T

he vision came immediately. It started with the property’s unobstructed views, stretching east, south and west, all the way from downtown to Century City, Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean. The idea was to fill the flat area of the one-acre hilltop expanse with water — like a continuation of the ocean beyond — and place the house right into the “sea.” It was just the kind of modernist compound Michael Palumbo had always dreamed of designing. “I’ve been designing homes and estates for 33 years, and this project is the best one ever that I’ve done,” says the prolific L.A. designer/developer. “It was a major labor of love. It’s the pinnacle of my career.” The fact that the site rested on one of the most prized streets in the Trousdale Estates area of Beverly Hills — and featured one of the best panoramic views in the city — only intensified Palumbo’s fascination. The empty plot of land was his blank canvas. “My jaw dropped when I first saw it,” he recalls. “It was everything I had ever wanted in a property: privacy, views, location. It was a clean palette. I had to have it.” He purchased the coveted site almost on the spot and embarked on a year-and- a-half-long collaboration with award-winning architects Shubin + Donaldson. Plans were drawn up for a monumental residence that fit right into the Trousdale modernist architectural tradition: 24,500 square feet of sleek open space with seven bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, sunken living room with linear fire elements, great room with a hidden bar, and an 18-seat dining room — all surrounded by water. Elemental and serene, the house was designed to embrace its owner and offer a new definition of shelter. True to Palumbo form, the entry provides the first moment of wow. Both Shubin + Donaldson and landscape architects Coen & Partners envisioned a shallow, 1.5-inch-deep reflecting pool extending from the entry to the front gate. Palumbo thought it was impractical at first, but the team eventually came up with the genius solution of having the water retreat to a catch so vehicles could easily drive over it. “The result will be really quite stunning — especially at sunset,” says Palumbo. The water is designed to reflect the sun, guiding guests as they walk across the sidewalk toward the entry. From there, concrete steps float over water, leading to a massive pivot door and breathtaking glasscube foyer through which visitors can view more water via a lavish acrylicbottomed pool with a sculpture that extends to the edge of the property.

“I envisioned it as a party space for people who don’t want to go out in public,” says Palumbo. “It’s a nightclub under the water.” In contrast, the ground-level master suite was placed right on the water. The 3,100-square-foot space makes its grand entrance via a private art corridor leading into a sitting room with a morning bar and spacious bedroom with electronic pocket doors opening up to the reflecting pool. “You can dip your toe into the water when it’s open,” says Palumbo. The suite also opens up to the pool and has its own private access to a rooftop garden with some of the most eye-catching views in all of Trousdale. “I wanted the entire house to have this indoor/outdoor feel,” says Palumbo. “All windows disappear into pockets electronically and open up to the outside. It’s so seamless ... you never feel the transitions.” It is a bold and daring vision the team is anxious to see come to fruition.

“The tranquility created with the water, the views and the lines, which have been so precisely aligned, bring a very Zen-like quality to the house,” adds Palumbo. The theme of translucency continues from the foyer pool to the lower level of the home, where natural light floods in from the glass cube overhead. The result is a stunning central entertaining space below, complete with a nightclub with DJ booth, full bar, pool table and poker lounge, 20-seat theater room, two-lane professional bowling alley, 2,000-bottle wine room, restaurant catering kitchen, full-service hair and nail salon, wellness center, gym and an eight-car auto gallery with two car-wash bays.

L.A. Story LACMA’S FrAnk Gehry exhibit trACkS the ArChiteCt’S trAjeCtory, induStry-ShApinG teChniqueS And Love oF hiS Adopted City. By Jaymi Naciri

