The creative sector is the UK’s flagship industry – as a nation we are world famous for our designers, artists and film makers. This is reflected in the scale and growth of the sector in recent decades – the creative economy employs 2.2 million people and has grown year-on year through the recession. By 2022 the sector will need 1.2m new workers. It is an industry that depends on its graduate skills – 58.8% of jobs in the sector are at least graduate level (compared to 31.8% in the wider economy) – by 2022 it will need an additional 900,000 graduates to keep pace with demand.
The creative industries contribute

INTERVIEW AND PORTFOLIO ADVICE: Your Interview After we receive your UCAS form, an interview will be arranged, which enables you to see the outstanding facilities, meet our staff and current students, and view the latest work. It provides us with an opportunity to discuss your portfolio, find out more about you and establish the best degree route for you. Interview Preparation Your interview with us is intended to be relaxed and informal. One of the main things we want to know is why you have chosen to apply for the programme. It is good practice to do a bit of background research on the programme by reading the prospectus or attending an open day so we can make sure you are on the right track. We also like to know what activities you engage in to feed your cultural appetite. This may include: • Who or what inspires your work? • What TV shows, theatre productions/films are you excited about? • What books, magazines, and newspapers do you read? • Have you volunteered for anything? • What gigs/festivals do you attend? • What galleries and museums have you been to? • What artists and designers have you researched? • When have you worked well in a team?
Portfolio Advice A portfolio is individual to every student. Everyone will have their own individual styles and will have produced work in different ways, which we actively encourage. Your portfolio should be a visual representation of your creative identity and should include the following: 1. Development of ideas and creative thinking i.e. sketchbook work, drawings, annotations, photography 2. A range of appropriate skills and techniques you have previously developed 3. Your approach to the creative process i.e. concept, research, ideas development, experimentation of techniques and processes; and final outcome 4. Ability to take risks 5. Evidence of written work Additionally, including work completed outside of your usual studies is a good way to show independence and self-motivation. If your work is too heavy or too awkward to bring to interview, you can always bring photographs instead. Even though our degrees are mainly practice based, you will have written tasks to complete over your chosen programme. You will need to make lecture notes and write essays; with a dissertation in the final year. Written work for interview could be: • An extract taken from an essay previously completed during your studies. • A reflective piece of self-evaluation from one of your projects • A report, journal, blog or script • All should be word processed 500-1000 words
Undergraduate Guide 2019-20
Presentation
Audition Advice
Portfolios can be presented in a variety of ways. However, you should consider the following:
Applicants for BA (Hons) Acting Stage & Screen will be invited to an audition. We do not charge an audition fee.
Organise work logically If you organise your work into a logical order that demonstrates your thinking processes, it will allow for a better flow of discussion during interview. Does it represent you? Let your portfolio reflect your own individual style. Include personal projects and give it a sense of originality. Sometimes including unusual elements can be intriguing and create interesting conversation. Remember! Be practical - it’s likely that you will be attending other interviews and you may have to carry your portfolio for a long distance. Thinking about the weight of your portfolio may encourage you to think ‘quality not quantity’. It’s usually better to have a few really interesting things to talk about than lots of the same. Sketchbooks Sketchbooks are a great way to demonstrate your creative process, and we strongly encourage you to bring them along with you. Quite often, sketchbooks can offer a different dimension to your portfolio and there may be some element of ‘magic’ within them that may be missing from your main portfolio i.e. areas of significant research or creative thinking.
For the audition you are required to prepare 3 contrasting monologues: • A Classical piece • A Contemporary piece • A piece from a Film or TV programme You will be asked to perform two of these pieces and they should last no longer than 2 minutes each. The Classical piece should be Elizabethan or Jacobean (for example Shakespeare, Marlowe, Webster) and preferably in blank verse. Your Contemporary piece should come from a published play produced post 1980 although the more recent the better. The Film/TV monologue will be recorded and should be from a film or TV show that is appropriate for you. It is recommended to steer clear of super hero films and also this should not be an impression of the actor but instead your interpretation of the speech. With the monologues try to choose pieces that suit your age and showcase your skills. You will perform the Classical and Film/TV monologues to our panel and may be re-directed in one of them. The Contemporary monologue may or may not be asked for but please have it prepared in case the panel want to see your range. You will also take part in a movement session lasting approximately 45 minutes. This is an opportunity for you to get a taste for what a typical session will be like and for the lecturer to assess your physical theatre skills.
More information on the on interview/audition and portfolio preparation is available at our website or contact the Admissions Team: Email: interviews@ccad.ac.uk URL: hartlepool.ccad.ac.uk/apply/ Call: 01429 422 000
