The area is well-lit by floor lamp to emphasizing its place at night. The shades created by the altitude differences by the steps add funs to the site. Not every tree in the area under the woods is lit to create a private place. The interval lights ensure both brightness and privacy. The streamline-shaped seats are lit by led strip lights, which looks like a silk ribbon at night and enriches the dynamic effect. The small arbor scattered make the entire area look like a necklace with a gem pendant. The flowers stands are the higher structures near the site. Using wall washer lights instead of street lamps is the way to attract tourists faraway by revealing the entire figure better. We hope that dining with characters and accommodation are available at the wetland for us to spend the holiday with families and friends...... We are high school or college students. We need a space to relax and lighter our load. We also need an on-site classroom to facilitate the course or research requirements...... We are officer works and hope to find place to relax after work. We also need space for business to bring our clients to work with leisure...... We are pensioners and hope there is a activity center emphasizing our community to provide recreational events...... SITE ISSUES 1. The site function is degraded to residence and farming. has lost the functions of wetland and city parks for recreation. 2. The connection between sites needs improvement since it does not close a ring internally. 3. Over the past, The uncontrolled land conversion from forest to farmlands and industrial lands cause the reduction of species for both plants and animals. The eco-system has been severely damaged. 4. The water and land are heavily polluted due to the direct drainage of waste gas and water caused by farming and industrial activities. 5. The rivers in the wetland are connected with the ones in the city causing some of the city waste water flows into the wetland. STRATEGIES
Located at the northeastern corner, a space is divided out by plants. The sunken design designated the space with the rest to increase privacy.
The steps and tree pool divide the bar into two areas. The one of the entrance provides seats for music for friends to spend time together. The one beyond the steps is relatively quiet for social events. PERSPECTIVE VIEWS
The outdoor pool is located at the activity area at the roof of the building. The boundless design can provide better view with lawn. The shade structure creates the ambienece of holiday for the entire area.
The area with the richest landscape elements. A space is created to simulate the nature by incorporating water landscape, water corridors and the plants.
The water landscape with character divided the dining and resting area wisely. The water landscape does not only improve the environment but also provide rich view.
The area is designed into waiting area by diverting the vehicles both ways using plant stripe.
The tree grille is designed to locate at the entrance square. The design is not only to softening the visual perception of the vast hard parquet of the square but also not to influence the people passing by.

Mixed orchard in the 13th century
Became the first public square in England in 1630
WHAT'S CURRENT ISSUE?
The huge central market occupies the centre of Covent Garden, resulting in the surrounding square becoming a passageoriented space through which dense crowds pass but rarely linger, and the square seems to have lost its ability to attract people
The open-air market gradually formed after the Great Fire of London in 1666
Old market in the 18th century New market
INSPIRATION
The urban picking garden designed by German designer Atelier Le Balto successfully revitalises the square in the northern inner city of Essen. As a project to promote cooperation and neighbourliness , residents and visitors can plant and pick fruit and vegetables, making the square more attractive to residents.
I'm a resident of this community and covent garden is a place I come to regularly, it always attracts a lot of visitors. As a resident, I would prefer to have some green space here, because the buildings take over the whole area and you can hardly find any green space.
It is our first time in covent garden and the architecture is amazing. The historical buildings and shops are a perfect combination and we are able to not only shop but also eat a lot of food there. Other than that, there is nothing that attracted us to the square. We felt that it was more like a passage connecting the central market to the surrounding buildings.
The historical buildings around the square have been perfectly preserved, which is what I really like about it. But when I walked around the square I felt a lack of interaction with the place as there was no landmark, no seating and no plants.
The area is rich in history and the historic buildings have been well preserved.
Covent Garden is a large shopping centre with a wide range of shops that attract a lot of foot traffic
Covent Garden has a rich cultural scene with street performances dating back to 1662 and is surrounded by 13 theatres.
Assets Conclusion challenges
The entire site is surrounded by dense roads and buildings with few large green spaces around the perimeter and only scattered pieces of green fragments.
There is a high level of activity at the edge of the square, but the particular spatial structure makes the square a passing space where few people want to stop
The high level of commercial development and cultural and creative industries has led to an economic boom in the area, but has also led to the loss of the square's ability to attract people and the catastrophic destruction of biodiversity
CONCEPT
The historical context of the covent garden, the orchard and the market are integrated into a landscape that revitalises the square. It’s renewal will draw attention to the disappearing culture of the orchard and tackle the ecological and biodiversity issues brought about by urbanisation, while allowing people to participate directly in the process of growing and processing food and raising awareness of the provenance and traceability of food.