Frank Gehry may have been born in Toronto, but his love for Los Angeles can only be described as unabashed. The Pritzker Prize–winning architect has been based in the city for more than five decades and has done some of his most prolific — and most revered — work here: the Venice complex created for ad agency Chiat/Day that now houses a West Coast Google workforce; the Gehry House in Santa Monica, designed as his own family home and recipient of the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious Twenty-Five Year Award; and, of course, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which achieved icon status the day it opened in 2003. Across the country and around the world, Gehry’s work has earned him acclaim, from the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris to the famed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. While his LACMA retrospective (ending March 20) showcases a half-century of design evolution, Gehry continues, at 86 years old, to add to his portfolio, with a number of L.A.-based endeavors: 8150 Sunset, a large Hollywood mixed-used project; Santa Monica’s Ocean Avenue hotel and museum project; as well as two probono projects including the Jazz Bakery, envisioned as a world-class music venue in Culver City, and a new headquarters for inner-city nonprofit Children’s Institute Inc. And then there’s the revitalization of the L.A. River, an idea that Stephanie Barron, senior curator and department head of modern art at LACMA, calls “genius” because it means he can “harness his curiosity and problem-solving abilities to address a major challenge in Los Angeles. I can’t think of anybody better or who loves L.A. more,” she says. We caught up with Barron, who gave us some inside information about how the exhibit came about, Gehry’s process and his ever-growing legacy. You have curated a half-dozen lacMa shows that have involved frank GehrY in soMe waY. for You, what is the draw? I’ve worked with Frank Gehry since 1980, through to this most recent exhibit. He has amazing curiosity, and he asks really good questions about the material being presented. He helps me to create a good storyline to present the artworks in the exhibit and he is also an amazing problem solver. For example, when we did both the Ken Price retrospective and the Calder exhibit, there were serious requirements about the protection of works of art. In the Ken Price show, the artist required that there be no vitrines or tops over these very vulnerable sculptures. We had to come up with a way to protect them but also honor the artist’s intention. For Calder, we were required to keep the sculptures three feet away from visitors. How do you do that without having fairly intrusive fences or barriers to protect the pieces?

My philosophy is to go to the smartest person you know to solve the hardest problem, and present it at the beginning so it becomes part of the design aesthetic. In every case, Gehry comes up with a seamless solution that otherwise might have ended up being not nearly as inviting. how did this current exhibition coMe about? I knew that the Centre Pompidou in Paris was organizing a Gehry retrospective and was not only including an astonishing array of models but also delving deep into the archives to find an incredible range of drawings. I thought, “This show must be seen in Los Angeles.” Gehry was open to the possibility, so we worked closely with the Pompidou to adapt its exhibit. My idea was to adapt the design and add to it work that was in studio, in development, and that can be seen in the last section of the show. I also had the good fortune that Gehry and I were in the same city and have a worked together many times. His team was terrific to work with and I think the result is a very effective exhibit design that was tailormade for our space and the content. what was Your Main objective with the exhibition? Architectural exhibitions can often be difficult for the general public. They’re looking at these models that are steps away from the real thing. Many people can’t read blueprints or architectural drawings. It’s hard to get a sense of how the drawings, sketches and models translate to built spaces. Our goal was to make it accessible to a wide range of people, not just architectural specialists. The content and groupings and proximity of monitors to drawings and models convey that. Including the sketches with an exploration of sources and approach provides the public with an insight and a window into Gehry’s creative process. how are the theMes of urbanisM and the developMent of new sYsteMs of diGital desiGn and fabrication explored in the exhibit? We can see it quite easily if we look in the section on Disney Hall. With its array of drawings, and then the competition model and later model, you can see step by step and get an inkling into the evolution of the project, which took many years. What is most misunderstood about Gehry’s work? People who haven’t had the experience of being in the buildings don’t understand how remarkably they work

for inhabitants. When you see images of the exterior, it’s often difficult to know what it’s like to be in the space. Go listen to a concert at Disney Hall. It brings out the best in the musicians. The acoustics are astonishing. We hear the musicians better, and they hear the audience better. There’s an intimacy in there that’s remarkable, especially given the scale. When people see the exuberance of the designs, they don’t understand they’re built from the inside out. The designs solve problems. They work beautifully on the inside as well. GehrY is arGuablY one of the Most influential architects of our tiMe, Yet he is also a controversial fiGure. whY do You think that is? There’s perhaps a misperception that his buildings are impossible to build, difficult to execute and expensive; that’s not accurate. In terms of the practice of architecture, his embrace of technology as a tool to allow him to build relatively complicated designs that don’t look like anything else in a relatively easy manner has revolutionized the field. A contractor may look at a drawing and think it’s tough to build. The way Gehry’s practice works, he has tightened that relationship between architect and fabricator. The computer is a translator — a program allows the design to go from the desk of the architect directly to those who are going to cut the stone or the titanium plates so they can control each specific element. They solve any problems that arise so these buildings come in on time and on or under budget. what do You want people to understand about Gehry’s Work after WalkinG the exhibit? I hope people understand the range of his buildings. Many people in L.A. will come to this exhibit knowing Disney Hall; it may be the only Gehry building they’ve been in. The range of his imagination and the buildings he has been involved in may surprise a lot of people. do You have anY plans for another GehrY exhibit anY tiMe soon? The last time I saw him, he said, “What are we doing next?” I always enjoy and am challenged by the opportunity to work with him. I hope we have another project. Stay tuned! Bending the rules

