General Manager’s Letter

JESSI REUTTER As Summer comes to an end, I encourage you to flip through the pages of this Breeze and reflect upon all the fun we had at CCL. From camps to clinics, socials and summer parites - this was certainly a season full of wonderful memories. I am pleased to announce that we are extending our pool privileges with Porters Neck Country Club. While we know this is a busy time of year, hopefully you can take advantage of this offering. We will adhere to their September schedule which states that Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3 are considered a holiday weekend with reduced capacity and September 4, Labor Day, will be closed to CCL Members. The remainder of the month their hours are:

as possible. In addition to dealing with inclement weather and delays, we want to make sure that the project is complete to meet the needs and expectations of the membership, including the approved additional days for design and enhancements recommended by the Design Committee. Thank you for your patience during this last stage. I know that the membership had a lot of great experiences around the Eclipse last month. Look for the photo on page 5 of Russ Noll, Founding Full Member and his fantastic telescope. We thank you for sharing your hobby for so many to enjoy the moment. We have several upcoming community and golf tournaments coming up this fall. For a full list which includes things like the Fall Festival, Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational and the Landfall Foundation Tournament, visit the community page, page 19. Looking ahead to one of the long standing Landfall events, the Landfall Tradition will take place in October. In order to accommodate the players and all activities, we will honor limited Dye Sports Center hours of operation between Thursday, October 26 and Sunday, October 29. A detailed scheduled will be posted in advance.

Friday, September 1 – 11am – 7pm Saturdays, September 9, 16, 23 – 10am – 7pm Sundays, September 10, 17, 24 – 10am – 7pm Speaking of pools, last month our very own CCL pool was poured and the deck will be poured next. As we complete the last 30% of construction things are shaping up and getting very exciting. I encourage you to arrange a hard hat tour with Charlie Zimmer, Assistant General Manager, if you have not already done so. Thomas Construction is on track to obtain their occupancy certificate and begin punch lists and inspections around Thanksgiving which will put the membership back in the facility near Christmas. I understand the excitement and that everyone would like to get in as soon

I would also like to remind you all when retrieving golf balls from open lots or yards, please do so quickly and request permission when a homeowner is present. Yards with gates should not be entered unless permission is granted by the homeowner.

JESSI REUTTER

A Friend ly Reminder Just in case you didn’t know, we are featuring a few of the Club’s Rules and Regulations which help to keep the Country Club of Landfall a safe, enjoyable and fair place for families and friends to come together and foster relationships and personal well-being. 4.2 SUSPENSION OF PLAY With the assistance of a lightning prediction system, the Pro Staff monitors weather conditions that could pose a threat to golfers’ safety. When the system’s danger signal sounds or the staff determines that golfers are in danger while on the golf courses, the courses will be declared closed. Golfers MUST vacate the golf courses and practice facilities immediately, and move to the Clubhouses or the closest shelter, or risk possible disciplinary action. Play will not be allowed to resume until the lightning system sounds all clear or the Pro Staff determines the danger has passed. Anyone violating this rule does so at their own risk.

While the lightning protection system is a significant aid in lightning prediction, it is no substitute for one’s own judgment for one’s safety. You should always be aware of weather conditions and the dangers from lightning and seek safety when lightning is a threat. 4.13 MISCELLANEOUS RULES • Use of the cart paths or golf courses for jogging, bike riding, walking, or skating is not permitted on any course open for play after 7:30am and continuing during operational hours. At no time shall the use of the courses for these purposes interfere with golfers using the course or the maintenance staff working on the course. When golfers are present on the course, non-golfers shall immediately leave

the course. The golf courses are only available for use by members and their guests. The Club accepts no responsibility for any injury that might occur. 2.15 ANIMALS (PETS) Pets, other than dogs assisting handicapped, are not permitted on Club grounds or in Club facilities. Pets are allowed to be walked only on golf cart paths during non-operational hours and must be on a leash or similar restraining device. Under no circumstances will they be allowed on the golf course fairways, greens, sand bunkers, practice facilities, Clubhouse or Sports Center areas. Members are responsible for removing anything their pets may drop.

