RESURGENCE OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE: PAUL WILLIAMS’ LASTING LEGACY IN L.A The early days of traditional architecture in America date to the 1600s, when the essence of the style was constantly changing with the country’s diversity. Some of the variations of traditional homes include Colonial and country styles. Known primarily for their symmetry and attention to historically accurate details, Colonial-style homes are formal, balanced and evenly proportioned. Country-style homes offer more simplicity and charm, often featuring simple, functional and efficient floor plans. One of the most prominent traditional architects was Paul Revere Williams, who made major contributions to the architecture of his native Los Angeles during a prolific five-decade career. Known as the architect to the stars in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, he designed homes for such Hollywood royalty as Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. Williams mastered multiple styles, including English Tudor, Spanish Colonial Revival and casual California ranch. His timeless traditional style often featured sweeping curved staircases and, according to a Los Angeles Times article, regardless of the architectural style, “each Williams house bears his unique stamp of gentility: opulence with restraint, sophistication and warmth.” Williams also contributed to the design or redesign of some of Los Angeles’ most iconic landmarks, including the Beverly Hills Hotel, LAX Theme Building, Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, the Shrine Auditorium and the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building. Today, Williams’ renewed name recognition attracts the quality-conscious high-end market, with A-list Hollywood stars like Denzel Washington and Ellen DeGeneres living in Williams-designed homes in recent years. One of the most notable Williams homes is a recently remodeled 30,000-square-foot mansion in Los Angeles’ Holmby Hills area, which comes with a price tag of $88 million.
