Living eco-friendly doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the easiest and most efficient ecological solutions are right under your nose, or above your head – take the sun, for instance. This limitless ball of brilliant energy is a renewable resource just waiting to be tapped for its abundance. And Mother Earth never disappoints by providing us with many natural offerings that don’t need to sap the unsustainable. Here are a few favorite ways to get the most from what is plentiful while still giving back to the environment.
Harnessing the Sun's Power
Capture the potency of sunrays inside solar panels to generate star power –it’s the cleaner, greener way to go. Today, new innovations in panel designs offer more aesthetic options like solar shingles that mimic traditional ones. The sun’s strength is significant, especially in warmer sunny locations that get the lion’s share of bright light. So, use the surplus to harness solar power and keep your entire home running on clean energy instead of relying on fossil fuels. Get off the grid and use the sun to run your main electrical panel, water heater, lights, indoor heating and battery-charging units.
Even the pool gets fired up over the sun. A simple solar blanket will warm pool water, and a solar water circulation system raises temps, too, making the toe-dip pool test a thing of the past. And if keeping it cool rules inside your home, opt for high-performance solar window shades that work in your favor as well – a smart solution to control heat, protect from UV rays and save money. The bark has anti-microbial properties and acts as an insect repellant. Bamboo, like hardwood, is super durable and easy to install. Both renew in just three to five years.
Making a comeback in new patterns and colors is linoleum. It’s a natural, durable material made from linseed oil, cork dust, tree resins, wood flour, pigments and ground limestone. Another eco-friendly surface that dazzles is glass – easy to maintain and non-staining. And let’s not leave out polished concrete, recycled rubber and reclaimed wood. All are great flooring choices that lay the groundwork for responsible homeownership.
Charging It Up at Home
Street smarts drive this idea home: Plug your energy-efficient electric vehicle into your personal charging station to save the atmosphere from exhaust emissions. It’s a convenient way to be sure you have enough power for your commute if public charging stations aren’t nearby. Keep greenhouse gases down even more by using renewable resources to recharge your charging station – now that’s revving up environmental responsibility to a whole new level.

Coastal Master-Planned Community
With a name derived from the Spanish word for “lagoon” and a Native American village thought to have once occupied the area, Laguna Niguel is a city that values its roots. More than one-third of this master-planned community has been designated as open space, with miles of parks offering plenty of places for residents to participate in sports, gather with neighbors and generally appreciate nature.
Boasting a population of approximately 64,000 (2021), Laguna Niguel is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, surrounded by the cities of Aliso Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and Laguna Beach. Like most of the coastal cities in Southern California, it enjoys pleasant weather all year, allowing residents ample opportunities to take advantage of the lovely parks scattered throughout the community. Features of the popular Laguna Niguel Regional Park, which was opened to the public in 1973, include bicycle trails, a 44-acre lake, fishing piers, an amphitheater, volleyball courts and a
picturesque jogging trail. The Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is another local favorite and home to a historic landmark dubbed Dripping Cave, once used as a refuge by Native American hunter-gatherers. Designated as a wildlife sanctuary, the park also shelters a number of rare and endangered plants and animals.
Laguna Niguel was originally part of a Mexican land grant obtained by cattle rancher Juan Avila in 1842 and known at the time by the name of Rancho Niguel. Avila retained the land until a severe drought in 1865 decimated most of his herd. The property that is the modern-day location of the city changed hands several times over the decades since, until the Laguna Niguel Corporation made a significant land purchase in 1959 with the intent of creating one of the first master-planned communities in California. In December 1989, Laguna Niguel became the 29th incorporated city in Orange County.

A luxury resort and residential community in Southern California’s Coachella Valley, Indian Wells is known for its country-club lifestyle and its world-class tennis and golf. With a population of just 4,697 (2023), the city more than makes up for its small size with its sparkling reputation.
In historic times, the Cahuilla Indians had settlements throughout the Valley, but it was the discovery of gold on the Colorado River that led prospectors and eventually a stage line through the region. Indian Wells was an oasis for travelers – a stop along the trail that connected Los Angeles and the mines.
With its stately rows of date palms, the area attracted the attention of Hollywood’s elite and East Coast dwellers looking for a winter getaway, including then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower. By the 1950s, golf courses were opened at the Eldorado and Indian Wells country clubs, and Desi Arnaz opened the Indian Wells Hotel in 1957. The fi rst Bob Hope Desert Classic was played at Indian Wells Country Club in 1960, establishing the town’s reputation as a true sporting destination.
Today, Indian Wells hosts the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament and the BNP Paribas Open. The latter is played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, built in 2000 and expanded in 2013. The second-largest tennis-specifi c stadium in the world, it has 29 tennis courts, a 16,000-seat main stadium and an 8,000-seat stadium. Indian Wells is also the home of the only 36-hole public golf facility in California on Golfweek’s Top 20 “Best Courses You Can Play.”
In 1967, Indian Wells was incorporated as California’s 400th city. A variety of art attractions, including the annual Indian Wells Art Festival and a major collection displayed in the Club at the Indian Wells Golf Resort, supplement the dynamic selection of museums and galleries in neighboring cities such as Palm Desert and Palm Springs. Four luxury resorts, six residential country clubs, low crime and a variety of cultural programs make Indian Wells a rewarding place to visit – and live.
