NOMINATING COMMITTEE Every November, the CCL Nominating Committee is tasked with the responsibility to identify the best candidates to replace those Board Members whose terms are ending. It is critical that we have the best leadership team in place to ensure the future success of the Country Club of Landfall. That said, we need our Members assistance in developing the best pool of potential candidates.

The Board is responsible for CCL governance as it pertains to policy, finances, planning, strategy and the overall key functions of the Club. Serving on the Board is a commitment of one’s skills, time and leadership for a three-year term beginning May 2018. The Board meets monthly and its Members are usually assigned specific areas of responsibility. Additional meetings and time will be necessary to facilitate business and responsibilities. In accordance with the CCL By-Laws, the Nominating Committee will select one candidate for each of the four vacant positions for 2018, thus maintaining the full complement of 11 Board Members.

The 2017-2018 Nominating Committee is encouraging Members who are interested in serving on the Board of Directors to contact one of the Committee Members for a candidate application. We also welcome names of potentially strong leaders that Members would like to propose for consideration by the Committee. Our goal is to fully survey the leadership potential within all of CCL. All communications will be kept in the strictest confidence. In order to allow sufficient time for the Nominating Committee to complete the process in a timely manner, we would like to have all applications submitted on or before December 8, 2017. We appreciate your help in this important election process. Please contact the following Nominating Committee Members for an application:

Golf he fall season is upon us which to many is a favorite time of year as it brings cooler crisp mornings, the lack of high humidity, and some great golfing conditions! The month of October will be a busy one for the golf operations team. We will start the month off with the Couples Club Championship on Sunday the 1st that has a fun and exciting format of modified alternate shot. This gives the tournament the nickname of the “Divorce J A S ON C HERRY Open!” The Men’s Member-Guest will take Director of Gol f place the 12-14th as we are slated to have a great field of 66 teams competing this year. Current plans are to be able to host the event on one course per day which will open the opposite course for normal member play so stay tuned for that formal announcement. The Ladies will host their annual “Solheim Cup” on the 19-20th and we will have our Parent-Child Championship on Sunday, the 22nd. This is a great event to get out and play a fun event with the Junior golfer of the family. We will conclude the month with the

“Landfall Tradition” Women’s Collegiate event on the 26-29th that will host 18 of the country’s top golf programs. This is a great spectator event with an opportunity to see some of the best collegiate female players in the country so make plans now to attend! Hopefully by now you have received a few editions of the new “Landfall Links” golf communication email! This is a new communication piece that I plan to send out bi-weekly that will be your most up to date news on what is happening in the golf operations at CCL. It will include info on upcoming tournaments, current course happenings, facilities schedules, merchandise spotlights, tournament results and much much more. If you are not receiving the “Landfall Links” and would like to, please email me at jason.cherry@countrycluboflandfall.com so I may add you to our distribution list. I would like to continue to remind all to please enter and exit the fairways at 90 degrees, sand your divots, repair ball marks, and please keep all four cart tires on the path when parking at the tees and greens. Also, with the busy and shorter daylight days, please remember to be respectful to your fellow members by canceling in advance any tee times that you will not be able to use.

THE 2017 PARENT CHILD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Sunday, October 22 at the Nicklaus Course This will be a 12:00pm Shotgun Start.

TIP OF THE MONTH RELEASING THE CLUB FACE A very important move in the golf swing that is often overlooked is how the forearms and hands release the club face. As you enter the hitting area, the forearms and hands should be rotating the club face over. (See photo 1) this motion will make the toe of the club pass the heel of the club promoting a released club face. (See photo 2) Releasing the club face in the way described will give you some added power and allow you to turn the ball over. Good luck and have fun! Greg

This event is open to all full golf members. Registration is now available online. There is no fee for this event.

THE 16TH ANNUAL COLLEGIATE GOLF TOURNAMENT

THE LANDFALL TRADITION OCTOBER 27-29

The field of 18 top women’s teams, hosted by the UNCW Seahawks, will include four of the nation’s top ten ranked teams and seven of the top twenty. Alabama, Florida, Duke, and Furman ranked 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th, respectively, lead the field which also includes 2016 Landfall Tradition defending champion South Carolina. No tournament of this size and quality can be successful without a strong volunteer base. We hope to welcome back volunteers from previous years but would like to extend the opportunity to anyone who may have an interest. Areas of need are diverse and schedules are flexible!

