Fortunately, the size and central location of this former principal gathering room typically allow for plenty of practical new purposes.

Sophisticated Coastal Retreat
The beachside town of Del Mar is small and quaint enough to aptly be termed a village. With a stunning perch on the coastline, a plethora of dining and shopping options, as well as a captivating history, this haven by the sea is thought to have all the European flair of the Riviera.
New Yorker Theodore Loop was immediately struck by the beauty of the place while planning a railroad route to connect the cities of San Diego (just south of Del Mar) and Los Angeles. He and New Mexico rancher Jacob Taylor both recognized its enormous potential as a resort town. Acting on these instincts, Taylor purchased land in 1885 and built the area’s first resort, Casa Del Mar, the following year. The popular vacation destination was a success until a devastating fire burned it to the ground in 1889.
Two decades later, another enterprising developer picked up where Taylor left off, constructing the glamorous Stratford Inn on the hill overlooking the beach, where the Hollywood elite would come to swim and holiday in style. During the 1920s and 30s, when the Stratford Inn further evolved into the Hotel Del Mar,
the town’s population would swell from just a few hundred to almost 2,000 in the summertime. The property is now home to the luxury resort L’Auberge Del Mar, continuing the coastal village’s long tradition of sophisticated leisure.
Amid the bustle of the 1930s, Del Mar was chosen as the new site for the San Diego County Fair and has continued to host it ever since, drawing nearly a million visitors during June and July. Another famed area attraction is the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, completed just a year after the fair opened. It too brings in fans from all over the world each summer to partake in the excitement of the racetrack at lovely Del Mar, where “the turf meets the surf.”
Historic and charming Del Mar Village offers a variety of unique shops, upscale and casual dining, and luxury hotels, with many boasting spectacular views of the picturesque coastline. Del Mar is also home to popular events throughout the year, including Summer Solstice, Summer Twilight Concerts, Taste of Del Mar and Santa by the Sea.