Golf he month of September is great in many ways as it is the start of the Fall season bringing some cooler and less-humid days, it is the beginning of football season, and is the kick-off month for the remainder of our member tournaments. It also had extra meaning this year as it signified us back to having all 45-holes open for play with the Dye reopening the later part of August with NEW Champion Bermuda greens and Tif-grand J A S ON C HERRY Bermuda collars. With this transition over to these new Bermuda grasses, it will Director of Gol f ensure more year round premium course conditions for us all to enjoy for many years to come. I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding during the Dye closure as we were limited to just the Nicklaus course for 10 weeks. Overall, the transition time went really well so we thank you for your cooperation! This month will be extremely busy with events as we will host the Men’s Net and Senior Club Championship, the Junior Club Championship, the LGA’s Member-Member, the always exciting CCL Ryder Cup, and conclude the month with the Ladies Club Championship. You all have had the Summer to sharpen your games so we plan on seeing you out and competing in these great tournaments! Please note that the annual Employee Appreciation Day will be held on Monday, September 11th so all golf facilities will be closed for use on this day. The entire staff is extremely excited and thankful for this great opportunity. In closing, I would like to remind you of a few things we need your help with. For the “group play” leaders, reminder to have all of your players names submitted 72-hours in advance of your tee times. This will ensure we do not have to cancel your tee times and will help us be able to release any unused tee times back to the rest of the membership. Also, we would like to get you all back into the habit of checking-in into the golf shop prior to your round. For numerous reasons, Club policy requests each member to check in prior to play so we would love to see your smiling faces prior to play so we may update you with any pertinent course news or show you some of the latest and greatest items in the golf shop! Lastly, please continue to enter and exit the fairways at 90 degrees, sand your divots, and repair ball marks!

MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS It was a very active month for great golf achievements out on the Nicklaus course. Congratulations to all the members for their golfing accomplishments! On July 14th, Robert Vaughn used his 7-iron on the 2nd hole of the Marsh from 122 yards to record his perfect shot! Congratulations go out to Tim Holsather for his long range shot! On July 16th, while playing the Ocean course, he used his 4-iron from 188 yards on hole #6 to make his hole-in-one! Great Shot Tim! One for the ages. . . as Ken Anderson shot his age of 83 on July 26th. The day before on July 25th, Tom Naylon did one better and shot 1 stroke under his age. Great playing Gentlemen! Kudos go out to Janice Maloof as she carded a hole-inone on July 22nd. She used her 5-wood from 111 yards on Ocean #6. Way to go Janice! On August 3rd, Lynne Holloway while playing hole #4 on the Ocean used her Gap Wedge from 77 yards to claim her hole-in-one! What a great back drop to have while watching your ball go in the hole for an Ace! Brad Whitmore made a rare hole out from the fairway as he carded and eagle on Marsh #3 while playing on August 6th! Steve Euler got in on the hole-in-one action as well when he was playing the Ocean course on August 5th. He used his pitching wedge on the 4th hole from 120 yards to record his perfect shot! Not to be out done, on August 10th Ron Minson made a hole-in-one while playing the Pines hole #6. He used his 6-iron from 158 yards to achieve his ace! Great Shot! Hole-in-one for Lynne Holloway using a Gap Wedge on Ocean #4 from 77 yards. Hal Price got a hole-in-one on Ocean 4, 134 yards, with his 7 iron. The ball was hit above the hole and rolled back in!

