PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Combating the Female Leadership Gap Last year, Coldwell Banker® began to address the challenges female real estate agents face in moving into leadership roles. According to the National Association of Realtors® 2017 Member Profile Report, women account for 67% of all real estate agents, but only 46% of broker-owners are women. Armed with that information, Coldwell Banker began working in 2018 to narrow the female leadership gap. We started 2019 by gathering more information through the Coldwell Banker Examining Women and Leadership Survey, which found that 34% of Americans who work in femaledominated industries agree women face a “glass ceiling,” making it tougher to reach senior-level positions. Coldwell Banker is beginning to redefine what leadership looks like in the real estate industry. Here are some steps we’re taking: • Starting conversations. We’re giving a voice to women leaders through Our Women in Leadership Series, which started with monthly calls and blog posts and will soon add a podcast.

It may not be a sure thing that you’ll get a tax refund this year, but one fact is certain – the spring season brings you one step closer to summertime leisure and outdoor fun. If you are handy around the house and lucky enough to have that extra cash coming your way, it’s the perfect excuse to jump into a backyard DIY project. Here are some ideas to get your wheels turning. Alfresco Pizzeria As long as you’re up for a bit of masonry work, you can put together a component to your outdoor kitchen that will really kick things up a notch when entertaining. Who doesn’t love fresh, crispy brick-oven pizza? And what better way for you and your guests to enjoy a piping hot slice than in the great outdoors under a canopy of stars? The keys to success with this project are having a base that is solid enough to serve as a sturdy foundation and allowing the right amount of time during the various stages of the process to allow for proper curing. With some heavy lifting, careful adherence to manufacturer’s instructions and a touch of patience, you’ll be sinking your teeth into an alfresco-prepared pie before you know it. Major Components Needed: Concrete mix, cinder blocks, plywood, rebar, bricks or tile, stucco and oven kit

Tranquility Space The peacefulness of even the smallest of ponds is the perfect addition to a backyard oasis. There are a number of terrific features to choose from, including waterfalls and fountains that produce the pleasant sound of trickling water, fish for even more visual appeal and the addition of certain plants and flowers to attract wildlife. Don’t be intimidated by the process – the project can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it. What’s important to remember when selecting the location is to take into consideration its accessibility and viewability factors. Lay out the desired size and shape of the pond with a garden hose, rope or even a trail of sand so you can step back and assess what you are envisioning before you get to digging. Major Components Needed: Stone, sand, gravel or crushed stone, rock sealant, submersible pump and rubber liner (a pond kit will include several of these items, as well as instructions) Gaming Arena When friends and family are gathered for some quality time together, a little lively competition goes a long way. A classic game like horseshoes can be enjoyed in the convenience of your own backyard and with some panache when you apply some imagination, know-how and a touch of elbow grease. In order to do it up right, consider incorporating special features like backstops to make the arena more “official,” retaining walls that separate the area as a designated gaming spot and bordering landscaping that will dress it up. Of course, with horseshoes, you’re setting up two mirror-image pits, so you’ll need to keep that in mind when planning out both your location and your expenses.

NEW ARCHITECT IN TOWN London-based Gregory Phillips Architects, an award-winning team of highly skilled architects and designers, recently established an associate office in Los Angeles. The international firm, which specializes in timeless residential designs of the highest quality, is working on new-build homes in Malibu and the Hollywood Hills. To an Angeleno, Phillips’ homes might have the look and feel of an updated Mid-Century Modern, but with added luxury and trendsetting features that bring a refreshing new look to uber-luxury homes in California. One of the firm’s recent award-winning projects was the transformation of a spectacular contemporary residence on a picturesque 22-acre estate in Shropshire, England. Visitors experience an impressive introduction to the home’s architecture – a reflecting pool flanked by monolithic garden walls constructed of long, distinctive brick. “Our idea was to have the landscaping blend and interact with the building, blurring their boundaries and rooting the building to its site,” says Phillips, whose work is known for creating a connection between indoor and outdoor living. The residence’s layout includes four wings oriented for optimum sunlight, all accented by a coordinated palette of traditional materials, including timber, marble, brick, suede and leather. These are contrasted with the contemporary qualities of raw concrete, glass and stainless steel. The same bricks used externally were also incorporated inside – in walls, stairwells and fireplaces – to accentuate the visual ambiguity of indoor and outdoor living. The second project shown here is a new five-bedroom modernist home. Occupying a spectacular woodland site, it replaced a dwelling in which one of the clients grew up. At the center of the residence is a double-height entrance and dining hall, with 20-foot-tall sliding glazed doors, providing a connection between inside and out. According to the firm’s website, “our process is simple: we help you form a vision of how you’d like to live. Then we make it happen.”
