Catharine Clark Gallery announces its return to UNSEEN Amsterdam, the acclaimed European photography fair specializing in emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery's presentation at Stand #32 features work by three women artists Stephanie Syjuco, Lenka Clayton, and Jana Sophia Nolle - who repurpose everyday and found materials (detritus, letters, flowers and house plants) into sculptural works that are subsequently depicted as photographs. The resulting images document these sculptural and performative interventions, while becoming fully realized artworks in and of themselves. She produces photography, sculpture, and installations, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital processes and socially-engaged projects. In the series "Hard Light," Syjuco spray paints white Oriental lilies and white tulips, species of plants indigenous to countries throughout Asia that were subsequently cultivated through colonial trade, with Krylon aerosol paint. While vibrant and formally arresting, Syjuco's images also invite a more trenchant investigation of how we codify otherness, and how color bears a literal and proverbial weight upon our collective consciousness. LENKA CLAYTON Lenka Clayton (b. 1977) is an interdisciplinary artist from the U.K. living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, whose work engages with everyday situations, extending the familiar into the realms of the poetic and absurd. The series "Letters from Sculptors," photographed in museum archives, depict letters written and sent to museums by famous sculptors, upending concepts of the ephemeral and the canonical. JANA SOPHIA NOLLE Jana Sophia Nolle (b. 1986) lives and works in Berlin and San Francisco, California. Her practice, which consists of photographs and found footage, is self-described as operating at the intersections of research, observation and documentation. The series "Living Room" documents temporary homeless shelters recreated from materials found in the street and erected in various living rooms of the affluent in San Francisco.