Eight of CCL’s junior players advanced to the Drive Chip & Putt Sub Regional Qualifier at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC on July 29. While none of them advanced, we were there to support and cheer them on! Congratulations, we are very proud of you all! Greens Corner e hope that all CCL Members are enjoying playing on the new Champion greens on the Dye. All current indications are that the new greens are withstanding the foot traffic and other stresses typically associated with golf play just fine. Keep in mind that the turf on these surfaces is approximately 3 months old, meaning they will continue to become more durable, established, and mature as time marches on. To ensure that JEFF MACK the greens continue to roll smooth and Director of Golf & true, we will continue with our weekly light Grounds Maintenance topdressings and grooming practices until growth begins to slow due to the arrival of cooler weather, and shorter day-light lengths. # 7 Dye green is quickly catching-up with the rest of the fleet, and will reopen for play at some point during the 3rd week of this month. There are only (2) places in the US that Champion sod is for sale; Champion Turf Farms in Texas and Sandhills Turf in Candor, NC. Of the (2), Sandhills Turf is the only one that harvests it in big rolls. We were very fortunate to secure this “in very high demand product from them. Quality of the turf was excellent and utilizing big roll sod equated to significantly fewer seams. High quality and less seams combined equals reopening #7 Dye green in tip-top shape for the Membership in the shortest window of time possible. Upon reopening of the Dye, its greens were certainly the new baby in the house that everyone wanted to see and hold. In addition, we hope that all have noted and are enjoying the other enhancements that were made to the course during the 10 week closure. These include, but are not limited to: refurbishment of the bridge between #2 and #3, placement of Tifgrand Bermuda on the collars and the practice chipping area approach, yardage prisms on the cart paths, and bronze 150 yard plaques containing the CCL logo on the par 4 and par 5 fairways. We would like to thank the membership again not only for their patience and understanding during the 10 week Dye greens conversion, but also during the brief closure of the Nicklaus at the end of August. This 1-week closure afforded us the time to aerify the short-cut areas, aggressively verticut the greens, and give the course a much deserved rest. As we

An enormous amount of leaf material was removed from the Nicklaus greens via aggressive verticutting in multiple directions.

We hope the Membership enjoys the new and much improved chipping area at the north end of the Nicklaus practice green.

re-enter our business as usual program at CCL with both courses being open, we hope that all of you thoroughly enjoy the late summer/fall golfing season. Mowing heights of the Bermuda fairways on the CCL courses will soon be elevated to allow the turf an increased opportunity to store carbohydrates in preparation for dormancy. This is standard operating procedure. Another bump-up in height will occur later this fall to ensure there is plenty of leaf tissue present to support the golf ball once the fairways cease growing. By the end of 2017, approximately 120 trees will be introduced to the CCL courses and grounds to mitigate the removal of select trees around shaded green sites earlier in the year. A variety of different tree species will be utilized during this endeavor. Potential locations of the new trees are being thoroughly discussed and reviewed at the Green Committee level. Renovation work to the small chipping area on the north end of the Nicklaus practice green has been completed. Newly installed drainage will keep it firmer underfoot during the winter months, and the superb density of the Tifgrand Bermuda will support a golf ball nicely year-round. It is already that time to begin thinking about preventing winter weeds, such as Poa Annua, from emerging. Early September is an ideal time in our area to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to reduce populations of winter weed species present this coming fall/winter. A pre-emergent herbicide and a fertilizer source high in Potassium (K+) are scheduled to be applied to the CCL courses early this month; weather permitting. Potassium has been proven to make turf plants more winter hardy. Small amounts of Iron and Nitrogen in the fertilizer will help the courses retain a deeper, green color as they enter the fall. Any weeds that dodge the pre-emergent chemical barrier will be dealt with on a selective-post-emergent-herbicide basis later this year. The CCL drone has just received another responsibility in addition to taking marvelous overhead photos. It is the newest gadget within our goose harassment playbook. In today’s day and age, drones are being used for an array of activities ranging from surveillance to delivering packages. Early indications are that they are also remarkably effective in keeping our feathered friends out of unwanted areas; especially when the person(s) flying them are comfortable at the navigational controls. As always, if you should have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course, make an appointment to see me in my office, or talk to a Green Committee member.

Dear L9GA golfers! As our year turns to September with shorter days, and the feeling that summer is turning away and autumn arriving (at least as far as decorations go), we come to two of the most special events of our golf year. Those highlights are the L9GA cocktail party, hosted this year by Debra Blundell on Wednesday, September 27 at 6 pm, and the Optional Guest Day on September 28 - a chance to invite your friend, your sister, your daughter, or a fellow L9GA member to be your partner. Dress up in the same colors, if you like, or add a bow or a special flourish to your golf cart. Then enjoy a lunch together afterwards- a fun day. SEPTEMBER PLAY DAYS: Thursday, September 7 - Criers at the Nick Thursday, September 14 - 2 Best Balls of 4 at the Nick Thursday, September 21 - Three Blind Mice at the Dye (new greens!) Wednesday, September 27 - L9GA Cocktail Party, at Debra Blundell’s home Thursday, September 28 - Captain’s Choice, Member/Member or Guest, Nick

