CALVARY CHAPEL DISCIPLESHIP SERIES BOOK THREE LIVING WITH POWER CHAPTER ONE FAITH AND ASSURANCE

FAITH and ASSURANCE Faith is an absolutely essential element in our walk with God. Faith is the lifeline that connects us to God; it’s the conduit that allows the power and promises of God to flow into our lives. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”Hebrews 11:6 Assurance is also a very important part of our walk with God. Assurance is the certainty that I have received eternal life through Jesus Christ and that nothing will ever separate me from God. It’s knowing that I have passed from death to life and I will never be condemned with the wicked. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24 “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:12-13

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 The study of the Word of God is one of the most exciting pursuits in the Christian life. Through its pages we can discover who God is and what He requires of His children. Through its principles we can learn great wisdom and instruction on how to live a godly life. Through its power we find the resource for spiritual growth and service that helps us mature and make a difference in this world for Christ. The Bible is a great spiritual treasure, a delight and blessing to every child of God who studies it! “…I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Job 23:12 “ I rejoice at Your Word as one who finds great treasure.” Psalm 119:162 In order to get the most out of our Bible, we need to recognize its importance, and examine the various methods and resources available to help us to be “a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of truth.” THE IMPORTANCE OF BIBLE STUDY The Power of Studying the Bible Write out the following verses and meditate on what they are saying.

The Purpose of Studying the Bible 1. To know God and what He requires of us. “We do not read the Bible to circle the precious promises, although there are many, nor do we read it to learn Bible doctrine, although that is essential. We read the Bible to get to know the heart and mind of God.” Warren Wiersbe 2. To be equipped for every good work Write out 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 3. To be ready to give an answer Write out 1 Peter 3:15 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 4. To keep us from sin Write out Psalm 119:9, 11 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ THE METHODS OF BIBLE STUDY General Bible Study Method 1. Find a quiet place—Matthew 14:23 2. Begin with prayer and worship—Nehemiah 8:1-8 Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

17

3. Read and meditate on the passage—Psalm 1:1-3; 119:15, 23, 27, 148 4. Keep things in context—Acts 20:27 5. Record your observations and discoveries—Deut. 6:6-9 6. Seek not only correct interpretation but also proper application—James 1:22 “It’s not how you mark your Bible that counts, but rather how your Bible marks you!” Greg Laurie Devotional Bible Study Method This method simply requires you to study a short portion of your Bible. Read and re-read the passage, prayerfully meditating on it until the Holy Spirit shows you a way to apply the truth to your life. Then write out a personal application. This method is best applied while reading and studying daily through a book or passage, and is not designed to be academic but rather personal and devotional. This is a method allowing God to speak to you personally. Be careful; never ask, “What does it mean to me?” But rather, “What does it mean, and how does it apply to me?” • Pray for insight and application (God desires to speak to you, let the Spirit guide you) • Meditate by reading and re-reading the passage (to help you understand what the passage is saying • Apply by writing out how this passage and the truth in it can apply to you. • Memorize a verse out of the passage that God spoke to you through.

Inductive Bible Study Method This Bible study method is a more in-depth, academic approach of seeking to understand the meaning of a passage or verse. It requires slowing down to really look at what the passage is saying. In Inductive study, the Bible itself is the primary source of information and commentaries and study helps are used only as sounding boards for your own observations and conclusions. Inductive study requires that you continually record what you observe and learn. 1. Observation—What does the text say? This is attempting to see the big picture by observing what is obvious. Asking the questions: Who? What? Where? Why? When? And How? Reading and rereading a passage, noting people, places, and events; noting repeated words and looking for key words. Looking for things that are related and things that are different, grouping verses together based on subject, all to discover what the text is saying. Then assign a key theme or subject title for each chapter, for each paragraph, and for each verse. Record your findings on a sheet of paper or develop an overview chart for the book or passage you are studying. 2. Interpretation—What does the text mean? This is checking to see if your observations were correct and seeking to make sure you really understand what the text means. There are cultural and social differences between modern times now and the times of the Bible, we need to make sure we understand those differences. This is when you will check crossreferences, making sure your observations fit within the context of the whole Bible and do not contradict any other portion of Scripture. Consult a commentary or a Bible dictionary, do in-depth word studies, all of which will help you gain a better understanding of what the passage means. Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

