A small beach community in the city of San Diego, Ocean Beach has plenty of personality and the casual beach atmosphere of 1950s Southern California. Known as “O.B.” by the locals, who call themselves “OBceans” or “OBecians” (pronounced oh-bee-shuns), the area was originally called Mussel Beach for its abundant mollusks.
Located at the estuary of the San Diego River, Ocean Beach is known for its antiques, its feral parrots and its Municipal Pier — the longest concrete pier on the West Coast, at 1,971 feet — which celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2022.
Native Americans, in particular Kumeyaay (later known as Diegueño), were well established in the San Diego area for thousands of years before Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed his ship in San Diego Bay in 1542. In 1769, Father Junípero Serra established Mission San Diego and it was the missionaries and soldiers who began the expanded settlement of the region.
In 1887, Frank Higgins and Billy Carlson mapped the streets, gave their “town” the name Ocean Beach and began selling lots. Many of O.B.’s Craftsman
bungalows and cottages were built over the next 40 years, though the population rose and fell with the economy. In the early 20th century, David Collier encouraged a revival of interest in Ocean Beach by paving roads, and bringing in electricity and a streetcar line.
Promoted as a resort town, Ocean Beach was briefl y the site of an impressive amusement park, Wonderland. After it “washed away,” Newport Avenue became the focus of activity and gradually visitors turned into residents. Today, a two-block stretch of Newport Avenue is known as the Ocean Beach Antique District, with the largest concentration of antiques dealers in San Diego County.
With the dredging of Mission Bay, construction of I-5 and subsequent development, Ocean Beach became somewhat cut off from the rest of San Diego. Undaunted, the community thrived, resisting large chain stores and encouraging down-home traditions such as parades, farmers’ markets and small-town friendliness.
