visual arts classes to ensure our city’s most vulnerable children are getting the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. How did you become involved with P.S. ARTS? I double-majored in dance and early childhood education in college and earned a master’s in dance therapy. After accepting an opportunity to teach students with disabilities in severely underserved schools in California, I discovered that my most powerful teaching tool was my dance background. I earned a doctorate, focusing my research on the benefits of dance education, and when I saw an opening for program director at P.S. ARTS, I realized the organization shared every one of my passions. That was nine years ago.
Is there anything exciting happening in the future that you can tell us about? Yes — we launched a strategic planning process in September to achieve the highest level of organizational stability and positive field impact. We also have an exciting new partnership with the Culver Unified School District (CCUSD) and Sony Entertainment that will provide schoolwide visual arts education in three CCUSD schools. In the Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD), we’re taking a similar collaborative approach where students receive weekly dance instruction through matched contributions from the Herb Alpert Foundation and district funds. We’re striving to continue this trend and extend our reach throughout Los Angeles.
What achievements or advancements over the years have been the most meaningful to you? I am most proud of our ability as an organization to establish and nurture partnerships. One of our most meaningful achievements was being a part of an initiative funded by the Herb Albert Foundation to provide the entire Lawndale Elementary School District (LESD) with an arts program. Today, every child in that district receives weekly instruction in visual and performing arts through P.S. ARTS, and, according to LESD Superintendent Dr. Ellen Dougherty, their “academic success is beginning to soar… [which] is directly correlated to students’ experiences in the arts.”

Professionals in finance and technology also call it home. In terms of supply, Manhattan Beach is already a densely populated city with 35,000 people living in less than a four-squaremile area. A
specialty of my practice is to bring “architecturals” (significant homes designed by noted architects) into the modern era in a respectful and thoughtful manner. Regardless of the size project, here’s an optimum checklist to assure success. Begin by following the medical axiom, “First do no harm.” This means to maintain the architect’s “original intent” with circulation patterns and detailing. Second, confirm the structural integrity; then, order a set of “as-built” drawings since original blueprints are often not available. Third, diligently integrate the homeowner’s current needs (aka “the wish list”) with the existing project. Fourth, inventory all the existing details: floor, wall and ceiling finishes; cabinetry; and fixtures. Fifth, upgrade or install new systems including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, etc. Finally, incorporate all the above aspects into the final remodel. My firm recently renovated actor Tom Mix’s 1934 Beverly Hills home (at right) which included as-built drawings, demolition, architectural review approval, construction documents, permitting, and project management.
