A neighborhood of large gracious residences just fi ve miles west of Downtown Los Angeles, Hancock Park is known as one of the most intact historic neighborhoods in the nation. In the 1920s, developer-philanthropist G. Allan Hancock subdivided Hancock Park. He donated the acreage around his childhood home, near the La Brea Tar Pits, to the county and it is now home to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He leased a portion of the area to the country club and established design principles that would assure the neighborhood’s character, soon realized in designs by architects such as Paul Williams, A.C. Chisholm and John Austin.
Its quiet and central location makes Hancock Park ideal for the residences of consuls general and several can be found in the area, including the 1928 Wallace Neff-designed home occupied by the Los Angeles British. Hancock
Park became the 23rd Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in the City of Los Angeles in 2007. Ninety percent of its homes and structures were identifi ed as being historic contributors in the Historic Resources Survey.
An affluent, well-educated population occupies the 1.59-square-mile neighborhood. The Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society works actively to preserve the district’s quality of life, with particular emphasis on historic residences. It covers Hancock Park and the adjacent enclaves of Windsor Village, Fremont Place, Brookside, Rancho La Brea and New Windsor Square. The Society bestows annual Landmark Awards recognizing residential and commercial buildings of particular historic, architectural or cultural significance.
The main shopping area is Larchmont Village, with numerous restaurants, boutiques, a weekly farmers market and a small-town feel. Since 1963, the area has been served by its own newspaper, the Larchmont Chronicle.
