CCM Data & Primary Intelligence Description: Approval for stevia sweetener consumption has began to expand mainly from Asia countries to some western developed countries such as the US and France since 2007. Additionally, owing to advantages like completely natural and low-calorie, it is very likely that more and more countries would continue to open up the market for stevia sweetener in the future. China, the largest stevia sweetener production base and supplier in the world, has witnessed significant development within the industry in the past three years, reflected by the increasing output to 3,096 tonnes in 2009 from 2,073 tonnes in 2007 and 80% of the total exported. Attracted by promising future prospect, many producers, including some large foreign investors like GLG and PureCircle are endeavoring to enlarge capacity and accelerate technology innovation, aiming to grasp future commercial opportunity and obtained more profit. It is estimated that China’s stevia sweetener capacity has been expanding to 11,789t/a in 2009 from around 5,000t/a in 2007. As for consumption, though not the most important, China is an emerging consumption country for stevia sweetener, with total consumption volume of around 620 tonnes in 2009. Stevia sweetener can be used in all the fields needing sucrose, such as food, beverage, medicine, agriculture, animal feedstuff, as well as personal care and skin care products. Besides the aspects mentioned above, what other changes can be seen from 2007 to 2009? Which segments within the industry may hide the most profit business? Where will Chinese stevia sweetener industry go to and what are the challenges? Basing on such questions, CCM has updated the stevia and sweetener report compiled in 2007. In the 2009 edition, aspects as follows can be expected: - With detail description and smart analysis on China’s stevia sweetener industry, future investment opportunities may be found in the report or enlightened after reading the report; - With introduction on capacity expansion, that of foreign investors in particular, a clear picture of competitive landscape within the industry is available; - As for the sales, how much has it been changed from 2007 to 2009? What about the market value? - With relaxing market environment globally, how is Chinese stevia sweetener market being driven? - Future forecast on China’s stevia sweetener industry, by different scenario; - Future commercial opportunity for new investors in China’s stevia sweetener industry; Website: http://www.cnchemicals.com Tel: +86-20-3761 6606

Executive summary: It is a milestone for stevia sweetener industry that Joint FAO / WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) confirmed the safety of stevia sweetener containing 95% steviol glycosides and allocated permanent (Acceptable Daily Intake) ADI of XX-XX mg/kg body weight in Jun. 2008. It is the first international certification for the safety of stevia sweetener. Driven by the new markets opened up for stevia sweetener, global stevia sweetener market would be more prosperous in the near future. China has become the largest stevia sweetener supplier in the world, with total stevia sweetener market value of USDXX million in 2009. With increasing overseas demand, China’s stevia sweetener output has jumped from XX tonnes in 2006 to XX tonnes in 2009, with CAGR of XX% in 2006-2009. Stevia sweetener produced in China mainly has three varieties now: Stevioside: 80%; 85%; 90%; 95%; 97% RA: 40%; 50%; 60%; 70%; 80%; 90%; 95%; 97%; 98% Non-bitter stevioside

CCM Data & Primary Intelligence Boosted by higher customer requirement and technology innovation, quality of China’s stevia sweetener has improved in the past few years. More and more stevia sweetener producers pay much attention to high purity stevia sweetener such as RA 80%, RA 90% and RA 95% to obtain higher profit. Price of stevia sweetener is determined by steviol glycoside content and RA purity. The price has kept stable in 2007-2009 thanks to stable raw material price and increased global demand. Most of stevia sweetener producers in China adopt resins absorption and separation method to produce stevia sweetener. As global sweetener environment develops and consumers gradually shift to healthy products, natural and calorie-free sweeteners including stevia sweetener have become more and more popular. China is an emerging but not the most important market for stevia sweetener consumption, with total consumption volume of around XX tonnes in 2009. Similar with other key consumption countries, beverage and food industry are the most important downstream industries of stevia sweetener in China. China is also the largest stevia production country in the world, with stevia planting area of XX hectares in 2009, achieving XX tonnes output, XX% of the world’s total. At present, there are mainly three stevia species in China, including common species, high RA species (Shoutian series and Xinguang series) and crossbreed species. In 2009, the most popular species grown in China are Shoutian No.2 and Shoutian No.3, with total planting area of XX hectares, accounting for XX% of China’s total stevia planting areas. In China, stevia leaf is mainly supplied from three sides, namely local peasants, stevia sweetener producers’ planting bases and middleman. Character of CCM' Report: The aim of this report is to provide powerful assistance to the strategy group and the management team in making correct decision as how to penetrate the ever-increasing China market and how to catch the maximum commercial opportunities. The report is formulated independently by CCM’s professional market researchers, based on the first-hand and primary data which are analyzed by scientific methodology, confirmed with both manufacturers/end users/traders and legal authorities, and presented in a logic way. ……………… I-2 Distribution and Output of stevia in China 2009 I-2.1 Stevia planting in China Nowadays, China is the biggest stevia planting country in the world. Stevia planting developed very fast in the past five years, with total planting area increasing from XX hectares in 2005 to XX hectares in 2009.China has four major stevia planting provinces in 2009, including XX, XX, XX and XX. These four provinces have totally XX hectares stevia planting areas, accounting for XX % of China’s total. ……………… II-2 Stevia sweetener production II-2.1 History of stevia sweetener industry …………….. -
Expansion stage (2008- 2009)
Some foreign investors entered China’s stevia sweetener industry and paid much attention to high quality RA products and future commercial opportunity, mainly due to the following affairs: ¾
¾ ¾
Jun. 2008: Joint FAO / WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) confirmed that stevia sweetener containing XX % steviol glycosides is safe and allocated permanent Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0.00-4.00 mg/kg body weight. 17 Dec. 2008: the US government opened for use of high purity stevia sweetener (≥RA 95%) as an ingredient in food and beverage. Approvals subsequently granted in Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and France.
II-2.2 Production development China, with total stevia sweetener market value of USDXX million in 2009, has become the largest stevia sweetener production base in the world. With increasing overseas demand, China’s stevia sweetener output has jumped from XX tonnes in 2006 to XX tonnes in 2009, with CAGR of XX %. Boosted by higher customer requirement and technology innovation, quality of China’s stevia sweetener has improved in the past few years. More and more stevia sweetener producers pay much attention to high purity stevia sweetener such as RA 80%, RA 90% and RA 95% to obtain higher profit.
………………… Only XX stevia sweetener producers in China engage in non-bitter stevioside business, including XX, XX and XX. Owing to low steviol glycoside content and low RA purity, non-bitter stevioside is sold at lower price compared with stevioside with steviol glycoside content higher than 90%.
