Starting Block Teammate: Zhiyi He 2019 IIDA “Fit for the Future“ Student Award Winner _ Merit Award Starting Block proposes an innovative community for dream pursuers which rethinks the relationship between work and life in the future. People always look for a balance between work and life. The word “balance“ already indicates that one should sacrifice the other to reach the same level. What Starting Block wants to offer is a community engagement that seamlessly blends work and life together. It provides a unique lifestyle that combines co-living and co-working spaces. By doing that, it minimizes expenses on rents of housing and working, transportation between office and home. And on the other hand, it maximizes capacities of sharing resources, possibilities of more exposure in the community and opportunities to connecting the world. Hopefully, it will encourage the new generation to pursue their goal for at least one step closer to their dreams.

The community has been developed into a three-layer structure, including public, community, and pod which better serves different groups of people and exposes the community to the society as much as possible. What’s more, the community also functions as a convention center when inviting outside investors. The significant development of various hitech in their period, such as AR, AI, and 5G has brought along with tons of possibilities in different fields which stimulate the new creative generation to start their own business in the future.

Each resident lives in a 24’ by 18’ individual pod. Though the pod is small, it features more than six different activities including information exchange, focusing, relaxing, presenting, exploring, collaborating, etc. for residents to live and work better. In order to achieve different interior layouts for different activities within a limited space, we introduce the digitalcontrol furniture system inspired by Lift-Bit into every pod. The goal is to specify each activity and design specifically based on different needs to define a unique user experience.

“Living Palette
The color scheme in the pod is neutral and muted. The general material palette is identical for every pod. However, residents are free to decorate their own pod through colorful handwriting, sketches and stickers on the vertical surfaces. We unify the general look but provide flexibilities for residents to specialize their pod and show-off their personalities through interior looks. It is your start-up office but at the same time it is also your home.

Bathroom, as a tiny space in a small pod, also features several design details. No matter when you are taking shower or using toilet, there is always a surface for you to capture the spark in your mind for that second. From smart mirror, to writable glass wall, then to magnetic power wall, we aim at recording your innovative thoughts anywhere and anytime we are. Everyone works differently, and we believe that some great ideas come from bathroom.

Filtraciรณn is a rainwater harvesting system located in Costa Rica with a typical long rain season and beautiful natural environment. The space is created for protecting visitors from the harsh environment when necessary but still encouraging people to communicate with the natural world. AR technology has also been introduced into the space for visitors to learn more about the wildlife. The structure is movable and depending on the degree of the rotation, the space will be divided into different indoor and outdoor percentages.

Muse Hotel CCA Division of Architecture | 2018 Comprehensive Development Award Winner Focused on creating spaces and atmosphere for both reflection and interaction, the hotel’s program is organized vertically with an emphasis on the transition between socially active zones of high-visibility, and peaceful personal retreat spaces. At the highest level are the most personal and relaxing spaces - the guest rooms and SPA. In the center of the hotel are the transition spaces - the art gallery and pool. The various programs allow for a mixture of conditions and serve as a transition between the most personal and private space of the guest rooms, to the most social and open space of the public pier level.

FANTASY is a high technology school located in 1725-1733 Broadway, Oakland, supported by Kapor Center. The project was developed based on the Augmented Reality technology, taking advantage of this innovative technology to connect the physical and virtual world. The buildings have been divided into two functions, the north building is specifically focused on education, educating students from the Kapor Center on programing AR technology; the south building is focused on business technology, providing professional AR support for business and retail customers. Both buildings insist on creating an AR experience space for people to learn and explore more possibilities of the AR program.

Cloud is the ceiling installation designed for the startup “Utopia“ located in San Francisco, US. As the primary entrance of the firm, the ceiling of the staircase plays a critical role in indicating the brand value. The new ceiling feature not only identifies the space with the firm, silently shouts out to their mentality, but also adds interesting spatial elements, dramatic light and shadow to emphasize the collaborative and creative experience.
