A local B5 biodiesel standard starts to be executed in Hainan Province. China tries to accelerate cellulosic ethanol industrialization by a national keystone basic research project of lignocellulosic biorefining. Algae biodiesel industry needs to increase competitiveness by further reducing cost. Henan Coal Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., LanzaTech New Zealand Ltd. and Chinese Academy of Sciences will jointly make fuel ethanol from coal-based syngas. China, with the most carbon trading resources, has an immature carbon trading market however. Hunan Kangyida Camellia Oleifera Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is making efforts to seize more domestic Camellia oleifera seed oil market through a novel aqueous enzymatic technology.

Global economic recovery becomes weaker and more unstable. In order to prevent local economy from falling into recession again, countries in the world are actively taking new measures to stimulate economic growth. As a global important and large exporting country, China is facing more international and domestic pressure such as international disputes at RMB exchange rates and large trade surplus, domestic increasing prices and more serious asset bubble and so on. In order to thoroughly eliminate these pressures, China is making efforts to adjust economic structure to reduce dependence on exports and increase domestic demands. Current energy-saving and emission reduction will play an important role in China’s economic restruction process. China is taking stricter measures to close small-sized steel, cement, coal steam-electric and coal companies. Meanwhile, China is encouraging domestic companies to develop and introduce leading clean technologies, which provides a bright market for international companies with leading technologies such as coal syngas-based ethanol production technology. In order to accelerate development of domestic biodiesel industry, China has been speeding up the promotion of national B5 biodiesel standard. And in order to accelerate development of domestic carbon market, China is improving carbon trading mechanism.

Editor's Recommendation on Issue 1010 Bio-based PVA to launch in early 2011

Shandong Polymer Bio-Chemicals Co., Ltd. successfully listed at Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Sept. 15th, 2010.

China’s first bio-based PVA producer namely GuangXi GuangWei Chemical Co., Ltd. (Guangxi Guangwei) is estimated to formally launch a 50,000t/a bio-based PVA production line in January or February 2011, and the bio-based PVA sample will be provided to clients this November. Bio-based PVA will see strong competition from traditional PVA in the market by then.

L- phenylalanine demand is increasing currently, driven by increasing exports for its downstream products namely aspartame in the market.

In China, traditional PVA means to adopt non-renewable resources such as oilbased ethylene, natural gas or calcium carbide as raw material produces PVA. Bio-based PVA indicates to adopt renewable resources such as cassava or bagasse as raw material to produce PVA.

Changshu Changjiang Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd., Mudanjiang BIOSEEN Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and East China University of Science and Technology will jointly build a new PLA production base in Mudanjiang City. Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. got a national patent of bio-succinic acid. Whether it is legal to use disposable foam tableware in China causes intense dispute by various society organizations recently. Bio-based PVA is to be launched by GuangXi GuangWei Chemical Co., Ltd. in China for the first time in early 2011, which will meet strong competition from traditional PVA in the market. In this 50,000t/a bio-based PVA project, Guangxi Guangwei will mainly use cassava or bagasse as raw material to produce bio-based PVA. When cassava price is at high level, Guangxi Guangwei will mainly adopt low-price bagasse as raw material, disclosed by Mr. Sun, technical supporter from Guangxi Guangwei. Moreover, bagasse is ample in Guangxi, which is China’s largest sugarcane planting area with total planting areas of 1 million hectares in 2009, disclosed by Statistics Bureau of Guangxi. After the launch, Guangxi Guangwei will mainly launch its bio-based PVA in Beibu-Bay circling economic zone, Pearl River Delta and ASEAN Free Trade Area. Currently, traditional PVA has been sold commonly in these three areas. It is obvious that bio-based PVA will meet great challenge from traditional PVA. According to Mr. Sun, the quality of bio-based PVA is the same with traditional PVA, but whether the production cost of bio-based PVA will be lower than that of traditional PVA is still uncertain, Guangxi Guangwei can not exactly quote biobased before the launch of bio-based PVA production line. ……
