Santa Barbara is nestled between the lush and steep vertical rise of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. It’s not often that civic leaders are responsible for the united look and feel of a city, but following a landmark event in 1925, Santa Barbara leaders adopted an architectural image of the Spanish Colonial Revival style for its downtown, complementing the then-predominant residential styles of California bungalows, Victorians and Spanish-style homes built during the early decades of the 20th century.

ALL HAIL THE UBIQUITOUS BUNGALOW!

A while ago, I searched our local Multiple Listing Service for “bungalow-style” houses. What came up were dozens of houses, none of which, to me, looked anything like a bungalow. How could such a familiar style of house confuse so many agents?

Most bungalows are now about a century old. They’ve gone in and out of fashion. Many have been plastered over into “stuccalos.” When new, there were many distinct variants called “bungalows” that derived, generally, from rural Indian houses in the “Bengali” style: open plan and usually surrounded by porches or verandas. The style found wide acceptance in the United States from 1900 to 1930. Pattern books proliferated. A home shopper could order a custom house kit from Sears Roebuck or buy one locally from the Pacific Ready-Cut Home Company, which was the largest such enterprise in the United States.

The local variant, the California or Craftsman bungalow, can be spotted by looking for these features: wide, pitched or gable roof, sometimes with a smaller echo of the main roof at the front; wide eaves with protruding rafter tails, which are sometimes ogee cut; brackets under the gables; stylish wooden wall shingles and “arroyo rock” or “clinker brick” piers on the verandas. Half stories that popped above the main roof and had windows on all sides for warm weather use earned the moniker, “airplane bungalows.” The largest local bungalows such as Pasadena’s Gamble House were “ultimate bungalows.”

Some bungalow floor plans opened to the rear garden, which served not just to dry laundry but for leisure use. In this sense, bungalows are proto-Modern – harbingers of the Modern Movement’s rear-facing orientation. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the bungalow in light of the need for small, efficient, livable urban housing?