Well, hopefully the dog days of summer are receding in our review mirror, and we’ll soon be welcoming a nice, cool, extended autumn of great golf weather. By now the Dye, with it’s beautiful new Champion Bermuda greens should be reopened, the Nick should be aerated and rested, and all the courses back to full usage. Also, with the Dye back in play and the weather cooling, we switch back to 9am shotgun starts in September, and LGA returns to their regular Thursday play. A quick reminder following aeration at the Nick: if your ball comes to rest in an aeration hole, you may lift without penalty, clean, and drop on the fairway no closer to the hole, place on the green no closer to the hole. And since we’re still in storm season, remember that one long blast on the ThorGuard system means all players MUST vacate the course and practice areas immediately. Play will resume following three short blasts. August was a great month for MGA competitions, and September should be even better. We have four competitions of foursomes planned, three of them flighted, and one ABCD. We also bring the Tour Series back to the Dye. And remember, we play into November, so if you’ve been on the sidelines, it’s time to suit up! See you on Wednesday.

BOGEY PROOF NUTRITION PART 4 ON COURSE NUTRITION: While this technically doesn’t fall into the category of “workout nutrition,” being that this is an article for golfers, I think its important to address. What you are fueling yourself with on the course. You can make all the changes in the gym and at home, but if you’re not ready and fueled when you step on the tee box, you’re body won’t be able to perform to it’s potential. Along the same lines, especially if you are playing consecutive days or multiple rounds in a day, we need to take a look at what you're eating before and after. PRE-ROUND NUTRITION: #1. Lean Meats - Protein reduces hunger and boosts brain function #2. Vegetables/Low Glycemic Fruits - Promote steadier blood sugar and sustained energy #3. Good Fats - Antiviral, Antibacterial and Anti fungal, boosts immune system. IN-ROUND NUTRITION: #1. Electrolytes #2. Essential Amino Acids (EAA)/ Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) #3. Nuts #4. Jerky POST-ROUND NUTRITION: #1. Beer…..Just Kidding - Whey Protein Shake!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR KID ACTIVE AND HEALTHY Today we are faced with a nationwide child obesity epidemic. 75% of our youth do not meet physical activity recommendations. Daily physical activities have been replaced with a sedentary lifestyle in front of the screen. In addition, unhealthy food has become much more prominent and accessible.

The idea of healthy bones and disease prevention probably isn’t the first thing that will motivate kids, so focus on benefits such as individual successes and making it fun. Fun is the top motivator in almost every aspect of a child’s outlook. HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS STARTED

THE INVESTORS ROUNDTABLE OF WILMINGTON (IRT)

12pm at the Country Club of Landfall The September meeting will feature Frank Amoroso presenting “Dread the Fed: Exposing the Perfect Crime”. Frank Amoroso is an attorney who was born in New York City. Before embarking on a writing career, Mr. Amoroso practiced law for many years and was a senior partner in a large northeast law firm. “Law is a wonderful training ground for writing,” says Amoroso. “It’s all about communication and persuasion, with the added requirement of precision.” From clerking for a Judge on New York’s highest court, to working as chief of staff for a NYS Senator, to working as a prosecutor and developing and teaching a course in White Collar Crime, his career revolved around words, written and spoken. He has used his training to write several historical novels. IRT is an educational forum for the presentation and exchange of financial, economic and business information to assist private investors in the management of their individual financial assets. IRT is not an “investment club” and speakers are not making sales presentations. Monthly meetings (9 per year) are held at the Country Club of Landfall. Lunch is served at noon, followed by the featured speaker and a question-andanswer period ending by 1:30pm. Our presenters, recognized leaders in their respective fields, speak on subjects relevant to the current investment and economic environment. New members and guests are welcome and encouraged at all meetings. If you would like to attend, please contact Cliff Brock at cliffbrock@ec.rr.com or 910-622-0019 before September 1.
