OLIVENHAIN Estate Living Amid Rural Beauty
One of five communities that together form Encinitas, CA, Olivenhain is primarily a residential neighborhood of single-family custom homes on large lots. Narrow roads wind through scenic rolling hills overlaid with an extensive network of hiking and equestrian trials in this community known for its historic sites, hot-air balloons and stunning starry nights preserved by a dark-sky policy.
Once part of Rancho Las Encinitas, Olivenhain (“olive grove”) was settled by German-speaking colonists from Denver in the 1880s. Started by a group of seven men, the colony had grown to 67 men, women and children by the time they boarded the westbound train in Denver. At the end of their ride, the settlers had to make do with three small adobe buildings constructed decades earlier.
Undaunted, the colonists cleared the land, established farms and began building houses, some of standard sizes, but most much smaller, known as shanties. While early settlement was not without its fraudulent entrepreneurs and economic challenges, the community remained close-knit, and some of today’s residents are descended from those families.
With its two-lane roads and split-rail fences, Olivenhain feels more like rural horse country than an upscale residential neighborhood. Hallmarks of the neighborhood include low-density zoning and little commercial development within its confines. Though property values are high, Olivenhain’s custom-built residences are less uniform than in other nearby communities. There are numerous small ranches, horse properties and hillside homes providing spectacular ocean views.
Residents enjoy access to many trails. There is an equestrian park, walking and biking trails, off-leash dog facilities, plus part of the 979-acre San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve – one of San Diegos's largest wetlands – is within Olivenhain. The Encinitas beaches are a few miles away and Olivenhain homeowners can take advantage of recreational centers such as the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, the San Diego Botanic Garden and Batiquitos Lagoon.
