TUSTIN The City of the Trees

With a panorama that includes the Pacific Ocean and the Saddleback Mountains, Tustin is a lively city of about 11 square miles in central Orange County, California. Located adjacent to Irvine and Santa Ana, it is less than 10 miles from Disneyland and about 33 miles to downtown Los Angeles. Easy access to freeways, Orange County’s John Wayne Airport and the Tustin Metrolink Station makes this city of 81,698 (2023) a desirable setting for Southern California living.

Once home to members of the Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño nations, Tustin’s history of contemporary settlement dates to 1868, when carriage maker Columbus Tustin moved from Northern California to purchase 1,300 acres of the newly partitioned Spanish land grant. Settling his family in the area, he laid out streets among the picturesque sycamores, established a post offi ce and school district, sold residential lots and had high hopes of earning the future city a place on the map as the southern terminus of the Southern-Pacifi c Railroad.

While that coveted prize went to Santa Ana, Tustin enjoyed renewed growth in the land boom of the 1880s. The city’s nickname, The City of the Trees, refers to that period, when it was fragrant with expansive orchards of apricots and walnuts, and later, Valencia oranges. Incorporated in 1927, Tustin has one of the oldest “old towns” in Orange County. In addition to Main Street’s grand historic homes and commercial storefronts, Tustin today offers a wide array of handsome residences and fl ourishing amenities, including easy access to South Coast Plaza, Fashion Island and Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The latter, not surprisingly, means that Tustin’s population includes a large number of Major League Baseball players and their families.

Named by Forbes as one of the top 25 towns to live well in America, the city is served by the Tustin Unifi ed School District, which is also the city’s largest employer. Tustin High School, known regionally for its strong Model United Nations program, is a California Distinguished School.
