A deep cleft in the Santa Monica Mountains, Topanga Canyon stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the San Fernando Valley. Twelve winding miles of narrow roadway are marked primarily by sage, chaparral and rocky outcrops. First occupied by the Tongva people, who called it “a place above,” Topanga’s allure has long captured the imagination of artists, entertainers and privacy seekers.
Surrounded on three sides by state park or conservancy lands, Topanga is a significant watershed, with Topanga Creek draining, undammed, into Santa Monica Bay. The community of Topanga, which sits near the upper crest of the roadway, has a population of approximately 8,000 (2020) in homes tucked into narrow, sylvan lanes. They range from hippie shacks and cabins to multi-acre compounds of exceptional architecture and unassailable seclusion.
Hollywood stars found respite in Topanga’s cottages as early as the 1920s, but it was arguably actor Will Geer who put Topanga on the map. Blacklisted by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s, Geer was forced to sell his home in Santa Monica, moving to acreage in Topanga, where he welcomed others
from the blacklist. They grew vegetables and planted ornamental gardens, built a theater – the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum – and Geer’s property became (and remains) a hub for artists of every ilk, from Woody Guthrie onward.
Lower Topanga, closer to the ocean, was once considered a sacred site and meeting ground by the Chumash people. In the 1800s, it was a Mexican rancho and in the early 1900s, a Japanese fishing village. Inexpensive rentals welcomed surfers, artists, poets and movie stars. When Lower Topanga was sold to California State Parks in 2001, residents were forced to relocate and homes razed for park land.
Upper Topanga has continued to attract more than its share of famous residents. While its commercial ventures are limited to two small shopping centers and a few restaurants, with no hotels or gas stations, the Canyon is beloved as a residential enclave and a hiking, biking, motorcycling and birdwatching destination.
