Every creative venture requires inspiration – and that especially applies to decorating your home. Hunt for your favorite hues in places where you typically feel motivated and imaginative. As you explore palette choices, try crafting a mood board of your favorite shades to keep your ideas organized.

Look to Mother Nature.

Many design professionals agree that heading outdoors can rouse creative ideas for inside the home. Spend a little time outside and observe which tones you’re drawn to most. Soak in beautiful landscapes or flowers. Any color combination formed in nature can easily be translated into an interior arrangement and make for a soothing ambience.

Defer to a beloved pattern.

Whether it’s from your favorite wallpaper, dress or artwork, a preexisting pattern is likely to coordinate well. Even if the pattern incorporates disparate colors, a harmony can be found by applying a visual hierarchy: The largest tone fills the most space; as the others diminish in scale and size, they fill less space.

Consider your target vibe.

You want the hues in each room to correlate, emotionally and visually, so pinpointing the overall atmosphere you want for your home can guide you to a pleasing palette. Then you can determine which colors specifically convey each room’s appropriate mood.

The process of conceptualizing your perfect home palette also requires some technical observation.

Here are some additional steps to consider.

Sketch out a floor plan.

Understand and contemplate value.

Test your choices.

You’re almost ready to roll. But before laying a single stroke of paint to any of your walls, you’ll want to experiment. Buy a sample of your favorite shades and either paint each one on a small section of your walls or paint each sample onto pieces of posterboard to test them throughout each room and at different times of day. "Land of Gracious Living"

A small city in Orange County with a population of approximately 68,000 (2020), Yorba Linda is perhaps best known as the birthplace of former President Richard M. Nixon and site of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Indeed, it is a place that is rich with history. But it is also a city of unusual affl uence and a distinguished educational profi le.

Early missionaries and Spanish explorers found settlements of Luiseño, Tongva and Juaneño peoples throughout the coastal region of what is now Orange County. When Spanish land grants were awarded in the early 19th century, José Antonio Yorba was granted a spread of 62,000 acres.

As they farmed their expansive holdings, the Yorba family and other settlers saw periods of boom and bust development. Finally, in 1907, Porfi rio Yorba sold the property. The Janss Investment Co. of Los Angeles, envisioning a family community of small farms, subdivided the land and named the town Yorba Linda, after the fi rst family.

Ranch houses and citrus groves proliferated and the Pacifi c Electric Railroad, connecting Yorba Linda to Los Angeles, assured that growers could get their crops to market. The city continued to thrive through the early part of the 20th century, maintaining its small-town feel. Finally, in the 1960s, the town began to grow in earnest, and in 1967, Yorba Linda was incorporated as Orange County’s 25th city.

As the population grew, Yorba Linda and its surrounding neighbors responded by building a robust service economy and an extensive network of schools. Area high schools, community colleges, two large state universities, private colleges and many award-winning schools at every level serve a community with high expectations of its teachers and its children.

In addition to a well-educated population, Yorba Linda has been distinguished as one of the wealthiest U.S. cities and one of the richest in Orange County, and was once included on Money magazine’s list of America’s 50 best small cities. It is indeed the “Land of Gracious Living.”

When Southern Pacific Railroad was marking out the halfway point between Yuma, Arizona, and Los Angeles, they chose the spot in Riverside County that would eventually blossom into the city of Indio. But as more people were attracted to the area as a winter health resort, agriculture gave way to residential development and Indio found its true character as a recreational center.

Scheduled at the County Fairgrounds throughout the year, festivals draw an audience from throughout Southern California and beyond. Among the better-known festivals

are the Date Festival in February; Coachella Fest during two weekends in April/May; the Indio Powwow over Thanksgiving weekend and the Tamale Festival in December. Indio also hosts rodeos, music concerts and a variety of other popular events.

Known for its world-famous polo clubs and annual equestrian events, Indio also attracts golfers and bird-watchers in large numbers. It is a National Bird Sanctuary, with vast seasonal migrations of birds headed to the Salton Sea, as well as a gateway to the scenic and geologically important Joshua Tree National Park.

An estimated population of nearly 90,000 (2020) is served by elementary and middle schools that are highly rated under the California Distinguished Schools program. A strong sense of community and history supports the town’s Historic Mural Project, with colorful murals celebrating Indio’s railroad and agricultural origins decorating old town structures.