ARTISTIC CREATION
A six-month 'observation programme' will run in conjunction with schools in the community, where children will be invited to come and spend half a day each month to record the types and numbers of animals they can observe. In the final month, the children can compare the changes in the animals they have recorded over a period of six months.
The springtime blossom is one of the most exquisite delights of English spring, with fruit trees in the orchards among the first to bloom This would make a great springtime subject and we will invite art lovers to come and create art.
We welcome residents, local schools, and volunteers to adopt fruit trees from the orchard and work with our landscape contractors to maintain the plants.
Some of the apple trees in the orchard can be trained and we will inform you in advance of the training sessions on our website. Interested visitors can come, watch, and learn how our experts train the apple trees.

We will be holding a number of apple-related events to make the square more attractive and draw attention to the importance of the orchard to the urban biodiversity
The history of Covent Garden is as inextricably linked to apples as the English are to alcohol, so come along to a 'cider party' where we will be serving traditional cider and apple delicacies. We also have staff in traditional costumes and live performances about the history of the Covent Garden.
In 1656, Covent Garden had an open space market. We will be re-introducing and holding occasional open-air market events.
We will be teaching the method of making traditional jam at the market, simply buy apples on site to take part in the class and make your own finished apple jam to take home and share with your family.
We will have different street performances, which have been going on since 1662 and have never been interrupted.
In autumn, the harvest season for orchards, is a time when people have easy direct access to food sources. A picking event in a busy city centre will remind the visitors of the rich history of the covent garden as an orchard.
The hot season is perfect for sports. We hold "Orchard Olympics" on weekends with sports for all ages such as Apple and spoon race and Apple bobbling.
►Covent garden community association arranges 10 volunteers on site daily
►Five security officers will be on the square each day to ensure visitor safety
►Landscape contractor to check the security of the facilities twice per day
►The landscape contractor, together with volunteers, is responsible for maintaining all the plants on site.
►Regular activities on different themes related to apples.
►Record real visitor feedback and analyse it after the event.

APPLE CARNIVAL
The first official Apple Day was held in Covent Garden on 21st of September 1990, when fruit was brought back to the market after 16 years' absence. This time we will bring the orchard back to the square to demonstrate that we are in danger of losing, not simply in orchard, but in the richness and diversity of landscape, ecology and culture too
Date: 16th September - 25th September 2023

APPLE TASTING
You can join our picking programme from 10am-5pm. Advance booking is required and there will be a limit of 30 pickers per day. This is not a free event and costs 20 pounds, but you will be accompanied throughout the event by a staff member who will introduce you to each type of apple grown in our orchard and you will be able to pick as many as 3 apples as you like. The aim of the event is to restore the covent garden to its early days as an orchard and to draw attention to the decline in biodiversity caused by the loss of the orchard. TERM)
The tasting area is set up on the north side, where there is a large space for display and activities. Visitors can taste different varieties of apples from different orchards for free, meet directly with the orchard owners and exchange information about the history and stories of the apples of interest, and we allow the orchard owners to sell their apples on site, so that visitors can buy apples according to their personal preferences. This direct interaction between the consumer and the orchard owner is an effective way to raise awareness of the origin of the food.
STREET PERFORMANCE
The street performance in the small square has a history of 350 years.

HARVEST EVENT
APPLE STORY
At 11am and 2pm, a professional will be available to share the story of Covent Garden and apples in open space.
ORCHARD OLYMPICS
There will be a Balance Apple On Head competition in the maze from 3pm4pm. The game was inspired by a photo of a Covent Garden market porter from 1925, the porters of the time would carry as many empty baskets on their heads as possible back to the waiting carts and trucks after delivering the goods to the final buyer.
Our game is played in groups of 8 people, holding apples on their heads and setting off at the same time. Whoever can escape from the maze the fastest will be the ultimate winner, during which time they must not use their hands to hold the apples or let them fall, otherwise they will be treated as failures and the winner will receive a bag of apples. The transformation of Covent Garden's role from orchard to market is thought-provoking, and we hope to draw attention to the disappearing culture of the orchard through this transformation.