Greens Corner e are glad to hear that the new Champion greens on Dye continue to receive favorable reviews from the CCL membership. Shorter daylight lengths and cooler night time temperatures have caused the growth of the Champion, just as any warm season turf type at this time of year, to slow dramatically. This decrease in JEFF MACK Director of Golf & growth forces us to alter our weekly Grounds Maintenance management practices. First, the need for weekly grooming, verticutiing, and topdressing of the turf to keep it playing well is no longer needed until vigorous growth resumes next spring. Not to worry, the greens will continue to roll smooth with a quick pace in the absence of these practices. It is wise to have a thick, healthy turf canopy as we approach the dormancy period. If you put the turf to bed happy in the fall, it will wake up happy in the spring. Mowing heights will be slightly elevated as well. Having more leaf present will assist the plant in carbohydrate storage.

No Rye on the par 3 tees will enable us to thoroughly rid these particular holes of Poa Annua. It has gained a strong foothold following successive years of overseeding which severely limited our chemical control options.

A diverse collection of specialized equipment, vehicles, and tools is paramount to providing desired golf course playing conditions at CCL. A significant portion of our existing equipment fleet is approaching 7 years old. While it may make perfect business sense to purchase/own certain pieces, other components in the inventory are ready for retirement after approximately 4 to 5 years of daily utilization; especially considering the demands and expectations of them in the field. So that we may plan, budget, and produce accordingly, we have kept busy identifying and justifying which particular equipment pieces need to be rotated out on an every 4 to 5 We hope that the Membership is enjoying the Tifgrand Bermuda year basis, and those who have a longer life expectancy and recently added to the CCL courses and practice areas. L9GA

Hello to our L9GA players! Here is our schedule for October’s Thursday golf days. Our starting time has reverted to 9am. On the 12th and 26th there will be no scheduled golf but tee times are available on the 26th for anyone interested in playing. October 26th is the College/Am day for the Landfall Tradition tournament held with 18 top women’s golf teams from universities around the U.S. and hosted by UNCW’s Seahawk’s golf team. The tournament is played throughout the weekend and it’s a wonderful chance to see some especially high level golf on the fairways and greens we play all of the time!

September started like a lion, with the first MGA event canceled due to saturated conditions, and a hurricane and tropical storm lined up in the Atlantic potentially threatening our coast. Let’s hope October is far less threatening, because we have a full slate of MGA events planned, with 2 flighted and 2 ABCD events, including the popular Red/White/ Blue game.

October 5

The MGA board is also starting preparations for the Closing Day event and dinner. Be sure to mark your calendar for these two activities on November 8th. We will have a great meal and lots of prize drawings.

Stay out of Trouble

Our yearly golf round with the LGA in mid-August , we can report, was a special day. The pink and green decorations, the handmade key chains for the LGA members, and the nice pairings made it a very special event. The reports from the visit to Porter’s Neck on August 24 were also very positive - with mentions of the good organization and the fine course. Thank you to all who made both of these events possible: President Dana Silver, our Tournament Coordinator Kiplyn Duffy, our Events Chair Beverly Johnston and our Photographer Diane Roberts.

And let’s keep our focus on pace of play so that everyone can enjoy the round. 11

Leslie and Peter Langer met in Germany as college exchange students while playing club basketball. Fast forward and the couple has now been married for 32 years. They have been members of CCL since 1989 before the gym was built. Once the gym was in place, the two quickly became regulars on the cardio and strength machines in the early morning hours prior to heading off to work. As fitness classes were added, Peter and Leslie attended several classes at the sports center. Kick boxing was a favorite along with a “guys only” class for Peter and boot camp training for Leslie. Through the years they have continued to participate in a variety of fitness classes; more recently spin.

Clearly, Leslie and Peter have made staying fit a priority in their lives. As Peter commented, “Fitness is a lifestyle decision.” A decision that has obviously paid off!

For the past 23 years, the Icy Hot Southern Junior Cup has brought the best juniors from across the Southern section to compete in a tournament for the “best state.” Each team is made up of the top 3 player’s boy and girls in their respective age divisions. Each state selects two coaches to instruct and lead the team to a first place victory. Our very own coach from the Country Club of Landfall has been selected for the 4th straight year. Alan and Team North Carolina will be competing in Chattanooga, TN September 22-24 trying to bring home the Gold Medal for the first time in over 22 years which has been dominated by Georgia. Good Luck to Team North Carolina and Alan!

Michael will walk you step-by-step through simple ways TC2000 scans for stocks that are consolidating, breaking out or experiencing major indicator divergences. See how to use EasyScan to find stocks that meet your investing style & risk tolerance. Screen with technical indicators, Morningstar fundamental criteria using hundreds of built-in watchlists. Plus, you’ll get workflow tips that help you organize your chart research from stock selection to making the trade.