L.A.-based Bend Goods sets its sights on creating timeless designs that defy tradition. By Lauren Gega

G

aurav Nanda, the creative genius behind Bend Goods, has made his mark on the modern furniture scene with his whimsical shapes and sustainable objects. Immersed in midcentury design from an early age, Nanda’s artistic vision became reality when he opened the doors of his L.A. studio in 2010. The Michigan native is known for his bold color selection and intricate patterns created through his signature application, “bending” — a method of shaping wire by hand and spot welding. The result of this innovative application yields pieces built for style, comfort and utility that stand the test of time. We recently sat down with the designer and entrepreneur to dig a little deeper into the Bend world and discover the real story behind what makes his goods so, well, good. You left Your forMer life at GM as a vehicle interior Model sculptor. what Motivated You to trade in cars for furniture and hoMe Goods? Getting my job at GM was more of a decision based on necessity than following a dream. I had just graduated from design school and saw GM as a great place to hone my skills at a very stable company. It was a great job and truly gave me the product design foundation that I would need to start Bend. I am also from a very entrepreneurial family; I had watched my parents and younger sister both work for themselves, and I knew that I wanted that lifestyle for myself eventually. After leaving GM, I moved and was searching for dining room chairs for my new place and couldn’t find any wire chairs that I liked. I am a big fan of the Bertoia, but wanted something different. I noticed a need for myself and figured that other consumers could be feeling the same way, so I developed my first line, and the rest is history, so to speak. you’re oriGinally from michiGan. What do You like Most about l.a. livinG? where do You Go to feel inspired? Having traveled here throughout my childhood, I truly fell in love with the vibe and lifestyle of Southern California. When I decided to get into furniture, I was inspired by the indoor-outdoor quality of life here. It just made sense to me to come here and immerse myself in that life. Now living here, there is truly no end to where I can go to find inspiration. There are streets in Hollywood and on the Westside in Venice and Mar Vista that are like time capsules, with midcentury modern homes lining them. I am also very outdoorsy

and active, so Runyon Canyon or a hike up Temescal Canyon can really reset my brain. There is nothing like going to the Hollywood Bowl to see almost any show to make you feel creative and inspired; that space is truly a magical place. as a child, You spent suMMers vacationinG in palM sprinGs. how does MidcenturY Modern architecture and desiGn influence Your pieces? Those Palm Springs vacations are what made me want to do this. I feel lucky to have been able to spend time in Palm Springs in the 1970s, in the city’s true heyday. The vibe and the excitement that could be felt during that time is what I try to recreate in a modern way with my design and with our marketing and branding. Those are days that changed my perception of life and will be my influence and muse for maybe the rest of my life. can you tell us a little more about bend’s drive for MakinG sustainable products? We spend a lot of time thinking about our impact on the environment. We make our products out of steel, which is both plentiful on earth and highly recyclable. We also construct our chairs so that the legs can be removed, which allows us to ship two per box and limit our carbon footprint. We aim to make quality furniture that is timeless in its design and built to last just as long. We like to say that we are making the heirlooms of tomorrow. Your work has Garnered a lot of attention froM heavY hitters like hGtv, elle decor and architectural diGest. what can we expect to see over the next couple Months? We are launching our second collection to date and doing it in a very out-of-the-box way. Each month, we will be launching one piece from the collection. Our first release was at the end of January, a hybrid side table-stool that we call Switch. The rest of the collection, like Switch, is very innovative and creative. It all incorporates our signature wire but includes categories that we have never offered before. There are also some upholstered pieces toward the end of the year that we are really excited about. There’s a good chance it’s Sea Crest Nursery in Goleta, CA, which specializes in 25 varieties of palms and 15 varieties of rare, endangered cycad varieties + tropical and unusual trees. In 1976, Westside lawyer Jack Stevenson grew weary of practicing law. Fortunately, his love of palm trees provided a midlife career change. He bought 20 acres on the coast of Santa Barbara, just south of UCSB, and never looked back. Forty years later he’s considered one of the few old-time nurserymen still working and is clearly the go-to expert in the world of palms. The nursery is now second-generation, run by his daughter Cristi Walden, and is still revered for specimen trees you won’t find anywhere else. It’s technically a wholesale business and they encourage homeowners to contact them via landscape architects, designers or contractors. However, if the project is large enough, they will work directly with homeowners who are creating their own landscape.
