The Northern Studios

A major new film & television production centre - right on campus! As this publication goes to print, The Northern School of Art is pushing ahead with an exciting plan to establish a major film and television production facility in the North East. A planning application has been submitted for ‘The Northern Studios’ a new 30,000 sq. ft. film and television studio and production facility in Hartlepool, which, if approved, will be the only one of its kind in the region.

Stage 1 - 21, 500 sq. ft. sound stage Stage 2 - 4,300 sq. ft. green screen & immersive technical filming studio Tech Shed - an industrial workshop with body scanners, liquid metal printing and robotic CNC

What does this mean for you? As an undergraduate on one of our courses you will have access to a range of industry-standard, highly specialised technical equipment for stage, screen and events production.

You will have the opportunity to work with your fellow undergraduates from across the creative community - including film, theatre, television production, visual effects, photography, sound and lighting - to create amazing productions across the different media channels and formats. It is intended that the studios will be used by the ever-growing number of major commercial production companies who film and work in the North East - potentially, you will have access to working studios right on your doorstep!

The North East a popular filming location

The dramatic coastline, wild northern moors, docks, harbours, woodlands and quaint seaside villages standing alongside the awe-inspiring structures for the steel, oil and chemical industries of Hartlepool and the wider North East has already seduced filmmakers, directors, writers, artists, story-tellers and photographers - from Sir Ridley Scott’s classic ‘Blade Runner’ to Joe Wright’s award-winning ‘Atonement’.

Some of the other film and television productions recently shot in the North East include: ‘Vera’, ‘Victoria’, ‘Inspector George Gently’, ‘Phantom Thread’, ‘Avengers’, ‘Transformers’, ‘The Dumping Ground’ (CBBC), ‘Alien’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Harry Potter’.

In year one, you will learn about workflow for both digital and darkroom applications-we will provide film, paper and the associated chemistry to help you do this. This is supported by a programme of technical workshops and academic seminars. You will study the history of photography and produce a group exhibition of framed works to a professional standard.

Course of the Year 2017

This course is a successor to the 2016/17 award-winning programme.

In year two, you will make a short film and produce a photographic publication (book) around the theme of a chosen subject area. This is supported by critical investigation of how to read photographs and understand the importance of images and the various uses and applications in the world today.

In your final year, you will then work towards creating a professional portfolio and an exhibition as you start to consider your independent practice and prepare for employment and/or further study.

Interview Preparation

This is your opportunity to evidence your visual and creative ability in the form of a portfolio of work. To help you prepare for this, we send all applicants a useful guide with the interview confirmation letter. Your interview with us is intended to be relaxed and informal. You will be asked general questions regarding your application to us, some questions about yourself, your inspirations and aspirations. This may include information about artists or designers that you admire, and what it is about their work that inspires you.

Portfolio Advice

A portfolio is individual to every student. Everyone will have their own individual styles and will have produced work in different ways, which we actively encourage. Your portfolio should be a visual representation of your creative identity and should include the following: 1. Development of ideas and creative thinking i.e. sketchbook work, drawings, annotations, photography 2. A range of appropriate skills and techniques you have previously developed 3. Your approach to the creative process i.e. concept, research, ideas development, experimentation of techniques and final outcome 4. Ability to take risks 5. Evidence of written work 84 / 85
