4.1 God Is Our King Part of The Big God Story 1 Samuel 10:17–25 For many years, prophets and judges led the Israelites. Then, the people decided they really wanted to be led by a human king. God chose a man named Saul to be the first king of Israel.

• Prior to having a king in place, the Israelites were led by judges and prophets. • Scripture tells us that God had plans to establish a monarchy in Israel even before the Israelites asked God for their king. • As the Israelites felt the threat of approaching enemies, they were no longer content to wait on God’s timing and demanded a king immediately.

Teachable Moments After reading the passage, discuss the following together: • Why did the people want a king?

Your child may enjoy hearing Bible stories but may have trouble understanding some of them. Read stories from a children’s Bible and be sure to spend time answering her questions as you read.
