Every creative venture requires inspiration – and that especially applies to decorating your home. Hunt for your favorite hues in places where you typically feel motivated and imaginative. As you explore palette choices, try crafting a mood board of your favorite shades to keep your ideas organized.

Look to Mother Nature.

Many design professionals agree that heading outdoors can rouse creative ideas for inside the home. Spend a little time outside and observe which tones you’re drawn to most. Soak in beautiful landscapes or flowers. Any color combination formed in nature can easily be translated into an interior arrangement and make for a soothing ambience.

Defer to a beloved pattern.

Whether it’s from your favorite wallpaper, dress or artwork, a preexisting pattern is likely to coordinate well. Even if the pattern incorporates disparate colors, a harmony can be found by applying a visual hierarchy: The largest tone fills the most space; as the others diminish in scale and size, they fill less space.

Consider your target vibe.

You want the hues in each room to correlate, emotionally and visually, so pinpointing the overall atmosphere you want for your home can guide you to a pleasing palette. Then you can determine which colors specifically convey each room’s appropriate mood.

The process of conceptualizing your perfect home palette also requires some technical observation.

Here are some additional steps to consider.

Sketch out a floor plan.

Note the features in each room and the immovable pieces that exist there – such as wallpaper, furniture or décor. If your bed frame is a particular color or tone, then you’ll want to be sure the hues in your arrangement can coexist with it. The same goes for any other prominent pieces of décor.

Understand and contemplate value.

As you put together your favorite mix of hues, it’s important to grasp the concept of value. Value is the relative degree of lightness or darkness of a color. When arranging a multi-color palette, use

a combination of values to maintain an attractive balance. Consider using a dark shade, a bright shade and a light shade in each room. If helpful, connect these ideas to the vibe you want in your home as you make selections.

Observe daily light changes.

Color is drastically impacted by light, so it is vital to understand what the primary light source is in every room. Consider how much daylight and artificial light each space receives in relation to the time of day it’s used most. A room with less sun exposure is typically darker and more shadowy, so using a warm combination would offset the shadows. Likewise, a room primarily occupied after sunset will be lit artificially, so bear in mind whether the light source is incandescent (redder, warmer) or fluorescent (bluer, cooler) and select your color scheme to best suit those hues.

Decide on a neutral.

Most any interior designer will advise that a successful in-home color palette – no matter how bold or complex – should include one neutral hue. These shades are (usually) timeless and tie together the other colors in your combination. With inevitable shifts in paint and décor trends, a neutral will give your palette more staying power. When fads fade, you can phase out trendy options while keeping your neutrals and general design intact.

Test your choices.

You’re almost ready to roll. But before laying a single stroke of paint to any of your walls, you’ll want to experiment. Buy a sample of your favorite shades and either paint each one on a small section of your walls or paint each sample onto pieces of posterboard to test them throughout each room and at different times of day. As you tackle this process, keep a color wheel handy to stay on track.

After you’ve done some informed, artistic deliberation, the home color scheme of your dreams will be within reach. You’ll be poised to paint to your heart’s content knowing you’ve covered some design best practices.

SCRIPPS RANCH

Located in the northeastern part of San Diego, Scripps Ranch is a residential community built around Lake Miramar, which is more commonly called the Miramar Reservoir. In addition to expansive views from its picturesque hills, Scripps Ranch is known for its extensive plantings of eucalyptus trees.

Originally settled by the Kumeyaay people thousands of years ago, Scripps Ranch is a community of more than 32,000 (2020). When newspaperman E.W. Scripps and his half-sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, purchased 400 acres (later much enlarged) of the ranchland, he was considered foolish for believing that this dry, stony, treeless landscape could ever amount to anything. Its central-courtyard architecture inspired by North African designs he had seen, what Scripps thought would be a winter home and a sort of utopia turned into a year-round residence. Completed in 1898 and extensively landscaped, Miramar was home to Scripps and several of his siblings over the years.

While Scripps Ranch once seemed remote, it is only 20 minutes from downtown, the beaches and San Diego’s main activity centers. Comprised of about 30

square miles, the area is primarily residential, with a limited commercial district at its borders. Many homes have attractive views and all are served by highly rated schools in the San Diego Unified School District.

The Miramar Reservoir, which manages water that originates from the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California Aqueduct, is a popular recreational facility. In addition to fishing and boating, it has picnic facilities and a popular 4.92-mile track used for bicycling, jogging, walking and rollerblading.

There is a strong feeling of community within Scripps Ranch and there are numerous well-attended activities and events, including holiday parades and weekly farmer’s markets. The Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club offers swimming, fitness, tennis, racquetball and a variety of before- and after-school activities as well as family events.