19

3. Application—How does the meaning apply to me? Once you understand the meaning of a text, it’s much easier to apply it to your own life! Application is not just learning what the text means, it’s making the meaning relevant to you. This is when we ask questions like: “Is there a promise to claim? A command to follow? A sin to confess and repent of ? A principle to apply? An example to follow?” Then do it! Read Mark 4:35-41. Now answer the following questions from the passage: Who? Who is speaking and what are they saying? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ What? What is happening? What are the events taking place and in what order? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Where? 20

Where is the event taking place? Where are the people involved going to or coming from? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ When? When did the event take place? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Why? Why is this story included? Why here in the text? Why does the person speaking say what they do? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ How? How does this truth relate to me? What difference would it make in my life if I were to apply this truth? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

Other Bible Study Methods The Chapter Summary Method—Read a chapter of a Bible book through at least five times, then write down a summary of the central thoughts you find in it. The Character Quality Method—Choose a character quality you would like to work on in your life and study what the Bible says about. The Thematic Method—Select a Bible theme to study. Then think of three to five questions you’d like to have answered about the theme. Next study all the references you can find on your theme and record the answers to your questions. The Biographical Method—Select a Bible character and research all the verses about that person in order to study their life and characteristics. Make notes on their attitudes, strengths, and weaknesses. Then apply what you have learned to your own life. The Topical Method—Collect and compare all the verses you can find on a particular topic. Organize your conclusions into an outline that you can share with another person. The Word Study Method—Study the important words of the Bible. Find out how many times a word occurs in Scripture and how it is used. Find out the original meaning of the word. The Book Background Method—Study how history, geography, culture, science, and politics affected what happened in Bible times. Use Bible reference books to increase your understanding of the Word. The Book Survey Method—Survey an entire book of the Bible by reading it through several times to get a general overview of its Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

22

contents. Study the background of the book and make notes on its contents. The Chapter Analysis Method—Master the contents of a chapter of a book of the Bible by taking an in-depth look at each verse in that chapter. Tear each verse apart word by word, observing every detail. The Book Synthesis Method—Summarize the contents and main themes of a book of the Bible after you have read it through several times. Make an outline of the book. This method is done after you have used the Book Survey Method and Chapter Analysis Method on every chapter of that book. THE RESOURCES OF BIBLE STUDY Bibles 1. Study Bible- a good study Bible will include a Concordance, Cross-references, Topical Index, Commentary and Study Helps (Maps, Charts, Word Studies, Background Info. Etc) 2. Translations- KJV (King James Version); NKJV (New King James Version); NIV (New International Version); NASB (New American Standard Version); NLT (New Living Translation); AMP (Amplified Bible) 3. Suggestions: The Open Bible; The New Scofield Study Bible; The John MacArthur Study Bible; The Thompson Chain Reference Bible; The Ryrie Study Bible. Concordance A concordance is an exhaustive index, in alphabetical order, of every word in the Bible giving every reference to every passage where that word may be found. It is useful for finding a word or for where the same word exists in other passages of the Bible.

Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

23

A Concordance also gives a brief definition of each word in the Bible by referencing to the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries in the back. These reference numbers are useful in other word study books. Suggestions: The New Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible; The New King James Exhaustive Concordance; Zondervan NIV Exhaustive Concordance. Bible Dictionary and Encyclopedia These are study resources formatted in alphabetical order and detailing many words, customs, topics, people, and traditions in the Bible. They offer historic, geographical, cultural, biographical, and archeological information. Suggestions: Halley’s Bible Handbook; Unger’s Bible Hand Book; Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary. Commentaries A commentary is a scholarly interpretation of the Bible. Its purpose is to explain and interpret a biblical passage by analyzing the words used, the grammar used, the background, and the relation of the book or passage to the rest of the Bible. Commentaries come in single volumes covering the whole Bible or in multi-volume sets. Suggestions: The Bible Exposition Commentary by Warren Wiersbe (Vol. 1 & 2); The Believer’s Bible Commentary by William MacDonald; The Thru the Bible Commentary Series by J. Vernon McGee; The John MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series; Tree of Life Commentary Series by Jon Courson

Word Studies Most Bible students are not literate in the original languages used in the Bible, so many scholars have compiled practical reference works giving detailed definitions of biblical words. These help us get a better understanding of what a specific word used in the Bible means. Most word study dictionaries are laid out in either alphabetical order or in order of word number. Some will even give you the definition based on the context of the passage you are studying. Suggestion: Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words Other Helpful Resources Nave’s Topical Bible- allows you to follow any topic in the Bible through the entire Bible. The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge- takes each verse in the Bible and allows you to cross-reference each word in that verse with other words throughout the Bible. Nelson’s Complete Book of Bible Maps and Charts- contains book introductions, maps, charts, timelines, diagrams, historical articles and more. Wiersbe’s Expository Outlines on the Old and New Testaments (2 Volumes)- leads you book by book through the entire Bible to help you see the “big picture” of God’s revelation. Includes: Outlines for each book, introductory notes, studies on key topics throughout the Old and New Testaments, expositions, etc.

CALVARY CHAPEL DISCIPLESHIP SERIES BOOK THREE LIVING WITH POWER Chapter Three SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

30

SPIRITUAL WARFARE “Satan trembles when he sees, the weakest saint upon his knees.” William Cowper “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the demons. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors.” C.S. Lewis At the moment of our conversion, the Bible says that God “has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love…” Colossians 1:13. In layman’s terms, that means we have “switched teams”. The implications of that transition are far greater than simply being on God’s side. It means that in the real world—the invisible, spiritual realm—we are in the middle of a war! When the apostle Paul wrote the Corinthians, he made certain they were aware of the invisible war that raged around them. “We are human, but we don’t wage war with human plans and methods. We use God’s mighty weapons, not mere worldly weapons, to knock down the Devil’s strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 That is why the Word of God refers to us as “soldiers of Jesus Christ”. 2 Timothy 2:3 Everyday of our lives, as believers in Christ, we are locked in an invisible battle with the forces of wickedness in the spirit realm.

31

The most comprehensive passage in the New Testament concerning spiritual warfare is found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. He begins by explaining the believer’s spiritual heritage in Christ, continues with practical information on how this “new life” will show itself in good actions, and then concludes his letter with specific information on how every believer must be equipped in order to fight victoriously against the enemy. In order to understand and be victorious in this war we need to know who our enemy is, what this battle is all about, and what are the weapons God has provided us with. THE ENEMY “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 The Devil The names he is called by in Scripture give us insight into his evil character. • Satan—the word means “adversary” or “opponent” used 52 times in Scripture. • Devil—“slanderer”, used 35 times. The Belt of Truth—The basic idea is the quality of truthfulness. Satan is a liar, but the Christian’s life is to be characterized by truthfulness, honesty, and integrity. Even as our Lord Jesus Christ said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” John 14:6 The Breastplate of Righteousness—The righteousness that Paul speaks of here is “practical everyday righteousness,” holy living. The breastplate protected the soldier’s heart, even as this kind of righteousness protects our spiritual heart from defilement. “Above all else guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.” Proverbs 4:23 The Sandals of the Gospel—Sandals speak of mobility, preparedness, and steadfastness. As soldiers of Christ, we are to stand firm on the Gospel, prepared to take it wherever we go and share it with whomever we meet. “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:15) The Shield of Faith—The shield protected the soldier from arrows dipped in pitch and then set on fire (“fiery darts”). Our faith in God, the Word of God, and the promises of God protects us from all the fiery darts (temptations, oppressions, and mind games) of the Devil. “Above all take up the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one” Ephesians 6:16. The Helmet of Salvation—The helmet protected the soldier’s head from injury. The helmet of salvation is the helmet of Assurance; it protects the believer’s mind from doubt. If Satan can get us to doubt our salvation, he can defeat us. Knowing we are saved, and that we will never lose our salvation is what protects Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

44

our minds against the Devil and aids in our victory. (John 10:2729; 1 John 5:11-13) The Sword of the Spirit—The soldier’s sword was his offensive weapon. The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. If we are going to effectively use the Word, we have to know God’s Word. “For the Word of God is living and powerful. And sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 Prayer—Prayer is the neglected weapon of the Christian arsenal. Without prayer there can be no victory. “God will do nothing except in answer to prayer.” John Wesley “The weapons of our warfare are not physical but they are mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:4 A Final Thought on Spiritual Warfare comes out of 2 Timothy 2:34, “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.” This gets into the “mindset” or “attitude” of a soldier of Christ. God has given us everything we need to win this war. But we must have the “mind of Christ” and not a “carnal mind” in love with the world. Too many Christians are AWOL when it comes to spiritual warfare. They are not fighting the good fight of faith. They are double minded, trying to serve two masters, God and the world. May God give us grace to keep our mind focused on Him, and our life fully committed to Jesus, so that when we come to the end of our lives we might be able to say like the Apostle Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” 2Timothy 4:7-8 MEMORY VERSES 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Ephesians 6:10-12 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 1 John 2:16 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 2 Timothy 2:3-4 ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

CALVARY CHAPEL DISCIPLESHIP SERIES BOOK THREE LIVING WITH POWER Chapter Four PURITY AND TEMPTATION

Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

49

PURITY and TEMPTATION As Christians, God wants us to understand the importance of living lives of purity in an impure world. Every day we are bombarded by immoral messages and images that the Devil has designed to tempt us away from a life of purity into sin. And yet even though these temptations can be strong, the power of God available to us is even stronger. Strength to resist temptation and live for God is not an unrealistic dream; it’s a divine promise! And it begins with knowing what God has said in His Word concerning these things and the promises He has given us for victory. WALKING IN PURITY “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” Psalm 24:3-5 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 What does Isaiah 6:3 tell us about the character of God? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ God’s holiness is summed up in 1 John 1:5. CALVARY CHAPEL DISCIPLESHIP SERIES BOOK THREE LIVING WITH POWER Chapter Five THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE

Calvary Chapel Elk Grove-DISCIPLESHIP SERIES – BOOK THREE

62

THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 “…And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:31b The Spirit-filled life is a supernatural life lived in the power and under the control of the Holy Spirit. The more we yield to the Spirit’s control and rely on His strength in our lives, the more we will experience victory. There are several outlets of God’s power that flow from our lives but there is only one inlet of power into our life, and that is the power of the Holy Spirit. THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Jesus, in speaking of the Holy Spirit said: “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 The Holy Spirit dwells “with” unbelievers drawing them to Christ. When they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit, then comes “in” them, which speaks of their salvation. They are now born-again believers in Christ and as Jesus promised, the Spirit will never leave them. (John 14:16) Then in Acts 1:8 we read:

63

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The Holy Spirit coming “upon” a believer is referred to as the “Baptism with the Holy Spirit” in the New Testament. This is often a separate and subsequent work of the Spirit in a believer’s life apart from salvation. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is an empowering for service, where the Spirit gives you the ability to be a witness for Jesus Christ. The word “power” in Acts 1:8 is a word in the Greek that we get our English word “dynamic” from. This is the inlet of power that every believer in Christ needs to live the Spirit-Filled life. If you are lacking the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit in your life, ask your heavenly Father to give it to you. Jesus said, “…How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:13 Who does the Bible say this promise of power is for? have the power to live for God. Every day we need to ask God for a fresh filling of His Spirit. The word “filled” in Ephesians 5:18 could also be translated “controlled.” “Be continually being controlled by the Holy Spirit.” This speaks of continual surrender and obedience to the will of the Spirit of God. The best way to be constantly being filled with the Holy Spirit is to be constantly surrendering to the control of the Holy Spirit. WALKING IN THE SPIRIT “…Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16 In the book of Acts chapter two, after the disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit they began to walk in the Spirit by practicing certain things in their lives. The Breaking of Bread The early Church had what they called “Love Feasts” once a week, which was a “potluck.” The idea was to celebrate their oneness with each other, because in that culture to eat with someone meant that you were becoming one with them. Christ At The Center The Spirit-Filled life is a Christ-centered life. It’s a life of discipleship. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24 Living the life of a disciple, where Jesus is at the very center, demands certain things in our lives.
